Title: Forum Discussion
Post by: Marcus on August 11, 2009, 08:02:35 PM
This thread is for discussing the forum, mainly its underlying software (Zetaboards) and any issues/requests. It will be checked by myself and Jubal, and if there is a fixable problem, we will try to sort it. Unlike the website, which is completely made by me, the forums are predigested for the admins, so it is easier to set it up, but also means we have less control over what it can and cannot do. So keep that in mind when reporting issues, as we may not be able to sort them.

Updated portal news to cover the new release of The Horde Lands.
Title: Forum Discussion

Edited the settings on the games forum so people's post counts are not raised by posting there. This is a trivial issue, but some of the people here wouldn't have nearly as many posts counted if the games forum was no post count from the start. So posting in the inane threads in there just to up your post count is now a no-no. Have a good day.

Ok, added fast reply to all forums that do not already have it. A few clicks isn't going to stop someone making a moronic comment either way.

To edit the news in the portal news box, go here: http://s9.zetaboards.com/exilian/admin/?menu=genadmin&c=27&id=331 (http://s9.zetaboards.com/exilian/admin/?menu=genadmin&c=27&id=331)

Is it normal that the Add Reply button sometimes goes to the Full Reply Screen?

Which it did when I clicked it this time.

Only if you haven't entered any content, as far as I know. If there is a bug, I can't fix it, but I might be able to report it to Zetaboards.

I always type something before I click it but it goes to the edit page anyway. Most of the time, sometimes it adds the reply immediately.
Oh well.

Is there good reason behind the post character count being restricted? My main post of my mod can only show about 15% of what I want to put in :-\
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Marcus on May 23, 2011, 05:04:10 PM
I'll have a look at that, the post character count shouldn't be limited.

Something's messed up.  I went from a rep of 12 to 42 in one night.  I'm now the highest followed by Debux, and then all the people who actually deserve it. (*cough* Jubal *cough*) Anyone know what happened?

EDIT: Yep something is definitely weird.  I just gave Marcus a rep and he went from 10 to 52.  On the one hand, he deserves it, on the other, I'm a little miffed that I'm not top any more. :D
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Son of the King on June 02, 2011, 03:00:12 AM
Indeed something does appear to be strange. Even weirder is the fact its still set to give 1 power per rep given. I just tried it and it gave CG about 10 points instead of 1. Marcus may have a better idea of how to fix it than I do though.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: debux on June 02, 2011, 04:09:01 AM
I agree... I remember when I had 10 rep points, it seems that Goldy gave me 30 in one go.

Right, there is now a mod that password protects boards on SMF 2.0, which means that in my eyes we can pretty much go ahead with the update. Are there any other features that people want me to check SMF 2.0 can provide before I update?
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on September 18, 2011, 06:36:13 PM
Nope; I've already found chatboxes for it, coloured names are the other one but those aren't 110% essential.

In other words, upgrade time!  ;D

As far as the Karma system goes, reckon we'd be able to give the reason why we're giving the karma please, like on the old site? Cause I used to get warm, fuzzy feeling whenever I read anyone's. It made me feel good about the world, knowing that somewhere, there were people who would give recognition publically with no fear of reprisals. Don't care that this place is on the internet, where quite honestly it surprised me more, because this place exists in a region where discrimination and verbal insults are commonplace.

Ok I've had my say.

What font is the "Exilian" title, at the top of every page, in? I'm planing on making my own.

It's called Vinque. Another very similar one is called Kelmscott.

Told you I'd remember eventually. ;D

I used Photoshop CS3. The font I used is built in, but I think I added the kelmscott later.

Is there a possibility of a memory leak of some sort related to the forum? I left a page open to Exilian nearly all day and it had slowly climbed its memory usage rate to over 850,000K (starting from around 150,000).

I just came up with an idea to boost our activity, I don't know how effective it'll work though. We could go through all of the ZetaBoards forums, or some at least, and pull out some small ones that are still active and ask if they want to merge communities, as in they move over here. I'm sure there are plenty of forums out there that are just like Exilian... but if they are like us than they would probably have the same honor of their forum and not want to lose it. I guess it's worth a try though.

