This is almost completely my fault because I play with a special ruling.  Every time my character is knocked out by a blow I feel could cause death, I roll a dice.  On a 1-3 the character is dead, while on a 4+ he survives. 

Anyway, Lord Balian Black Bear, my Swadian character from almost a year ago, defender of the weak, purger of the unclean, decided to help a dirty Vaegir caravan that was under attack by some Nords.  Mounted upon his trusty Charger, he smashed alone into the fray, hacking left and right with his bastard sword, splitting skulls and sending the Nords flying in all directions.  As the last of the Nordic infantry was fleeing the field, 4 arrows flew down from the night sky, sending Lord Balian pitching from his saddle.  The dice clattered to a stop on a one.  Lord Balian had been killed by 4 arrows in the back from the very people he risked his life to defend. 

So now I'm gonna get my own back on those Vaegir bastards.  I'm going to start a Halrond character on my mod and show them real archery dammit.

In fact I don't think it is - the pugn- root is Latin and involves fighting. Something that's "repugnant" is literally something that fights back, according to the etymology. So being pugnant (or as the actual English word from the root is, pugnacious) is being fighty, basically.

I think the issue here is that re-, whilst it denotes doing something back, isn't in itself a negative marker. This one is from latin pellere, to drive - something repulsive repels, it drives you backwards. Whereas something pulsive drives you forwards (hence the modern word pulse).
