Title: Citizenship Applications Thread
Post by: Jubal on April 30, 2013, 10:31:31 PM
Citizenship Applications

So, you want to become a citizen? Now instead of waiting for someone to notice you, you are allowed to apply for citizenship here!

HOW TO APPLY

To apply, you need to post in this thread stating the following:

1 - Why you wish to become a citizen. Talk about what you like about Exilian and why you feel you're a full member of this community.

2 - Any things you feel should be taken into consideration (which projects you've worked on/brought to the site, any other contributions you've made, etc)

3 - Whether you want to make a PATRONAGE application or a DIRECT VOTE application. This is a choice you have to make. If you make a patronage application, your application will wait until a current citizen (who may be any member of the citizen body) decides to become your patron and move the application to vote. The advantage of having a patron is that via your patron you become part of one of Exilian's "families" of citizens, who can help you out in the murky world of citizenship and provide an extra group of friends and support on the site. They are also allowed to make any positive comments they might have about you when posting your application (although this doesn't confer any real advantage; all citizens are allowed to discuss the applications anyway). Alternatively, you might rather go it alone and not have someone standing over you; if that's the case, go for a direct vote application. A member of staff will move your application to vote without any further ado, and the citizens will vote on it as normal. Neither method will make much difference to your overall chance of being accepted for citizenship, and neither will it affect what you can do afterwards (if you have a patron-family, for example, they're not allowed to attempt to affect how you vote in elections and so on). It's really a case of whether you feel being part of one of the large, traditional patron families would be better for you or whether you're more independent minded and prefer to stand on your own.

Please ask questions about the process by making a new thread in the Questions and Suggestions forum. This thread should be for applications only, and queries will be moved to a new thread or deleted.

Citizenship FAQ

What's the point of being a citizen?
It essentially confirms you as a full member of Exilian with an active say in the running of the site. You get voting rights in elections and on legislation, the ability to stand for staff office, and a special citizens-only discussion area among other benefits.

What are the requirements?
There are no requirements by statute, but in general anyone with over fifty posts should be thinking about citizenship. It's really a question of whether you're a participatory member of the community - remember, citizenship doesn't give you any extra responsibilities (though ideally you should vote in elections once a year), it's more a case of claiming and confirming your rights as a participating member of this site.

If I don't apply, can I be patronised anyway?
A patron can ask to patronise you directly by PMing you; if they do this, you just need to fill out the application as described and pass it on to them directly so they can post it in the citizens' area. Similarly, you can ask a current citizen to be your patron if you have a specific person in mind, but don't bug people about it! You cannot make direct vote applications any way other than by posting in this thread.

If I get a patron I don't like, can I leave their family?
Yes, just ask a member of staff and we'll sort that out. If you don't currently have a family you can also get a new patron (but you can't just switch patrons directly). Generally it's not worth the bother; your "family" has as much or little effect on your life on Exilian as you want it to, so whilst you can leave the system remember that you have no obligations regarding your family and can quite happily skip off to do the projects and chatter that all of us really enjoy!

Name:Rob Mitchell, feel free to use any sort of derivation of the name.

Why I want to be a citizen: I've been at this community for a couple of months now and am loving it, there are some great characters here. I'd like to become more of a part of Exilian and hopefully contribute something more meaningful in the future. I've been posting regularly and visiting the site almost every day so I guess I'm getting the 'feel' for Exilian and what it's about.

Achievements: No real achievements, I hope to start a shadowrun sect that I'll make maps for if anyone wants to join when the game is released in June. I helped Jubal in a very minor way with Warhammer: Total War and once that's over I'll be more than willing to help whoever else wants a hand with a project, I'm learning things all the time so hope to be of real use soon.

Type of application: Patronage

Moved to vote under my patronage.

NB for future applicants, the "name" section on the example application does not mean you have to put your real name there if you want to maintain anonymity, your right to remain anonymous is strongly guaranteed on Exilian.

Oh for sure, I actually prefer using my real name to screen name online. Many thanks Jubal.

If you'd like your patron to be a specific person I'm sure that could be arranged as well. :)

Yeah, requesting a patron should be incorporated in the rights of our wannabe citizens!

Yeah, I need to clarify that in the rules; the idea should be that people who want to be your patron PM you once you've posted the application, then you accept one to take your application on.

