Title: Bad Translator
Post by: Jubal on January 06, 2012, 05:59:59 PM
Don't know how many of you have come across this before but here it is:

http://www.ackuna.com/badtranslator

It shows just how bad web translators are by taking languages in a random order, translating to them then back to English.

So for example, with 36 translations:

"Don't forget to be awesome!" -> "Remember my name."
"They may take our lives, but they will never take our freedom!" -> "Life for me, but not the game!"
"Discretion is the better part of valour." -> "In the report."
"He has all the virtues I dislike, and none of the vices I admire." -> "As a facilitator of weakness. "
"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." -> "These experiments two blocks to Beach attack? Click the tab for the Arena to see the Bildirimizde escaped."

Post any funny ones you find. :)

Original text:
"I seem to spot an immensely huge toothpick coming out of your mouth"

...10 translations later Bing gives us:
"It seems a very wide mouth, a toothpick"

Original text:
"Don't mess with me and my 10 barreled goat flinger"

...20 translations later Bing gives us:
"I and act upon the threshold of goats"

Original text:
"Science is facts; just as houses are made of stones, so is science made of facts; but a pile of stones is not a house and a collection of facts is not necessarily science."                                                                   -Henri Poincare (1854 - 1912)

...20 translations later Bing gives us:
"Do some research. The length of the body, but many parts for stone is the fact that a scientific, not necessarily scientific community the facts."

With my last try, I am starting to doubt about educational books that have been translated from other languages.

"The moment you cheat for the sake of beauty, you know you're an artist." ~ David Hockney
"Abdul Qader Bajammal invited artists"

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled." ~ Plutarch
"To help the firefighters."

"Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." ~ Lincoln
"The call of the shadows, the shadows."

"Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves." ~ Einstein
"It's easy to become the will of the people."

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest." ~ Confucius

I love how complex and thoughtful sentences turn into just gibberish... usually having chinese or any character-based language in one of the translations does help a lot (I remember fooling around with google translate a lot)

"I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion. The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
"Sometimes I'm the one or the other, sometimes Fox Government secret exodus."

"I love power. But it is as an artist that I love it. I love it as a musician loves his violin, to draw out its sounds and chords and harmonies." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
"Your dog might make good music, a violin, for example, the harmonious balance."

"Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas." ~ Henry Ford
"Mayor of main character in the dough of enthusiasm. Fiery flashes. Start the wave theory and performance."

"I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." ~Don Vito Corleone
"The default value is invalid."

"Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherportugaling snakes on this motherportugaling plane!" ~Snakes on a Plane
"Here are some benborikan from hell."

But anyway, the problem with electronic translators is that they cannot account for the phrasing that occurs in languages. Very little is directly translatable; there are only equivalents to what the speaker intends to convey.

My topic today... Sun Tzu!

Original text:
"It is the rule in war, if ten times the enemy's strength, surround them; if five times, attack them; if double, be able to divide them; if equal, engage them; if fewer, be able to evade them; if weaker, be able to avoid them."

...30 translations later Bing gives us:
"Al-Qaeda network, a game that If 10 times. During the nearly five times or repeated entries in the same or less light."

(I'll continue this later... for some reason the translator stopped working for me :P )
