Update June 2018

Bit of an exciting time at present as Frozen Skies finally comes together. So the main topic this week is the timeline for Frozen Skies' release. Additionally, I'll talk about future plans which include future products, etc.

Utherwald Press / Frozen Skies Session One: Getting Airborne
« on: May 28, 2018, 03:25:09 PM »
After the 'warm-up' session a couple of weeks back, the group began its first proper session of the campaign. This was where the group got their characters established and how they worked (or not worked) together as a team. It was also interesting in that there was some unexpected aerial combat, though more on that later on.

Utherwald Press / Frozen Skies: Expanded Airship Rules Ideas
« on: May 21, 2018, 09:47:44 AM »
So running a Frozen Skies campaign gives me the opportunity to try stuff out beyond the typical scope of a one shot adventure. One of the ideas that I wish to develop and playtest is expanded rules for airships and combat involving them. This will of course feed into Skies of Crimson, the next book that is planned for Frozen Skies.

Utherwald Press / Frozen Skies Session Zero: Taking Flight
« on: May 14, 2018, 03:41:12 PM »
Some back I mentioned about running a Frozen Skies campaign, recently had a character creation session or 'Session Zero' if you will. Partially because we had a new player and partial because it had been a while since we last played anything Savage Worlds related, we did a short combat to get to grips with how everything works. So this week's post will be a rundown of the characters and an after action report of the brief combat. Going forward, I'll be alternating between campaign posts and Utherwald Press related posts.

Utherwald Press / The Gwentshire Chronicles: The Mist-Bound
« on: May 07, 2018, 11:51:02 AM »
We're returning to the County of Gwentshire and taking a look at a few ideas concerning the Mist-Bound. This group of entities serve as sentinels, standing guard against otherworldly beings trying to break through the weak point in reality located in Gwentshire.

Doing things a little differently this week by having this week's post up on Patreon before it goes live on the blog.

Utherwald Press / April 2018 Update

We're over a quarter of the way into the year and its looking like Frozen Skies will soon be ready. Though still a bit quiet on the events front and other big announcements, but there is a little bit of news there. Plus there is other Frozen Skies related news that may be of interest to folk.

As the Gwentshire Chronicles setting idea seems to have been a big hit I've decided to do a follow-up post. Its a general overview of the County of Gwentshire, noting places of interests. It also gives a rough idea of the geographic layout of the county along with little glimpses at its history.

Expect further posts as I explore some concepts for the setting, though people have asked about cross-generational stuff.

Utherwald Press / Setting Idea: The Gwentshire Chronicles
« on: April 16, 2018, 03:12:39 PM »
Whats this? Another Setting Idea and entry on the 'Would Like To Do Someday' List?!

Been toying for some time with the idea of a British supernatural/horror setting, but so far I've struggled with a way of making it stand out. Recently I believe that I've finally cracked it; One location (a fictional English county) but with the option of different time periods.

Basically means that a game in the setting can be set at any period throughout history, from Roman and Medieval times through the Victorian period to the World Wars and 21st Century.

Utherwald Press / Alyeskan Gazetteer: Grimsport
« on: April 09, 2018, 01:29:57 PM »
Alyeska is home to be many settlements; some little more than mining camps whilst others are fully fledged towns. Most were founded either in areas rich with natural resources or close to readily available water. All usually have some sort of reputation for good or ill; Grimsport sits within the latter.

Utherwald Press / Re: Rogue's Gallery: Kaelin Madigan

Kaelin's lucky she's what people would consider an 'upper class' escort, they're basically considered to be exotic. She wouldn't hide what she is when approaching a mark, but out on the street she would wear a headscarf especially in the company of a client.

The other Genchi in the similar line of work are known as 'gutter class' and only earn a handful of coins, they're considered to be the ones to go to whether you're drunk, doing it for a dare or are truly desperate.

Stories and AARs / The Book

An attempt at a Lovecraftian tale, ironically written at least six years before I read any of H.P. Lovecraft' works.