Why I want to be a citizen: As you may have seen, I have applied for the admin post as well, and though I haven't been on Exilian long, I have done in the last few days, and will continue to visit the site and post regularly. I am very much enjoying being a part of the Exilian community and I feel that I can bring in new thread ideas (and hopefully recruit new members :P ).

Achievements: I haven't really achieved much as of yet, but I plan to start more threads in the Storyteller's Hall/Conservatoire (I wrote about this in my admin application). Things like more book reviews, fan discussion threads for LotR and ASoIaF (I'd really like to start a character analysis? thread for the latter - I may do that now). I also have other ideas to contribute to the YouTube channel possibly. :)

Why I want to be a citizen: I feel like I could help out around the site a little bit, and generally get to know people better. I am trustworthy, (Othko confirmed) and love using mods, (Which annoys Othko to no end when he starts Skyrim and has to let 150+ mods load and disable the ones he doesn't like. :P) I also want to vote and have a say in the site.

Achievements: Not really an achievement since it isn't exactly hard, but I have learnt HTML and am good with graphics software, doing things like restoring old photos and colourising them. I have also been active in the forum games, and would like to start some more threads in there.

Application type: Patronage.

Greetings prospective citizens, I feel like being patronising so you are welcome to offer your sword, bow, axe or pointy stick in fealty to the great house of Wibulnubniblia. Obviously I can't let any old (or young) scraglehead into my service so there will be tests of some kind. Terrible, grueling, costly tests.

Wibulnubiblia doesn't need you, but you might need it!

Ask Pentagathus to patronise you, I hear that guys awesome.

Greetings, citizens of Exilian!

I would like to apply for citizenship.

1. Why I would like to be a citizen
I have enjoyed participating in the forum over the last month; I hope and expect to continue to do so. As a reasonably active member, I would like to have the opportunity to take part in discussions and decisions on matters affecting Exilian.

2. What I think I can offer
As indicated in my Welcome thread (http://www.exilian.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3359.0), I'm not a game-player. Instead, I have long experience as an analyst and programmer (including HTML); I have a wide range of interests in science, history, geography and languages; I enjoy reading and talking about SF and fantasy. I have helped in various capacities with SF/fantasy conventions. I have had (and still have) various committee positions for societies in Cambridge, particularly as Treasurer; this includes taking an interest in constitutions and legal matters. In short, I think I have a range of experience and interests that would benefit Exilian.

3. Type of application: direct vote
(I understand that I can ask for a patron later if I wish)

Just a quick follow-up. I assume the vote is now open, and will run for a week or so. If anyone has any questions relating to my citizenship request, please feel free to ask me. I don't know whether PM, this thread or a new thread would be best - moderators?

1. Why I would like to be a citizen

I haven't been as active on the forums as I would like to be. That might be a strange way to start an application but I feel that as active as I have been it is nowhere near the level I hope to reach. In an age where forums are on the decline this one strikes me as the kind I miss from the golden years. From what I've been able to ascertain the vague principles behind Exilian as it stands today are ones that align fairly well with my personal motivations.

With the second upcoming Exilicon I feel it is only appropriate that I seek the approval of the community before becoming further involved. I don't wish to be an outsider interfering in your business, however well meaning I may be in my advisory bumbling!

2. What I think I can offer

A great deal of experience in all sorts of different things. During my student days I founded a student society which won Best Society in its second year. I've run a gaming magazine before (Issue 1 (http://www.qj.net/psp/magazines/new-psp-magazine-portable-life.html), Issue 2 (http://www.qj.net/psp/magazines/portable-life-issue-2-released.html). N.B. PSP magazines were usually collections of images formatted to the exact screen resolution of the PSP: 480x272. They'd sit as a folder on the device and the shoulder buttons made it easy to flip through the pages), I've admin'd a forum since 2005 (pretty much retired at this point), a video podcast (as part of my student society - 50 episodes), organised a number of events, worked at others (T in the Park, The International Festival of Falconry) in various roles.

That lot should probably have been bullet points. There's also the work I've done on tUGS (http://gorkamorka.co.uk/) creating new content for Gorkamorka, collecting old content, sorting out legal issues with regards to copyright wherever possible, and so on. These days I run Fox Box (http://fox-box.co.uk) (I have a thread here (http://exilian.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3779.0) where you can learn more if you're interested) where I sculpt miniatures and make copies, amongst other things.

