After some recent discussion around the site, I though it would be good idea to get a thread up where people could say whether there are any courses they might be interested/willing/blackmailed into running for/taking at the Academy.
So, things to discuss/state on this thread:
- What subjects do you know about that might lend itself to being taught in the Academy?
- Would you like to run a course on it? [OF COURSE YOU WOULD!]
- How much time do you think you might have for putting into this course? And when might this be?
- Which of the courses suggested would you be interested in taking?
- Which of the courses not yet suggested would you be interested in taking? :D
Also, if you know someone else on this site is good at something but they might not think of it, do suggest too.. Either here, or possibly to them separately so they don't feel pressured to volunteer.
[Of course, Jubal has already made a thread like this, but since I'm practically stealing his job by writing this, who cares! Write on this thread, write on the other.. doesn't matter all the much to me :)]
I shall make a list!

Anyone interested? :)
I would like to run a course, but I have no ideas :/ But I would happily enrol in almost any course possible
For example:
I could conceivably do courses on:
- Cloak making/other assorted sewing
- Some maths and stuff (just finished first year Natural Sciences maths)
- Some first year geology
- Ceilidh dancing/calling
I would be willing to do this.
I can put in a fair amount of time over the summer, less time when I'm at university but can probably still manage (Procrastination!).
I would be interested in taking some of the courses both suggested and not suggested :)
I think the trick generally will be to produce plenty of information and ensure that you'll be able to give people feedback in a fairly succinct and not that time consumptive way. :) I do think that feedback and teaching is quite necessary though, that's the main thing that makes this more than "a bunch of crap someone wrote on the internet."
I'll probably focus on World Building for the reboot; it was more popular and less time consuming and more fun.
I'll use my 2000th post to say that I'll be willing to run a course on programming in C++, in around about September, with details to be finalised later :) .
I was thinking of running like baking? Or Cosplay? :)
Adding you in.. :)
Maybe you should post about that in a special place so you can get some triumph points for it :P
I was doing that as you posted :P
Cosplay has my vote. ;D
My name be not comrade_general!
I know :D Why would you think it was? 0:)
(I'm sorry, I'm tired? :/)
Interested in C++ and maths and stuff courses.
I would be interested in the World Building reboot :)
Ceilidhing, baking, C++, and geology would all be of interest to me.
And so would all the rest tbh. :P
Sewing would really interest me... because... (secret o'clock)
I love the Disney movie 'Tangled' and I want to try making a replica of Rapunzel's dress (maybe) :P
*hides away from the guilty pleasure of Disney movies*
Its really not that bad as far as guilty pleasures go. Enjoying the taste of roast babies, thats what I'd call a guilty pleasure.
I concur. :)
CG - You concur it's not a guilty pleasure or that you want to make a Rapunzel dress?
MoD - Do it! I made an elf dress when I was 15. I must still have the pattern somewhere.. Combining that with the gypsy costume pattern I have might well work. Though I altered that one, I should be able to reconstruct it. All of the fun!
Also, interested in baking definitely and C++ possibly (depending on how basic it is - I know nothing, despite my lack of barcelonian heritage). To be honest, all the stuff you can throw at me. I shall learn it all! Maybe..
I am very tempted to... I looked online for ideas, and one had a lot of elaborate embroidery... it was the most accurate, but as i'm not as good as I wish I was, it wouldn't matter to me if that wasn't there/as elaborate. I already bought a long blonde wig to be Daenerys last halloween, (even if it is a bit too light) but that wouldn't matter too much either, because i'd plait it and decorate it with flowers if i was turning in into a cosplay :')
The two patterns are Simplicity 0501

and McCall's M5497

Though I, to some extent, ended up ignoring the patterns..
Good..? (I'll try to help with or without an academy course if you want/ I can)
(I apologise to the rest of the thread for hijacking it for my own sewing geek-out purposes)

CG - You concur it's not a guilty pleasure or that you want to make a Rapunzel dress?
