Hmm. Where do I start. First of all does any one play AOE 2.
-
I did... I have the conquerors expansion too...
It's one of my favorite games...
-
Moved to the correct place
I loved AOE2, lost my CD now though. I played Celts loads though, woad raiders were devastating at hitting enemy towncenters.
-
Teutonic knights were devastating too... Maybe a bit too slow, but they had loads of hit points and good attack...
-
Islands map -> Korean Turtle Ship spam. Best thing evar. :D
-
I used to play it, but also have no idea where the disc got to, not played in years...
Its awesome, better than AoE3 in my opinion :D .
-
WAY better. My fav is tutonic knights too. they are VERY good in big groups. I got Age Of Kings: The Conquerors and i've finish all the campaigns. Making my own VERY big map but if any-one knows how to do triggers, I realy need help.
-
I've never done much real mapping... I've used the map editor to make huge scale battles :)
-
Yeah. There so fun.
-
Got back into AoK lately, good fun. :)
-
I've always hated the easily spammed castles. I hated those games that when I thought I had a respectable army, I see the goddamn 5-wall defended by castles and towers. Plus, for some reason, my micro sucks, especially in AoE2. Besides from that, I still love the graphics, and the gameplay in general, right till the third age.
-
From memory, trebuchets can be spammed fairly easily as well as castles.
-
I sucked at defending them. I think I actually never spammed, I always had armies counting of 30 this-kind-of-soldier, 30 that-kind-of-soldier, and so and so forth. I couldn't abide having more than 3 trebuchets, as it wasn't historical nor nice looking.
Might be the fact that I didn't like that part of the gameplay, as I never spammed the way it had to be spammed
-
I'm the same. more than 3 or 4 trebs and it looks wrong.
-
Although you don't deny using it :P
-
I get about 30 trebs and have them constantly firing at a narrow pass. Owns. I have 30 crossbowman to get the stragglers.
-
Scenario editor? Ahhhh, I spent weeks there :P
-
I have been spending weeks there. Making your own campaign isn't easy. It's still loads of fun though. Eye candy looks good. Can't wait till I finish.
-
i have to admit that your eye candy is pretty awsome. im no good at map editing but the plpaying is pretty fun. british archers kill that castle because it doesnt have the range to fight back :P
-
There are some incredibly good scenarios out there. I got a play of Romeo and Juliet and a sort of RPG from a webpage, don't know where they could be though :P
-
I love Gwyndlegard mod. It is only one map but it talks about 3 hours to finish (that is non-stop with no breaks).
-
If you think you suck at AoE 2 than don't worry so do I... did. With this I'm now evenly matched with a hard player... almost. :) Still good though. http://www.informatics-tech.com/strategy.html
-
Played it recently with The Khan and got dominated by the older brother. Teutonic knights are painful when playing Goths and Persians :)
-
I like Persians because they get a few extra resources at the start of the game.
-
Liar! You like their elephants!
-
Woad raiders were always my favourite UU.
-
They were one of my favorites to...
Among knights, chevaliers, paladins, men-at-arms (and their upgrades) and Teutonic knights. They were all cool.
-
Teutonic knights were so slooooow though.
I did like spamming pikemen too.
-
I loved playing with Level 2 and 3 units... I hated the bland feeling of first age units (and the low variety, and their ahistorical look), and tier 4 were too uber. I used to create scenarios where I banned advancing to 4th age, and those goddamned monks. They have made me rage quit so many times, I can't recall the last time I finished a vanilla match of AoE2
-
Also, turtle ships. Turtle ships were the most amazingest awesomest things ever.
-
Tutonic knights may be slow but they can take down a castle by themselves. I don't like the Elephants at all, they're way too slow.
-
So, who has bought the HD re-release on Steam? ;D
-
I don't have steam :P
-
I might be getting it. Can't decide if it's worth £15 for a retex plus steam support for a game I already own...
-
Just asking, do any of you know how I can fix the water in my copy of the original? It's bright pink and looks an absolute mess. I imagine it's due to compatibility issues...
-
Yeah, it's probably some kind of incompatibility with new Windows versions.
Didn't check it, but you could try some of these solutions:

-
There's a thing I use that replaces the .exe. I don't know how it works but it does.
-
I love this game. First game I ever played IIRC.
Ive been stealing SotK's PC to play it on Steam of late. :P
-
Such a good game. 0AD started out as a mod team for it, you know. :)
-
I thought 0 A.D. was originally modding AoM. The more you know...