Title: Re: Forum Discussion

We could just go in as a double agent and stay around until about 100 posts maybe, depending on the type of the Forum. Than we can propose the terms and such. If they disagree than we ditch them forever and move onto the next forum... who'll do that however? I don't know, whoever wants to.

14. Site Finance

a) Exilian's banking is currently undertaken in the United Kingdom: this means that at least two members of staff, including the financial officer, must be British in order to authorise and manage payments.
b) Where the Technikos is the only British member of the administration team, a junior staff member under them should be appointed to act as second signatory on any necessary financial documents.
c) The Technikos and second signatory are jointly responsible for presenting a brief overview of the site's accounts to its citizens twice each year, in June and November shortly before the election times detailed above.
d) The site's bank account will only be used to pay for services needed by this community, in accordance with the objectives in section 1 of this constitution.
I think we should be able to Donate to Exilian and when we have enough money we can move to a XenForo forum. I'm a member on a forum of this sort right now and I think it would be an awesome idea with the possibility to like peoples posts and stuff like that. I suggest you look at it. I don't know if other people are willing to donate but I will chip in $25 dollars. Come on Exilianites! Support your well beloved forum!

Our M&B mod lists, Jubal's Southern Realms an my M&B resources hold the places in top 10 topic by the number of views, and most of them are badly outdated. They're supposed to be one of the ways to recruit new people here, but it this case they look absolutely horrendous.
Mod lists need an update badly. Anyone got Warband?
I used to update those back when I was a moderator. Sadly, I don't have that much time on my hands these days.

- - - - -

EDIT :
Actually I'll update the Warband list.

- - - - -

And who is responsible for M&B section?
He/She should take care of the rest.
For Christ's sake our most important, stickied threads which keep us connected to Taleworlds (and thus keep us alive) haven't been updated in more than a year!

Global mods could also take care of this once in a while. I did the same back in my days. *grumble, grumble, grumble* (http://tomos.11.forumer.com/images/smiles/tomos/old_man_SMILEY.gif)
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on November 11, 2012, 01:10:19 AM
Officially those are now under Comrade_General's leadership, but he doesn't have Warband. PG has traditionally had that section to look after but he's away without leave.

And I very literally cannot put the time in at the moment.

You're right, we need to fix this, but currently I'm still putting in about twice the time I can afford and I don't have Warband, and all our other admins with M&B aren't active at the moment which is making life very difficult in the M&B section.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion

I've messaged PG on facebook, since he hasn't been on in over a month, we kind of need to either get him back or find a new C&C admin.

I guess we could try and find a junior staffer for the M&B section?

I've started working on the Warband lists.
If I manage to keep this pace, they'll be done in less then a week.

And that's because we got outdated and obsolete. We don't do much these days, apart from you and your RTW mods. We need a big project to revive this site.

Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on November 11, 2012, 12:33:33 PM
I'm just not sure we can sustain long-term growth purely through modding - getting the Academy running better again, or some of our programming projects, might be a better bet in some ways as those are genuinely unique to the site.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Silver Wolf on November 11, 2012, 12:47:26 PM
But the academy hasn't been updated for quite some time... And it only gets us a few people who came here for the modding part in the first place.

Reviving the modding part would be a much need infusion for this forum. Just to start things up again.
And bring back the old crew.

Your not a weight.

I was talking about our old projects and our modding crew which kept us active and connected to the rest of the sites.
They're one of the most important parts of this site, but they're horribly outdated.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on November 12, 2012, 02:10:38 AM
Fair point. I can't be pushing hard at that side of it, though; I need someone else to be willing to put in the time.

I mean... Southern Realms, Narnia, and Warhammer were/are all my projects, and I can't work rapidly on three projects of that scale anymore, it's simply not going to happen. We need to get to a stage where staff are more key because of their work facilitating projects than their actual work on said projects, perhaps.

How about a peace of original software?

I know we're all busy but I think a professional, well marketed program could really draw some new talent to the site, what I don't know is how viable such a project would be.

How many people do we have that can effectively program, what else do we need to consider and what would we do exactly?

The question is what's our best and how do we give it?

It shouldn't be too much hassle, besides it makes more sense to simply have the domain under a registrar and use a more specialized web host for the website. If you want, I can PM what I use personally.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on February 27, 2014, 12:08:57 AM
The domain is with 123reg IIRC, the web hosting is with GD.

