Title: Age of Sigmar
Post by: Gen_Glory on July 28, 2015, 05:44:53 PM
So I was wondering what warhammer was up to nowadays and OH LAWDY

It seems Warhammer Fantasy is being replaced with 40K lite

Not sure how I feel about seeing a beloved game change so radically (I would say ruined but I can't say that til I try it)

So what are everyones opinions on this??

As a fluff gamer, a little part of me is now broken :(

Seriously though, it's gone from a mid range fantasy that is generally relatively low/gritty with high fantasy flourishes to being beyond high fantasy. The AoS fluff is fantasy at arsonist in a marijuana farm levels of high.

The interim rules for old models are apparently intentionally stupid to shame people into moving to new armies - apparently with those new armies it isn't a bad game mechanically though.

I have 2 major problems with AoS:
1) Few decades of lore being replaced by something that's rather mediocre
2) Lack of depth and strategy

That's enough for me.
I won't be joining the AoS club.

I like the look of the new Khorne models, though.
I might get then eventually, convert them a bit and base them on square bases.

the rules are at least free

though reading through them it turns out it has gone pay 2 win as the only limit to your forces are the amount of models you have....

I hadn't noticed that. Oh dear. :/

An actual quote:

Quote
You can continue setting up units until you
have set up all the units you want to fight in
this battle, or have run out of space.

Well that does sound rather wibulnib, is there any optional point  system for those that don't want to play like cretins?

Finally sick of people complaining about things being too many or too few points? Guess the points values yourselves!

Once Bitten has made a good video about this:

So guys and gals, I bought a half of the AoS starter box today.
I chose Khorne forces and I'm intending to put them on square bases and use for 8th edition.
I've always wanted a WoC mono Khorne force, ever since I've started collecting Warhammer miniatures, but I didn't really like the range of models.

And once I've opened the box... Holy mother of pineapple throwing armadillo, the models are mind-numbingly gorgeous.  :balrog:
I've never seen models this detailed before...
Not even Forge world models.

I'm  in awe.
I don't like the new ruleset and Sigmarines, but these guys are the definition of perfection.

I don't actually like having whole armies of super high detail models, not least because my painting skills won't do them justice anyway so why bother? I like having high-detail intricate centrepieces, but my regular grunts I'd like to be able to make look good with simple, primary paint schemes.

I got much better at painting recently, so I find it pretty nice. :D
Gives me a chance to win more points for painting on tournaments.
And it keeps me busy for a while. :P

the sigmarites look way too much like space marines
have the chaos warriors kept their armour style or is that being changed too?

I think they're more similar - they already looked like the 40K ones rather more anyway!

The style is consistent.
And I like these guys a lot.
They match the existing artwork really well. ;D

And Jubal's right. Chaos warriors have a style very similar to 40k chaos marines.
But somehow I have a feeling that it would be easier to convert Age of Sigmar Blood warriors into Khorne marines (similar to 40k starter set Dark vengeance) than the other way around.

I have well and truly fallen out of the hobby, something I never thought would actually happen. 8th ed shook me, and I stubbornly clung to 7th like a drowning man, but this new direction the fluff has taken is too much for me.

I refuse to give Games Workshop any more of my hard earned cash.

Have you considered getting into more skirmish gaming? There are some nice settings out there.

Between cash constraints and a lack of settings which capture me in the same way, no I have not really. It's a pity, but that's the way it is. :(

Is fair enough. I'm not doing much gaming at all; I got to the Uni's tabletop society sometimes but mostly end up boardgaming rather than anything else.

Yeah, I'm getting my gaming fix from the 3 Coins sessions, which are a surprising amount of work to organise, run and then recap.

Back on topic though, I don't think I will ever reconcile with this new direction.

Yeah - Warhammer was always meant to be a bit of a mix of low and high fantasy, but it's now... so high fantasy it's getting to "arsonist on a weed farm" levels.

I loved that line. :P

I think my biggest disappointment is with the loss of the world itself. I had a lot of time invested in the setting itself. It was a fantastic setting, but it has now been reduced to a heap of bubbles floating around...

You should check out 9th age PG.
It's pretty good. Not excellent, but it works.

I do wonder whether AoS will get more world building over time - I feel like without it they'll have difficulty keeping people coming back.
