I'm still looking for a program to numbercrunch this lot properly, It'll be interesting to look for political/religious correlations if there are any, if there's a line of best fit (i.e. is there a correlation between economic and social policy) and so on and so forth.

Is Karma religion?
Title: Religious/Politcal Profile thread
Post by: SubRosa on February 11, 2009, 01:09:06 AM
Quote from: "stormcloud"
Witch as in Wiccan

No. In modern practice, Wicca is a very specific set of traditions that are part of the umbrella of Witchcraft, with well-defined beliefs and practices (such as believing in the Wiccan Rede and the Law of Threefold Return, using a common framework for ritual and myth, etc...).

That is not me. My practice is much more individually-oriented (old school Wiccans will tell you there is no such thing as a Solitary Wiccan), and not bound by Wicca's customs and ideas. I am closer to being a Shaman than a Wiccan, but I am not a Shaman either. I am simply a Witch. Or if you really want to be specific, a priestess of Hekate.

Is Karma religion?

It is an idea embraced by some religions and philosophies, to one extent or another. The basic idea being that what goes around comes around.

But I thought I was a proper neo-Liberal. Turns out I'm not.

Brown and Bush are Liberal, and I hate them both and most of their ideals. I feel they're idiots who have no idea how the world should work and aren't fit to run the 100m at school sports day, let alone run a country.

If I oppose their ideas, I guess that makes me more left than right.

I knew i was relatively centrist. I took a Human Rights course where the teacher and other students would lambast corporations and rich people, etc. I was always the devils advocate because i disagreed and was articulately vocal about it. I only had to tell one kid he was dumb.

Edit: Yeah i though about being an Omnian, but i hate talking to people about leaflets and educational writings.

I have to say I'm pretty (on this test, very) left wing. On the other hand I often manage not to come over that far left as I'm generally pretty pragmatic about how a leftwing agenda should be achieved.

My latest result:
L/R - -9.3
Authoritarian/Anarchist - -8
Religion - Atheist.

And I tend to come across as less than that when you talk to me, as I moderate my ideas to something if not reasonably achievable, at least something theoretically possible in my lifetime.

I actually am less extreme than I come out; mostly because I'm a pragmatist to the extent at which the ideal is in fact never the desired option as it's unworkable and thus problematic for the people it's meant to benefit.

I wouldn't say "relatively almost completely opposite"; I'd say one is more neutral than the other, but hardly relatively almost completely opposite. :P

On another note I think I should take the quiz again.
edit, this time:
Economic Left/Right: -1.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.82

Did a flip-flop over the centre of the graph. I'm not going to change it though, I don't really like the structure of the quiz because I could answer most of the questions a little differently every time.

cg: The test gives underlying motivations, the ones they show on the website are based on actual positions. The fact is that America is very, very far to the right as its baseline, and Obama isn't actually doing much about that or challenging the basis of the super-rich and corporate power being the main driving forces in society.

I'd bet that if Obama did the test himself he'd come out somewhere in the middle of the lower left quadrant. Due to the dominant economic theories all being very free-market based, even someone who is mostly in favour of a thriving, competitive market of small businesses and low personal taxation might well come out as to the left of a bunch of politicians who are happy to watch transnational companies turning a free market system into an oligarchy and sit on their asses.

NA: It's my corrupting influence, everyone seems to head left after a while on here.  :P

The UK isn't really that far to the left of the US, economically. We have a few vestigial bits like the NHS and a slightly larger benefit system, but other than that we're economically running in pretty much exactly the same way you are.

Two positive quadrants! Practically un-heard of!  :o

I'm probably thinking too much, but I can't take this test on its own terms. At the very least, I need a "Don't know" or "Neutral" option, and preferably a "This question is badly worded; give me a better one". I could rant about individual questions, but I don't have time. All that said, I strongly suspect I'm somewhere in the lower left quadrant of the graph.

Religion: atheist probably comes nearest.

Another resit: -8.62 -7.33 this time, still happily floating around the far liberal left.  :P

You're slightly less communistic than before. :)

I'm pretty convinced that this is tied to electoral cycles - I get more left wing the further from an election I am, as close to elections I start realising that I'll need to compromise some of my idealism to find someone to vote for.

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.46

Getting a bit more Libertarian but I consider myself to be a balanced individual.

I'm using liberalism in the British sense.

I should do a video about all the different uses of that word...

I just noticed that 'political' has been spelled wrong this whole time. :(

As long as it isn't socialism or communism, go for it :P

I am more keen with converting everyone to liberalism, mainly because I find that regardless of economic beliefs, people who are socially (British-sense) liberal are people I can have sensible conversations with. Committed authoritarians, regardless of political stripe, tend to be much more dogmatic and talking to them is often somewhat akin to trying to break down the gates of Minas Tirith by repeatedly headbutting them. Sure, it may work eventually, but it's just not worth it most of the time.

Left/Right: 2.12
Up/Down: -2.87

Religion: complicated, but I usually go with "unaligned theist"

The initial graph has one colour for Christian and one for Catholic.  SAY WHAT?

Anyway
Economic Left/Right: -5.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.23

Anglican (liberal anglo-catholic)

Also, can't help but agree with Glaurung on the need for a neither agree or disagree category. Or a "I dont't have a clue about this issue" category in a couple of cases...

According to a 29 question quiz, in american politics anyway I am:

  Mostly Liberal

You believe in social welfare and equality. You side with the liberal agenda in most arguments and tend to vote that way. You can see the conservative point of view but have a hard time fully buying in to most of their arguments.

Good men love freedom, others love license - paraphrased from someone
