As some of you may've picked up in all this furore, most confederate statues in the US are actually early C20th, put there to emphasise southern white identity during the Jim Crow era when new restrictions on eg black voting came in. Turns out that one of the most promising and effective confederate generals essentially became leader of a liberal (in the sense it was used at the time) pro mixed voting rights coalition of voters in Virginia - and was written out of the state's confederate-side history as a result.