The issue is just mostly anyone having the time to take it on; I'm already doing the majority of the admin and I'm currently totally pushed to my limits, CG is Head of Staff but has a real job etc which is time consuming, and Son of the King (tech staffer) is quite inactive at the moment for similar reasons. If we had the staff time to do it, sure, but certainly it's not something I can currently commit to myself and the other relevant people seem to be in worse states for work than I am if anything.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Mars on February 27, 2014, 02:16:07 PM
123-Reg is a decent domain name registrar, especially for a .co.uk TLD. If you want, I can take a crack at it for you, I have the free time to do so however as can be expected, it would not be the best move to put your trust in someone who has just come back. I can offer guidance though, if it's desired.

What benefits d'you think we'd really gain from a change of host (as opposed to simply spending more money)?

How much do you currently spend now per month, as it might even be cheaper. I believe with a switch, you'd have less chance of downtime, as you wouldn't be using a solely domain registrar for web hosting, but one which would be more dedicated to hosting websites.

Hmm... I'll do some more research into blocking them. By the way, you might want to consider specific IP ranges/host providers to see if that removes some of traffic.

Edit: Try this setup (http://www.3ptechies.com/design-dev/stopped-link-spamming-bots-registration-smf-forum.html).
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on March 07, 2014, 02:02:28 AM
I'm reluctant to block big IP ranges because so many IPs are pooled nowadays and we'd risk hitting regular users.

I've already replaced the basic Captcha with the Arantor captcha, I've installed the mod you posted earlier, and we have one custom question in place.

Link blocking I'm much more dubious about, simply because a lot of the people we need to cater for include for example game devs who start by dropping in and posting their stuff; I think people do need to be able to post links from the start.

Which doesn't leave us much - I could tweak the custom questions?
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Mars on March 07, 2014, 02:08:50 AM
Simply block the link posting of new members until they show themselves to not be spambots after which point, they are granted the privilege?

There are certain IP ranges (such as the Ukraine) which are rarely going to be getting actual members registering, yet there is always the chance that legitimate users are affected, and I'm certain if that's the case, you could always set up an email address which they could contact to get their IP whitelisted. If it turns out they are a spambot, back on the blacklist.

Could potentially tweak the custom questions a little and see if it works.

On a side note, if the same links keep getting spammed, just blacklist the URLs so they can't be posted.

I've done a question tweak, and I'll get on and blacklist the URLs tomorrow. Bedtime now, methinks.

Thanks for all the help, Mars :)
No problem, hopefully the false member registration rate will severely shrink, but it's usually an arms race. Sleep well!

Hey, I like Kitchen bots.
Kitchen bots are cool.

Yet the problem is that it could make Exilian look bad as it would give off the impression that not enough was being done to prevent junk posts / accounts from being made.

I was just browsing Nexus forums and I saw something pretty cool.
They have a part of profile where you can show your computer's performances.
Since we do a lot of modding, implementing something like that would actually be pretty useful.

This is how that part looks on the Nexus:

Processor:          Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory:             4Gb RAM
Motherboard:
Graphics Card:   NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
Soundcard:        Realtek HD Audio output
Monitor Size:      21"

Is the site's domain not set in the forum software somewhere?

The notification emails only include the URL from /forum/ and leave out the root domain resulting in unclickable links.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion

Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Glaurung on October 07, 2015, 09:13:53 PM
Hmm... a trawl of the admin menu has turned up Configuration -> Server Settings -> Database and Paths; this contains an entry for "Forum URL", which is currently set to /forum

There's a warning at the top of this page: Be very careful with these settings, as they may render the forum dysfunctional.

The SMF online help (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Server_settings) repeats the warning, and then says of the "Forum URL" setting:
Forum URL - The URL to your forum's directory, without the trailing slash (/). This URL is used throughout SMF - all dynamically generated URLs (except those with their own settings) are based on this setting.