Yes. ;D
Those are lovely, thank you :)
I think i'd try and base it on first dress, (the skirt and top part, but make shorter/more fitted sleeves) and add the corset/bodice part of the second one? Maybe?
Also, I wish i'd have been capable of making an elf dress aged 15 :O that's amazing :)
That, CG, is infuriatingly noncommittal :P
Yeah, well the bodice is in fact a separate piece in the second pattern (like a waistcoat) but I'm pretty sure you could just make the from part of it and sew it into the seams of the first dress when you sew it up to incorporate it. I shall try to find my information on making puff sleeves.. I'm fairly sure it's quite straightforward.
It's really not that great, no overlocker :/ (Still no overlocker in fact) Also, the neckline is slightly too wide. I'm not doing a very good job of convincing me you want to learn from me, am I? :P
It'll still be far better than I can do i'm sure :P
Don't be so sure :P
CG reminded me of something else I know an embarrassing amount about. I can teach people about etiquette.
I'm giving off a really weird impression here..
:O really? Because I've been looking for a good book on etiquette for ages and not found one... :D
I'll take that as interest? :P
These are the people you want to go to.
http://www.debretts.com/
They do books. Also the National Trust does a good series that I am slowly collecting all of :P
Ooh, I might invest in some of those books :P
and yep, interest :D
Etiquette would be a good one to do. Possibly have something about the history/development of such as a feature of it to explain why all the amusing rules? :P
Amusing?! AMUSING?! How dare you :P
There are reasons I don't self-identify as Lawful in the D&D alignment system. :P
Yeah fudge the system! Anarchy in the Exilian!
Oh and I think that Captain Carthage should do a course on courting.
I'd be interested in World Building! :)
Noted :)
Do you think you can add some explanations for the courses?
EDIT: Please? ;D
No.
Huh? Why not?
There is no why, there just is.
There is now a details section of the table, if you want to give descriptions then please write them :)
If you want to get a description of a course then poke the person to write one :P
Etiquette's on the table ^_^ how I missed that being added I don't know... xD
I would like to announce interest in the first half of the table.
Excellente :) Updated.
We should start thinking about running these..
Arghyespanicthat'sprobablymyjobisn'tit
Put me down for everything. :)
I forgot Saw is doing C++. I actually studied C# in college, not like I remember any of it thought. :P
Possibly, but you can delegate surely. Don't panic :)
Putting..

Ceilidhing, baking, C++, and geology would all be of interest to me.
This, basically.
If there were interest (and I can remember my A-level latin) I could do an intro to Latin...
I would be interested in a Latin introduction certainly.
I think a few tutorials on drawing would be good to arrange, i suggest someone like SilverWolf, The Khan or *cough* myself to run these. I don't think id be very suited to a teaching role though and we'd most likely need to have a few requests on specific things which a certain person/peoples would like to learn how to draw. Of course there'd also probably be an introductory thing explaining how to properly shade and get simple objects like vase' or something to look good. I'm also imagining that there are a lot of different levels which people are drawing at so yeah i don't know.
I'm just throwing this out there, although of course i don't know if i, personally , would have the time and discipline to do this. Just a thought :) .
Okay friends, we now have a list of many potential courses. We should be more proactive about this.
People running courses
Here is information on creating and running a course:
http://www.exilian.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2092.0
Here is an FAQ thingy:
http://www.exilian.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2090.0
I started sort of vaguely planning a geology course today. I know joek found some stuff which means he can run the Latin course.
People not running courses
Is there a particular course you'd like to see get off the ground? Why don't you encourage/ offer to help the person offering to run that course? Alternatively, make lots of noise about how awesome that course (and others) would be.
Do things! Be productive! Please..? I'll give you triumph points? :P
Do PM me for advice on designing your course or how many credits it should offer, etc. :)
When I've finished writing up my project, C++ will become a reality :) .
You mean that C++ is currently a lie? :O
No, just that I haven't started planning it yet :P .
Hmm, sign me up for the "Interested" row for drawing as well pease. ;D
Signed :)
I don't think i'd have any time to run those drawing tutorials by the way, perhaps someone else could do it?