I can also do things like video editing (unsurprising, I suppose!), image manipulation, DTP, a bit of coding (mostly PHP and MySQL at the moment but I hope to learn more when I have more time), a bit of server management (Nothing too advanced - I still hate setting up mail servers), and other generalised techy stuff.

3. Type of Application

Direct vote, I suppose. I hope you'll have me.

Why i want to be a citizen: I enjoy the community that i have seen (so far) and have an interest in many of the current discussions going on. I have been directing a forum RPG game at The Jolly Boar Inn, and through it, as well as several other threads I have really enjoyed my time so far on this forum. I have been pretty active (17.25 posts a day if you're inclined to believe in the website and its fancy "statistics"), and wish to delve deeper into the community to see whats going on and try and involve myself more.

Achievements: Initiating BearKnight's Deeper n' Darker RPG Adventure, Posting regularly, Being Friendly

Why I want to be a citizen: I joined Exilian in November last year (wow). I was sniffing around for communities where I could talk about my game, and of all the places I visited, this is the one I keep returning to; it's nice here. I am far from the most active member, but I do like to check in with the game development threads fairly regularly to see what people are up to and so after a year of intermittent lurking and posting, I would like to rise to the level of citizen.
:ogre:

Achievements: My greatest achievement is that I once correctly guessed that I would post next on the thread entitled "Guess Who Will Post Next... II!".

Why you wish to become a citizen: I've been a member of Exilian for around three months and really like both the concept of this site and the community. I am not the most active member but I do try to post at least a couple times a week!

Any things you feel should be taken into consideration (modding achievements for example): I haven't done much modding here although I believe I've been featured on the front page a couple of times. (Thanks for that!)

Whether you want to make a PATRONAGE application or a DIRECT VOTE application: Patronage I guess?
Title: Re: Citizenship Applications Thread
Post by: Jubal on February 25, 2018, 09:00:43 PM
Ooh, yes, "modding achievements" is a slightly outdated thing to have in the form, which was designed when a rather higher proportion of our members were mainly game modders!

Thanks, we'll get that sorted soon :)

Hello Exilians!

Name
Rich or Tusky (née kinklade). I just changed my forum name from kinklade to Tusky because that's more similar to my game dev nom de plume. Sorry if that causes confusion and/or hysteria

Why you wish to become a citizen.
I'd like to be considered as a citizen because I like seeing what people are working on and chatting about it. I hope to share more about the projects I'm working on too. I've been contributing more actively over the last few weeks and like to carry on spreading the good vibes.

Any things you feel should be taken into consideration
I donated a couple of copies of my retro squirrel-em-up "Escape From BioStation" to the prize pool for the site's 10th birthday competition.
I actually first signed up a couple of years back to get some feedback on it but didn't because I just got too caught up in development.

Minor moderation/admin note: after discussions with various possible applicants recently, it transpired that the sample application's use of a "name" field had left some people thinking that their real-space name was required. It isn't - the expectation was that people would put their username not their real name - and indeed the name field isn't required at all for an application. I have updated to sample application to read Name/Username to hopefully clarify this a bit.

Why I want to be a citizen: Hi! I'm Joe and I've decided it's probably time that I finally submit a citizenship application, seeing as I've been hanging around Exilian to a greater or lesser degree for... about a decade now, I think? That's rather concerning. Anyway, I'm sure Jubal was up to something or other interesting in here that I got dragged into back then, and I've been sort of hanging around and telling myself "I should probably post more in here sometime, the culture and community seem excellent and it's generally a nice and positive thing that there's a classic-style webforum community still hanging on in these days of social media" (and then not actually posting more) ever since! But I've been turning up to Exilian pub-hangouts frequently and really enjoying them and the people I've met and conversations I've had, and thought it was finally time to actually start contributing properly to the forum itself  :) (also, any website that has such an exceptional smiley-selection interface is definitely one I want to be involved with!)

Achievements: I'm not really sure I have many of these yet... I have a number of overly ambitious project ideas rattling around my head at any given time, but they usually don't make it far enough into the creative process to be actually ready to be shown to the forum. I did help out with some testing and minor design suggestions for the Coding Medieval Worlds gather.town venue, and hopefully my latest odd idea-turned-maybe-actual-project (a sort of Disco Elysium-spoof adventure game where the player wakes up to the horrifying, existentially shattering realisation that they're a Liberal Democrat parliamentary election candidate) will end up progressing to the point that I can share it with you all!