The Book

It was a balmy summer's day when I found myself with time on my hands and little to do. I heard about some real gems of a shop tucked away on the narrowed and much more quieter streets of the city away from the main shopping area. Small cafes, old record and clothes shops marked the semi-official boundary between the 'High Street' big brands and the smaller 'budget' shops that were the haunts of students and bargain hunters. Gradually these gave way to buildings that had weathered war and high water only to be seemingly forgotten by time, these were gunsmiths and old fashion tobacconists with grimy signs that read 'H.T. Wilkinsons, EST 1743' from their frontages as I walked past. Though there was a bookshop partially hidden down an alley with lead-frame dusty windows and a frontage in dire need of a lick of paint. It was hard to tell whether the place was still in business since the leather bound volumes (wouldn't be surprise if they were first editions) appeared to have a thick layer of dust resting on their cracked covers.

The door was ajar and so I gently pushed it open to be greeted by a gloomy, oil lantern lit scene of books everywhere on every possible surface. Like those on display in the window, all were leather bound printed decades, if not a century, ago and had a coating of dust. Picking a book at random to flick through with great care I saw that it was a hand written original most likely dating from the early seventeen hundreds, though the subject was something that didn't hold much interest. I found my eyes coming to rest on a large, dark leather journal sat one of the upper shelves. It had a strange glint that I soon realized was a brass lock and lock along with a fastener that held the book closed. Not sure how I I was stood there for, but a voice whispered in my eye. "It draws you in doesn't it?"

Quickly jumping back in shock and crying out in surprise I turned to see an old man, the shop owner I hazard, staring at me. "Sorry, wasn't sure whether anyone was here."

"Tis fine sir, you're the first customer I've had all day....most folk just pass on by without a second look."

"I see, now the book...."

"Five pounds sir." The man replied, sucking on his teeth a little.

"I didn't say that I would buy it."

"Ah but you had the look sir."

"....Look?" I mumbled back. "Can't say I follow."

"The book interests you, more than any other that surrounds us both does it not?"

"Yeah....I does, though I expected the asking price to be much higher."

"Five pounds is a small price...."

"Very well, five pounds it is." I replied pulling out my wallet and a half crumbled note as my mind calculated possibly how much it was actually worth and how I could get selling it on. The man smiled as he took my money and handed over a brown paper bag to slide the book into, though I swore I almost heard him mumble, "....for a deposit."

In hindsight I should have pressed him about the comment, but at the time I just dismissed it and departed with my latest purchase in hand.

Stories and AARs / Legacy (PC Game Fanfic)
« on: April 05, 2018, 04:17:20 AM »
Bit of a blast from the past, a fanfic I wrote for the 2001 RPG Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura back in '08.

I may try and actually get it finished if I can remember the plot!
~ ~ ~

Legacy

A few years back some of you may recall hearing news of Arcanum's first airship, the IFS Zephyr, being shot down on its maiden voyage. Though I doubt that many  know of the more subtle events that spread across our fair land like a  tide of change, for the better...or as it turned out... the worse.

Cumbria lies in ruins, with the port town of Black Root being a mere ghost of its former self. The Kingdom of Arland (more commonly known by the name of its capital, Caladon) embroiled in a long drawn out war with the Unified Kingdom  headed by Tarant; due to the murder of King Farad arranged by a circle  of Tarantian society. Besides the war and the scandal, Tarant has her  own problems with the rampant rise of crime across the city and the ever  growing Orcish civil unrest!

Yet we must consider ourselves lucky  that we were spared an even greater threat, namely the end of all life  in Arcanum as we know it. I speak of the legend of the so-called 'Living  One', a subject which I shall that linger on for the story as been told  countless times. I along with a few chosen have met this person, a  lower class Half Elf bandit by the name of Tenae.

As I understand  it, her mother was Human living in a small village that unfortunately  drew the attentions of a Dark Elf raiding party. I shall not go into  deals, but what happened is what is often expected by barbarians on the  warpath. Needless to say that when Tenae was eventually born, both her  and her mother were shunned by the rest of the village. The villagers considered the young Half Elf to be a curse, or a blight if you prefer. As a result, unsurprisingly, the other children picked on her terribly, often beating her whilst the adults stood by and did nothing.

