OK, so Matt Smith is leaving, we get a new one, but who?
Personally hoping for older, don't want some babyfaced whizzkid again. Ben Daniels has been mentioned and I think I could get behind that. Sean Pertwee also a possibility. A number of black actors are in the running too, which would be a big change to the look. Hope they don't make the Doctor a woman though; I very much want more characterful women in the series but actually I think the Doctor's gender should probably be one of the constants of the character.
Also I want Moffat's job.

It's time.

But it needs to be official!
But yes, I agree that an older Doctor would be better and not female (it'd be weird). I think the Doctor is a male Time Lord.
And companion-wise we seriously need a companion with brains and who isn't quite so useless. Making out is not required and is, quite frankly, weird. I don't see why the Doctor needs to be romatically involved with anyone.
As a different shout, Bill Nighy could be a good older actor call for it?

Also, I want to see the return of Bellal the Exxilon (or one of his species) as a companion;

I'm not sure about Bill Nighy. His roles are quite often the same (or similar) character and I can't see him breaking out of it. They'll also go for someone who'll appeal to America - possibly a reason to go for Hugh Laurie, as you suggested Jubal.
I really dislike the House character, but I know that's not Hugh Laurie's fault. I'm sure he would be more likable as The Doctor if that was the case.
I'm just curious to see how this John Hurt thing plays out.
On a side note I quite liked Christopher Eccleston and thought it rather humorous when I remembered he was the bad guy in Gone in Sixty Seconds. :)
I think Laurie could be a very good Doctor, but after House he's going to be charging insane fees I presume.
The best thing might be to pull in someone really not very heard of, and/or a stage actor.
I think not very much the head of is the right idea. When Matt Smith turned up I was the only person in my entire friendship group who knew who he was and that was only because he played Jim in Ruby in the Smoke.
Who has been good in semi-major roles in recent BBC series, friends?
I remember my english teacher told us she knew him from uni. But I don't know whether he was a decent Dr because I don't watch it. So I'm not bothered who they choose. But someone mildly mental would be good.
I know mates of Matt Smith, he still has a group of drinking buddies down in Northants. I didn't like him all that much personally.
I'd say Martin Freeman could probably do it and Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock was pretty decent and it's basically the same character.
Freeman isn't mad enough in all his character I've seen, and Cumberbatch... it's possible but I don't like the idea personally. The more I think about it the more I want someone who isn't too iconic from somewhere else.
I think he could be if given enough reign to do it.
Maybe JJ from skins, though perhaps same problem...And his acting skills. Heath Ledger would have been a sound choice, bit late for that now though.
Lenny Henry for the doctor. Can this combination be beaten? Perhaps. Perhaps even easily.
Is cumberbatch Smaug?
Scarlet and I have concluded that Stephen Mangan would be AMAZING as the Doctor. I don't think he'll get it, but it would be the best of all the things ever ever ever.
I'm still going with Rowan.
Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor would be incredible. However, I personally hope that Boris Johnson decides to start an acting career between now and Christmas.

The new Doctor riding into battle as Daleks attack a woman in the street!
@penty: yes he is
@othko: Have you heard Eddie Izzard is planning to run against him in the next mayoral elections?
No I hadn't. This will be an election to remember.
David Thewlis (Lupin from Harry Potter), or....Alan Rickman. That would be great.
Izzard as the next London Mayor? Well as that picture shows, stranger things have happened...
What does everyone think of 12's casting?
I'm thrilled, personally. He's a fantastic actor. :D
Rob, I agree, David Thewlis would have been brilliant also. :)
Excited. But slightly wary as with every casting.
Jubal and I decided he'd probably be pretty good an then proceeded to have a long conversation about potential costumes instead :P
Dare I find out who it is or let myself be surprised?
You can choose, you may not know who he is.. I don't know if he's well known outside of the UK.
It's a long time to wait. I'm sure I'll accidentally find out somehow. :P
Don't open if you don't want to know who the next doctor is (in which case, why the hell are you looking at this thread?).

Dammit, facebook. :P
Now here comes The Question.
Who's your favorite Doctor?
Three (Jon Pertwee) :)
With David Tennant and Tom Baker probably closest behind him.
They say it's usually the first one you see.
Well, not for me. ;D
The first on I saw Christopher Eccleston.
But my favorite Doctor is Matt Smith.
David Tennant as my second favorite.
The Doctor - Tom Baker.
Astonishing.
Our answers are so different.
Also, Amy Pond. <3
The Pond girl was great.. And then she quickly got really really annoying.
It's all about Rory :P
And Clara xD
Amy? Annoying?
No way. She just got cuter. :P
A mad man and a redhead are the best possible combination.
She was kind of a better looking version of Donna. :P
All the Clara. <3
Image Jim Carry and the Doctor... just think about it. ;D
Smite me, oh mighty smiter!
Here's a fun fact.
The episode with vampires in Venice was filmed on Trogir town square in Croatia.
I think it will be Peter Capaldi.
