Title: Italian Town Declares Independence

Okay, partly this is just kinda funny since there are only 550 people there.


But more to the point, do you think that areas of countries should be allowed to declare independence in this way? Some countries (Serbia and Russia in relation to Kosovo and Chechnya as prime examples) have long argued that countries have an inalienable right to their own "territorial integrity" and that this should come above the wishes of people in certain areas. Others would be quicker to try and sponsor independence for anywhere that wants is. What do you think?

Independence must be won, but if you succeed it's all burgers and baseball from then on baby.  8)

Well the SNP are determined to make Scotland independent if it kills us. (Which I'm inclined to think it might, but then again what do I know about economics.)

But in short no not really, I like stability a lot.

Ah, but you could argue that maintaining an area as part of a union when its population mostly don't want to be is a recipe for instability. Civil war can be an obvious result (Chechnya again being an obvious example).

Scotland's population, by a large majority, don't want independence, which makes it something of a different situation.