I'm also interested in the Ceilidh dancing/calling :D
Sign me up for Geology, the "Maths and Stuff", Latin, World Building and C++.
Also I finally have an idea! I can do Statistics!
Can someone else modify that in? It won't work properly on my phone.
Updated my course, but forgot to put me in the interested bit for others :P
Don't know who that was, but I have now updated it.
Any time something new is added I am automatically interested in it. ;)
Quick! Someone offer to do a really embarrassing course :P
So, when do people feel it would be a good idea for our grand reopening? :D
I'm not sure. I think we need to get a series of people to write some courses and get Jubal (or someone he delegates to) to look through and once we have two or three to run we can re open? What do others think?
Sounds good to me :) .
How close are you to being able to run C++, SOTK? Ditto Scarlet with whichever of yours would be easiest to do.
I can get World Building going without too much more work I think maybe. :s
If we can get MoD back and she could run cosplay or something then we'd have a fairly rounded starting portfolio.
I'll have to start writing then it seems :P
Go go go! :P
I will be able to run it soon, my project is out of the way now. MoD is very busy with work but it finishes for half term soon and then she will be less run down.
Out of interest/to help me decide how in-depth to go, what is the extent of existing programming knowledge amongst the people interested in c++?
I had a few courses in C# about 5 years ago. :P
I used to be pretty good at JavaScript and I can do basic python-y stuff. :)
Pretty good with python and also proficient VB6
Hello :)
I'm really sorry to change this... is it possible that my baking course could become a sort or baking/home economics/craft course? I'd love to do some cosplay eventually, but as it's quite time consuming (less so than baking and crafts etc.) :/ Scarlet's sewing course is sort of similar though, and i'm certain she's far more adept than me at this kind of thing anyway :P
I'd like to be able to do things for my course using the Youtube channel, if that's possible also, like tutorials? :)
Sure; right now I don't care a great deal what sort of courses we offer, I'd just like to get some running! :P
And yes, of course. We could even set up an extra channel for the academy?
I think an extra channel would be a good idea :) Especially if there are a few courses running from it :)
I sent a course outline thingy to you Jubal, awaiting your approval before I start off on it :D .
I am currently creating a similar outline :P.
How many other people are ready to start their course then? I feel like a few starting at once would be better as a relaunch type event rather than me starting alone.
I think Othko's not far off?
I can start world-building again, I've still got to produce a lot more material though.
I'd love to do something plant based (or just general biology - though I know less about that) but 3rd year is devouring my time so I don't think I can run a full course. Perhaps we could have something similar to this where there's a Q&A style format? That I could potentially do
Yeah, a sort of "ask an expert" section? That could work. :)
Quote from: Jubal on December 08, 2013, 12:06:09 PM
Yeah, a sort of "ask an expert" section? That could work. :)
Yeah, though I'd hesitate about taking the title of expert!
People interested in my C++ course, take a look here! (http://exilian.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=166.0)
I'd be most interested in the World-Building reboot. ;)
I'd also consider co-running it if Jub needed a hand. Or, perhaps guest-speaker or some armadillo. I don't know, I'd like to try and run something but I don't know how to do anything very well. :P
...Not sure if this is late or not (Assuming not by the previous post(s)), but If this is still going on I think I'd like the following: Maths, Geology, Stats, World Building, C++, Etiquette, Latin, and Drawing. Not sure if they all fit, but I figure if I'm going to learn, I will learn ALL the things! Going for "Renaissance Man" status, heh.
...On a related note, I could toss out some Java-related courses if anyone is interested. If not, I have a random smattering of videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/ImperatorRyan (Shameless self-plug, heh). Anyways, hope this continues. Certainly seems worth a shot. Again, I still have no idea if it's been dropped, due to my not being around in the past year or so.
-Enjoy,
Ryan
The Exilian Academy was sort of a failed experiment really. It never really lived all that much. It had a short life.
:( it might not be gone yet! :P My 'course' is now going to be just baking tutorials though .
