He is a satirical genius, indeed.

Tolkien is one of mine, for creating one of the most detailed, complex and cool fantasy worlds EVER.

This is such a difficult question!

Tolkien is obviously right up there, as is George R.R. Martin, even if I find his books emotionally difficult to cope with :P I grew up with JKR and Enid Blyton, and C.S. Lewis...

And, though I've only read one of his books, it is certainly one of the best books I have ever read and reread; Paulo Coehlo.

Most effective elected official. Ever. (not counting Jubal)

He is Jubal the modder, Jubal the wayfarer, Jubal the admin. And he has come to me now, at the turning of the tide.

I have too many loved authors to choose a favourite nowadays
Jules Verne, H G Wells, Robert E Howard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Tolkien, Pratchett
Maybe I should read from some more recent authors...
Tis but a scratch...

Meh, old is gold.

I really want to get a copy of Lucian's True History, supposedly the world's first sci-fi work (2nd century AD, describes a war between the moon and the sun :P )

Another to add to the list is Phillip Pullman. I read His Dark Materials again recently and there's still so much I didn't pick up on in the previous 10(ish) readings.

Alan Moore. Fantastic character writer, excellent themes, superb, gritty, nihilistic dialogue and settings with just the right amount of comic relief.
Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense.
