My only tiny critique is that mead is usually a deeper colour, I'd make it a bit darker and more orangey.  :P

In all seriousness, really nice work, just watched through the update vid. :)

Yes on the mead. We have a meadery near my house and I do drink it sometimes, but I was finding that the originally a darker color felt a bit too hard to make out on the screen. I'll have to tweak it. A bit of orange to it sounds like a good idea.

The current yellow would work better for cider perhaps if you're planning on including that?

Hi all. I realized I haven't posted here in quite a while. I've continued developing innkeep over the last year and a half, carrying out a big refresh of the graphics, and along the way figuring out what the core of the game is going to be. I'm looking forward to having a lot of the core game mechanics implemented by the end of the year.


There are a few development videos and posts on my page if you are interested. Most recently I made a working cellar. ;-)

Welcome, great to have you back! :) Definitely post some new material soon, would be good to see more of how things are going & more things to put in the newsletter is always nice.

I like the "dolls' house" style, as you put it, for things like the cellar; it works very well indeed. The games I've been making for a while haven't needed any of those sorts of spatial elements, but it was great to read how they were achieved and good food for thought!

It can be challenging sometimes working with the perspective, but it's let me do some interesting things. I think it's well suited to the kind of game I am making. If it was more of a general management/construction style sim I would want to go with isometric. But with the play area fixed, and the focus on the core game loop with narrative, this seemed like a more interesting way to go.



What I'm working towards at the moment is just getting the play space properly knocked into shape. That's all I've been doing for a few months now actually! Still a few more months to go. Once the foundation is good to go I will begin to introduce actual gameplay elements.

Yeah - I've always felt that building core mechanical stuff then gameplay is probably a better way to go. I never seem to manage to make myself do that, when I'm designing I always want to get to something I can playtest quickly, but I think building things like play space first is probably more efficient.

Nice, finally got round to having a watch - really interesting to see how you've put the whole thing together!

Also, remember you can embed videos here if that's ever helpful, there's a YouTube button somewhere in the options menu when you write a new post with the full interface.

We're planning on opening an articles section sometime soon, btw - if you think of anything more generalised you might want to write on any techniques/ideas you use (though of course plugging innkeep as your example ;) ), give me a shout, you're good at doing the explaining stuff (though of course you may well be too busy & understandable if so!) :)

That sounds like fun. I have learnt a few things about drawing game art side during the course of this project, since I started with practically zero experience. I could write about that if you like. Alternatively about the thinking that went into coming up with my game idea. There was a bit of a method involved that others might find helpful. If you have any suggestions let me know. ;-)
