Title: MoD's Baking Tutorials!
Post by: Lady Grey on July 12, 2014, 02:47:18 PM
So, I want to start these soon (I finish work for summer on Wednesday, and hopefully our broadband will be sorted soon!) :D

What to do first though?
Victoria Sponge is really easy, and I love that's it's a 'courting cake'.
Exilian cupcakes - I'm thinking chocolate cakes, with blue vanilla icing.
Cookies/biscuits - also easy enough - I've done Pokéball sugar cookies before.

Thanks for the feedback :D

P.S. Wish we could've made the convention, and I could've handed out cupcakes :(

I think the sponge would be a good starting point. Also omnomnom sponge. Then Exilian cupcakes for episode II  :)

So how are you going to do these? Video?

Well, i was going to get SotK to film them (sort of over my shoulder so it's from my perspective and you can see what's going on) and put them on the Exilian Channel on YouTube, and post a link to them here. I'm not going to do voice over, I'll put in text boxes with instructions and find some background music (it's easier to follow written instructions than to keep pausing and having to play the same part over and over). I'll post a thread for any questions people have about them too :)

Having tested its cake-storing ability, I am impressed with said tin :P

Hoping to do the first one (Exilian Cupcakes!) really soon (like, tonight or tomorrow soon), but as we've not yet got a camcorder, it'll be pictures (lots of them, step-by- step) and instructions rather than video.
And, looking at how they turned out on the practice bake, they could double as Frozen cupcakes (possibly with vanilla sponge rather than chocolate) depending on your preference. :P

First tutorial has been filmed today - Exilian Cupcakes (in celebration of Exilicon 2014) :D

Need to edit it, and hopefully it will be on the YouTube channel really soon :)

Question: do I disable comments on the video itself and put in the video that questions and suggestions should come to Exilian.co.uk? (On the offchance anyone has any? ) :P

My sister once made me an iced sponge for my birthday. It was slightly overcooked and crunchy and the icing was fairly hard too. Was amazingly good. Best cake I've ever had.
So how would one go about slightly overcooking or otherwise crunchifying a spongecake?

Sorry, I will release tutorial 1 soon! (I started a new job on Monday, it's been really busy)

Hmm, I would say leave it in a few minutes longer (Literally 5 minutes - too long would really burn it) or maybe have the oven a fraction hotter than it says? (It's not an exact science - but I'd say that's usually what causes it when it accidentally gets overcooked) :)

This question has nothing to do with baking (unless you have a very strange suggestion for me) but I seem to recall you being one who knows of the making of clothing and costumes so I shall ask here anyway. Do you have any suggestions as to how one would go about dressing as a dwarf or another short and bearded character from middle earth? Was just going to dress in rustic looking clothes and go as a hobbit but I'd have to shave now.

I have a new computer now, so at some point soon (an evening this week, or perhaps the weekend) I'll get around to editing and rendering the video for this tutorial :) .

This time, it's SotK's fault for working all the time :P

Also, I'm worried they're going to be underwhelming now :P

All future tutorials will definitely be picture tutorials :)