At the age of 14 a man tried forcing himself on her mother, Tenae ended up  killing the man and ran away with the man's pistol. She eventually became a feared bandit along the western tradeway routes, until one day she boarded the ill fated Zephyr in an attempt to evade capture by the Arlander authorities. Thus setting in motion a series of events that have  left their mark on the face of our once fair lands, and had altered the  world itself.

Despite her actions concerning the the town of  Stillwater and the elven capital, she eventually redeemed herself and  defeated the supposed Evil One, Kerghan.

Or so it seemed at the time, for as it turned out he still had a trick up his sleeve...

~ ~ ~ ~

I remember the day quite clearly when I first encountered her.

It was late winter and Tarant laid frozen beneath a thick layer of snow, it was the worst winter that we've had for some time. The trains barely ran due to the snow drifts that engulfed the great plains round the city,  whilst a number of streets in the poorer districts were also reportedly  sealed off by great banks of dirty, grey snow. A few even say that the great  factories of the city were for a time silent. Had I not some errands to  run I doubt that I would have even stepped outside for the best part of a  month!

Cursing as I went I made good progress up Kensington  Broadway and fortunately I only had a couple of orders to place with  the shopkeepers and a telegram to be dispatched. After they were done  and I had made a quick dash home I could had looked forwards to a nice  roaring fire and didn't have to worry about stepping outside for a few  more days. It was nearing to Winterfest time and I actually glad that I  hadn't received any invites, so I could sit back for a while and enjoy  it while it lasted.

Funny how fate works.

In my hurry home  to get back into the warmth I admit that I was rather careless and  slipped on a patch of ice that I had not foreseen. For my troubles I was  awarded the indignity of landing on my derriere in full view of Tarant's  upper society which, given the weather and all, thankfully few. I also  found myself to be in the mouth of some alleyway, a place that I usually  avoided at all cost given the nature of Tarant's backstreet society.

But  whilst I got back up onto my feet a heard a faint mumble, glancing  round I spotted what at first appeared to be a large sack. Though as I  stared the 'sack' shivered and I quickly realized that it was probably  some of the many disposed , or 'beggars' if you will, that iked out  their existence in the numerous rookeries and garbage piles throughout  the city. Thinking nothing of the poor blighter I turned to leave but I  stopped in my tracks when a female voice called out. "Wait!"

Turning round I saw that the figure was standing up with a worn blanket rapped round her serving almost as a makeshift robe. We both stared at each other for a moment and I saw the pointed ears for which marked her as having Elven heritage, though the features of her face proved that she had human blood as well. As I also noted she had pale skin, though at the time I thought it was due to the cold, and long, unkempt, dark hair. But most striking of all was the grey eyes that she had, though I saw that they briefly flashed.
She suddenly collapsed and I was brought out of my trance like state.

There was something about her which I couldn't quite put my finger and mostly  out of curiosity, and partly pity, I lifted her up best I could. She  seemed to be unusually light, though I put that down to lack of food, as  I carried her out on the street where I hailed a carriage.

Had I known what laid ahead I probably would have left her there, but something compelled me to take her with me.

Utherwald Press / Rogue's Gallery: Kaelin Madigan
« on: April 02, 2018, 04:36:37 PM »
Alyeska is a land of ample opportunity; some toil the land for the fruit of the earth whilst others seek precious minerals beneath it. For every soul seeking to make an honest living, there are many who seek to part fools from their gold through dishonest means. Thieves and bandits are a common plight in civilized lands, but there is another kind of scoundrel that is on the raise who uses trickery and deceit to get what they want.

Kaelin Madigan is one such person, using every trick up her sleeve to fleece others out of their heard earn coin.

Tis been a couple of months since out last update, so its kinda high time for a new one.

There is some news regarding the Kickstarter, chiefly how things are progressing on that front. There has also been some movement on the Cold War Skirmishes front as well. Finally, reports on the deployment of Utherwald Press later in the year.