Since I've not managed to find any admin settings related to notification e-mails at all, I suspect that this setting is being used when e-mails are created. However, it's almost certainly being used in a lot of other more significant places too, and I'm very wary of changing it. So we might just be stuck with this until someone at SMF redesigns the software and setting structure to disentangle the URL used for e-mails from the one used internally.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Flamekebab on October 07, 2015, 10:16:51 PM
On that front I have good news. The URL you set is written to http://exilian.co.uk/forum/Settings.php (capitalisation intentional)

Currently that line reads:
Code: [Select]
$boardurl = '/forum'; # URL to your forum's folder. (without the trailing /!)
I've backed up the Settings.php file and I assume you also have FTP access. If the forum suddenly breaks when the URL is changed just restore the old Settings.php file  :)

From what I can see in the file the forum software itself runs using an absolute filename  ( /home/content/o/l/d/oldmarcus/html/forum ) rather than the board's URL so it shouldn't break even if the domain isn't valid.

Title: Re: Forum Discussion

Has someone altered the way the forum handles people being logged in, any time in the last few days? Before the weekend, I stayed logged in on a particular browser for weeks, possibly months, at a time, even if I closed the browser and shut down the computer. Now, it seems I get logged out automatically every time I close the browser, and I have to log in again the next time I open it. The enhanced security is probbaly good, but it would be nice to know when someone is working on this sort of thing.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Jubal on November 25, 2015, 03:39:14 PM
I've not touched anything, or added any updates, and it still works for me as normal. Sounds more like your browser is removing, losing or resetting the cache/cookies somehow?
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: SaidaiSloth on November 26, 2015, 11:27:32 PM
I know Microsoft edge deletes history and cookies automatically by default, don't think any other popular browsers do, although you should check your settings just in case.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Glaurung on November 27, 2015, 08:52:24 PM
I'm using Firefox on two different PCs, one running Windows 7, the other running Vista. They're both still requiring me to log in every time. I cleared cookies for Exilian on the Vista PC (but not the other one, as far as I remember) at the weekend, but it should have re-created one by now, surely. Safari on my iPhone seemed to get really confused about whether I was logged in around the weekend as well, but has now settled down again, leaving me logged in all the time. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a Firefox upgrade at the weekend; maybe some other component has changed without anyone knowing? Anyway, it's an irritation rather than a significant problem, and it will probably go away as mysteriously as it appeared.
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Glaurung on December 12, 2015, 12:03:49 AM
Another slightly random technical question: is it possible to switch Exilian from plain old HTTP to HTTPS? If so, is it just a set-up option for the web server, or would we have install new server software, or change our set-up with GoDaddy?
Title: Re: Forum Discussion
Post by: Son of the King on December 12, 2015, 10:43:40 AM
We'd need to pay for a certificate, or else use a self-signed one and not really get much benefit. I imagine it'll be easy enough on GoDaddy's UI, but I don't know how much they charge for the privilege.

I don't know, alas - I can't think of how that would be done, except by changing our system to change the reference instead of the image filename, but that would make the whole process take several times longer :/

I forgot to update this to say we're on 2.0.14 now we've moved hosts. We're on 2.0.14!

Also yesterday I installed a new mod for post reassignment: this allows admins to reassign posts between members. I'm thinking it could be useful for eg posting articles, as it allows an admin-editor to edit & post the article at their leisure and then reassign it to the author's account.

A Japanese ashigaru ("ashigaru"): :ashigaru:
An arab-style swordsman (code "rijal", an arab word for infantry): :rijal:

The forum has now been upgraded to SMF 2.0.19: this is a regular patch for security and bugfixing purposes.

Excellent - we are now Cyrillic and Methodic!

I'm now sort of sad there was never a Methodic Order of monks or something - the pun potential would have been excellent.

Title reverted to normal (hopefully, when it works through my browser's caching) now the Feb/Mar Exilian 'Festive Season' is done.

It is now twelve days after Orthodox christmas, which I think is about as far as we can reasonably stretch the definition, so down goes the Christmas banner.

I still see the logo, it could be a caching issue tho.

Yeah, Cntrl+F5 should usually fix that if you're using Firefox (I think Chrome works the same but I'm not using that as much any more).

And now if you do so, you should see the Cyril & Methodius day banner, which unusually is going up a well timed full week before the day itself :)

The C&M day banner is duly down (this really is the banner-switching bit of the year, what with the birthday banner going up in March).
