I do declare that the Television series known as 'Star Trek' is quite possibly the greatest to grace our screens in the history of entertainment.

Except Enterprise... we'll ignore that.

Much merriment was had when channels began to regale the nation with the tales of the starships Enterprise and Voyager; as well as the Dominion War and the ethereal happenings around DS9. Hark, I still possess fond memories of seeing one of the most beloved and longest running franchises in history.

I hope also that one day, someone may dust off the scriptures and write new episodes, because I WANT MORE STAR TREKZZZ!!!

I can't decide if I love or hate Star Trek: Nemesis.

That is the question.

There are so many things I would change to make it fit with the rest of the series, but oh well. :(

Now that I think of it, John Logan really screwed that one up.

These are the reasons why:

-    Use of an alien race (Remans) never before featured on Star Trek

It's an okay-ish movie, but a terrible series finale.

All excellent and valid points.

I would have used Romulans, but the main psycho-antagonist would have been Sela, and the bad-turned-good who would have helped the Federation in the end would have been Tomalak, because that would have been an awesome turn for such a character.

Too many other things to list here

- BUT -

At the Troi's wedding we see Wesley in a Starfleet uniform when we know for a fact he didn't choose that route and went off with the Traveler. The only time we saw Wesley continuing in Starfleet was the episode Parallels in one of the alternate universe's that Worf passed through. So the conclusion that I'm sticking to is that the movie ST: Nemesis took place in that universe due to Wesley's appearance much like the new Trek's take place in an alternate universe created by Nero. :)

The soundtrack is flawless, though.

And the effects are pretty neat.
Which is nice, since the effects in reboot movies (yuck) seem too theatrical and seriously overdone.

Did you also notice in the movies that every time Troi takes the helm they crash the ship? :P

I was really sad when Enterprise D went down. Enterprise E was cool, but the Galaxy class felt like home.

Amen to that brotha.

Putting aside the emotional attachment because of the whole series, maybe it's because of the interior.

The Galaxy class had comfortable, friendly interior, curved lines, lots of free space and felt like a "luxurious" ship.
The Sovereign class was dark and sort of crowded. It was a battleship, really. Both inside and out.

Understandable why Starfleet went that route though, what with the Borg and the Dominion about. We just have to trust that they went back to carpeted exploration ships after all that.

Ugh, thinking about that... I hate carpets (dust dispensers feels like a more proper term).

Some of you guys should be interested in that because it's all legal and technical and philosophical and wut.

Fans of a thing are cool and whatnot but I don't understand that level of obsessiveness. Same with LotR or GoT or whatever.

I dunno, I think con-langs can be quite interesting to look at and study from an academic perspective, and they can be kind of fun to use for odds and ends of communication, it definitely adds an extra layer of depth to a setting to have a language that's well crafted for it. How people communicate says a lot about how they see the world, I guess, and that applies to well crafted fantasy peoples as much as real world ones. Things like raising a kid with Klingon as a main language are rather beyond the mark though IMO.

I don't understand how they can sue them for using it in a non profit fan film. Unless I missed something. I didn't read the article after all. :P

I mean technically non-profit fan films are basically illegal for most of this stuff, on the grounds that even if you're not selling it, you're hurting their profit margins. Which is frankly rubbish, and we should definitely reform copyright law to decrease the amount of this nonsense, but even so.

The language stuff is a sideshow to the main case; it's just one of a whole list of things that the copyright holders claimed were theirs and thus in breach of copyright (some sensible, like the characters, others pretty silly, they're also claiming copyright over the shape of Vulcan ears). But it's an unusual one in legal terms, because it's basically never been legally tested whether someone can in fact own a language. If they rule that the holders can in fact own Klingon, that means hypothetically that any speech or writing in Klingon breaches their copyright, and there's enough of that now that it's a big legal area potentially.

All just a money thing, like always.

I won't get into whether or not you can own fictitious language or not because I'm pretty sure that's clear cut. But what I will say is that I think why they're pursuing the infringement is actually mostly to do with how USA copyright/trademark laws operate. To hold onto one I think you have to make efforts to keep others from using it. If you don't do that then I think further cases can be made along the line that the owner of the copyright isn't licensing it but it is being used so has to relinquish the copyright.


Also this is sort of why you get 'silly' claims like the shape of Vulcan ears. If someone else trademarks it then Star Trek has to change it or pay royalties.


So basically, I don't think it's a money issue at all actually, I think it's an ownership one. Whoever owns Star Trek doesn't need any money, at all.

The UK has a similar copyright control system, and yes, both need changing badly.

I suspect that owning Klingon is actually very complex indeed; if a company can create and own grammar rules on the one hand that's potentially a ridiculous amount of power. If on the other hand a company can't own things like the Klingon letter shapes, that's a huge erosion of things like the ability to copyright logos etc. There's so many elements in the language that I think it could be very legally murky.

You can't copyright grammar but the shape of the hieroglyphics or whatever they are you'd have be able to.

Aye, though how exactly could be pretty crucial. Like I'm fairly sure you can copyright a font, but the underlying letter forms you can't, and if Klingon is ruled to be an active language then it would make sense if the same applied here.

to be fair its basically stopping people from making cheap clones and such of their product and also making sure that the rewards and profit mostly flow into the hands of the people that worked to create it, kind of similar to anti-piracy regulations in that sense.

I don't particularly see that it's a big deal. With most relationships in books/films, the only real question is whether they're written well and fit into the story; if so, they work, if not, they don't, simples.

I guess I also feel like people get really upset about cheap throwaway character features to draw in, say, the LGBT community, but don't get nearly as upset by for example when there are pointless sex appeal characters for straight men added or other things that have no plot relevance but appeal to other specific audiences. It's not as if anyone has any artistic high ground in these arguments; any character feature more or less can be done well or done badly.

I've seen people i find more attractive in the local area. Although i think generally you are right. It seems they use popular actors and actresses to draw in tickets rather than to contribute to the story.

It's just George Takei, who you would think would take the LGBT side no matter what, thinks it's a cheap move and a cheap move against an established character.

Well he's entitled to his opinion but he doesn't dictate anyone else's. I just say let the folks get on with it and then judge it on whether it works on screen not what sort of relationship it is.

On the one hand he wasn't particularly known for his sexuality anyway. Otoh saying it before the movie comes out like it's a big deal is attention whoring. Otooh, probably won't have any effect on the movie so I don't particularly care.

God, I adore Star Trek but I must confess, I've only ever seen the Original Series and the newer movies set in the alternate timeline. I could never bring myself to let go of the TOS crew because I became massively attached to them haha

Just watched a TNG episode last night for the first time in ages. I've seen the new series and some TOS in the meantime, but it made me ludicrously happy for some reason.

I was about to argue then saying that they did try and move forwards (enterprise, discovery & the movies) but realised they are all set before TNG so you're right.
