Lady Grey (tries to) make things! (Sewing)
« on: March 21, 2016, 10:02:53 PM »
... I am in no way a particularly good seamstress, but I just finished a purse with a kit SotK's parents got me for my birthday, and I must say I'm pretty proud of it. :)
SotK's mum however is a fantastic seamstress, and helped me out, and also lent me her sewing machine (as I do have my own but haven't used it for quite some time and I'm not even sure I remember how) :P
I definitely plan to make more little things like this, and I'm pretty confident I could manage unsupervised next time :P

Nice work :) This reminds me I need to get round to buying a needle and thread (though only to do repairs on clothing, I haven't made anything from fabric since I had to in high school!)

I wish I'd've had the option to do textiles at school! It is useful to have sewing supplies on hand for repairs though :)

Wow!

I totally agree with you on school. I wish I'd received some formal instruction on the principles. The missus and I binge-watched The Great British Sewing Bee though. Does that count?

Thanks everyone :D

We watched series 1 of that at SotK's parents, but haven't seen any since because we don't have a TV in our apartment. Everyone on that was crazy good though :O

We were really inspired by the episode in which they made corsets. When we have a bit more space I reckon we'll have to make that happen.

At the moment we're pretty much restricted to breaking out the sewing machine to fix small issues with jeans!

Ooh, didn't see that one - I imagine they'd be quite tricky to make though.
SotK's mum actually made her entire outfit for the wedding - she's a great seamstress. :)

I don't even use my sewing machine, I just have a sewing box for repairs (and my hand sewing does leave a lot to be desired - my impatience shows through it xD )

My gran was a professional tailor, and made all her own clothes (and I mean ALL of them). I inherited all of her sewing gear when she passed away over ten years ago, but have just started to get back into it.

Her sewing machine is a serious piece of kit though. If I discover a quarter of its functions, I'll consider myself a success!

The purse is very pretty - what kind of kit was it?

It was a kit from U-Handbag - it was something like 'The Easy Peasy Purse' kit.
It came with the outer and lining fabric, interfacing, fleece, cotton, and embroidery thread, and the purse frame. (basically everything to make it) :P
And there were instructions, obviously :P

I'm more familiar with SotK's mum's sewing machine than my own, I haven't used mine in years! :O

Sounds cool, I'll give the company a Google :)

Tbh, sewing machines aren't too difficult in the first instance - straight stitch, zigzag stitch, pedal for starting and stopping. Any kind of maintenance is beyond me, though, way too many moving parts for my liking.