Shame, because I've always wanted etiquette lessons :/
I'm committed to rebooting this at some point, but it probably means someone who isn't me would need to take charge and organise the whole thing.
Hmm, I'd consider doing that, but I don't have a good track record in terms of staying at tasks. :(
Let me get a job first. If I still feel I can do this once I have that sorted, I'll be happy to organise it. I probably won't run any courses though. I know nothing well enough to teach it.
The Stats Course I'm running has got a few lessons done, I just seem to be incessantly busy at the moment.
AS stats?
Yeah, but it might extend to A2 and possibly S3, as it seems to help me in revision a little :P
I'm not taking further so S2 is as far as I'm going to go unless I self teach myself some stuff. I think your tutorials might be good for that :)
I'm intending on self-teaching S3, M3 and FP3, possibly more if I can find the time :P
Yeah, one of my mates is too. What degree do you want to do? Physics?
Maths! This sadly means that my next year will be a hell of preparing for STEP papers, and the following three (or four) more intense still.
Yeah, that will be interesting :/ thank god for biological natural sciences :)
Agreed.
In other news, I have 3 lessons of my course fully typed up, although I would prefer to do more before I actually start it :P I believe SotK has got a lot of his C++ one done.
OK, I know Othko is around and probably has time (maybe?), but does anyone else who was interested in my C++ course? If so, when would people want me to start (after the last time I tried and only Othko from the interested folk list showed up :P )?
Who would be interested in a painting course? The first course would be a simple landscape but would require the students to have a few supplies.
I think I'd be interested in some sort of basic Python course focusing on how to build graphical applications. That is to say I'm relatively familiar with how to think about procedural flow of a program (although not in Python) but I've no idea where to start when it comes to doing anything outside of the command line. I'd like to be able to put something together that would have a clickable UI, essentially.
SOTK can do more advanced stuff than me there, but I'd be happy to run a mini course on using tkinter which is the most basic of the python UI packages.
I'm happy to do a small course for Pygame if that will be useful, but it somewhat depends on what your use-case is as to which of that or tkinter would be more useful.
I was thinking of attempting to build a date converter for the Warhammer 40,000 Imperial Dating System in Python. I'm not sure how to provide an input form. That is to say how to think about menus.
That sounds like Tkinter would be more useful. I could learn PyQt, but I would rather just do a simple tutorial or two for that rather than a whole Academy course.
With any luck that'd help a great deal :D
ANYONE INTERESTED IN RUNNING A COURSE SHOULD MESSAGE ME ASAP OKAY THANKS AWESOME.
*cough*
Apologies for the caps, but it's super important!
So I've had an idea. Would there be interest in a sort of 'journal club' like set up? Say if a piece of research hits the news, or someone stumbles across a paper and they're not sure what to make of it, or want to discuss the ideas it brings up, then they could bring it there for community discussion?
The only issue I can see is the problem of pay walls to access some journals. But there are quite a few that are open access, or that I'm sure at least of few of us here will have access to in order to comment on it.
I'd be interested in this, absolutely :) Though of course we'll have something of a gap in skillsets given our very broad range of disciplines.
I've messaged you about the journal club.
I'd definitely be interested, always looking to expand my academic horizons! And I guess you could stipulate that free versions of the paper must be available... Though Google Scholar has never failed me on that front.
As Lizard has expressed interest in running a C++ course, and I've not actually done much with it in over a year, would anyone be interested if I ran a Python course instead?
Whoops, didn't mean to step on any toes! Just didn't seem like you were doing much with it, so... :P
But yes, Python. Do it. Doooo iiiiit.
If Lizard is willing to take up the C++ front, then by all means, a Python course would be much appreciated, Sir King. :) I don't think it matters who does it, as much as it gets done, giving the community the resources to learn and grow.
Just my two humble cents,
Jeff :orc:
I'm trying to take CS50 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CS50) through edX at the moment and they seem keen on C. If I survive I'm thinking that Python will be a friendly face compared to C!
So we want a C or C++ course, yes?
