I doubt we'll become completely obsolete - the AIs will probably decide that humans are fun things to have around the place.
I mean, as a species I think we like seeing how far we can push ourselves - the 100m sprint didn't become obsolete after the invention of the sports car, for example.

Actually, they've already stated that this is their intention, to keep us in a "people zoo".

I'm thinking more of the Minds in Iain Banks' Culture - I got the impression that they could have got on perfectly well without the humans, but they kept them around because it made life more interesting. Maybe pets rather than a zoo?