-
The core of them are from AoK I think, but certainly some are from AoM :) .
-
SotK and I have been playing this together the last few nights.
We're planning a Let's Play (series?) of it. :D
-
Awesome! Are you using the African kingdoms expac? I don't have it and just wondering if the new civs change the game at all? To me the aztecs did because they added civs with a significant penalty (no cav) but were strong in other areas and the slavs didn't really as they just added more of the same types already present in the game.
-
Looking forward to seeing the LP series, do it! :)

We don't have any of the DLC yet :(
We tried on hard mode yesterday (SotK, my brother and myself, against 3 AI's). We got demolished. xD
-
Like most RTS games, AOEII favours speed over strategy; the harder AIs just econ boom with a degree of precision and speed that's quite hard for a human to counter without a lot of practice.
-
Watch a video of what a pro does in the first 2-3 mins and it sets you up well for the rest of the game. I used to get thrashed on hard but after seeing what they do and learning how to play the beginning of a game well, I can just about take on 3 of them solo.
EDIT: RTS doesn't really do strategy (ironically, I guess), at a push total war does but even then it's low level. It's great at tactics though which arguably is the fun bit anyway.
-
Yeah, I guess what I dislike about playing RTS games is that I'd usually prefer a slower game that has more strategy in terms of resource/map control etc. I mean, I could probably learn to play them fine if I practised, but I don't really find fast-paced tactics games so fun to play compared to being able to consider my moves.
-
You ever play Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis? That sounds like it'd fit with what you want in terms of planning time and resource/map control.
Aaand this is a little off topic.....
LG, I'd recommend getting The Conquerors expansion, it really does add a lot to the game. The Forgotten, you can more or less leave forgot and it won't change anything :)
-
Clockwork - turns out I had the expansions all along, but because SotK didn't, they didn't show up in multiplayer. We've both got them now :D
-
Which factions do you guys use/prefer?
-
XD
-
I've been playing as the Celts generally - there's not really a particular reason I don't think except I've grown to be used to them xD
Though I played as the Goths earlier today - but the lack of stone walls was a problem.
-
I always played as Celts or Koreans - my phase of playing much AoE was before I was much of a Byzantinist!
-
I love playing goths! inf spam is real :D
-
Their UU is the Huskarl type thing right?
-
yeah which is take or leave tbh but the real power is being able to churn inf out faster than any other civ. Proxy 4 barracks even at late game and watch as they try and counter it :D
EDIT: And yes, goths having a Huskarl as UU is silly.
-
Well, a lot of AoE is hardly historically defensible :P
-
Truuue
I think my favourite faction to play as is the end-game greed play Turks. Alright so early game can stop you hard but if you're good at rush defence then at the imp age there's almost nobody that can stop you :D
-
Been playing as the Byzantines the last few times, because cataphracts :)
Also the 100% accuracy perk for archers.
-
Yeah that splash damage is great, and they have probably the best model.
-
I watched someone steamroll two other players using nothing but lots and lots and lots of War Wagons. It seemed to work very well.
-
Koreans are lovely. Turtle ships are the best of things :D
-
AI's have attempted to do that to us with War Wagons.
... they didn't get very far when I sent my arbalests in. :P
-
With 80+ War Wagons? I mean, almost half of his max pop was probably War Wagons, if not more. It was a War Wagon spam in the most literal use of the word. There were so many it was ridiculous!
-
Haha, I'm not sure there was 80 xD The AI (as the Spanish) have definitely done that to us with conquistadors though xD
I've just spent 4 hours finishing a multiplayer game that SotK got disconnected from. I wiped out the AI's :D
-
What difficulty?
-
It was only on moderate xD We're trying to get in better practice for our lets plays xD
-
I use to be at a stage where I could easily defend against Hard difficulty. That was before The Forgotten though, or rather before it became an expansion.
-
Yeah, I feel like playing with the expansions definitely makes it more difficult.
-
Well, playing with the expansions doesn't change anything anymore, as anything that the expansions add or change, adds and changes the base game as well, but the AI has changed since development has started again. I was meaning before they changed the AI a bit, it was slightly easier.
-
Ahh - it must be in our heads then, we thought there was a difference xD
-
Well, it depends. If you're playing it on Steam with the latest version, than in theory there shouldn't be any difference I don't think.
