Yea.. it's a shame the right-wingers, xenophobes and whatnot have all adopted St George's flag. I rather like it, but I think it's sadly become a symbol of parties like the BNP who are just evil racist thugs.
grr, I hate when Jubal does something like this. He made this thread splitting just so I would have to edit my post.
Thread split is our friend.
I am from a little country. You brits might know it. We opened up a can of whoopass on you guys at Yorktown.
AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH BOYZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey. On the crotia shaped croatian flag does anyone else see the woman? Along the coast it the grey and white areas kinda make a woman...weird.
You wouldn't exist if not for us. :P
Anyway, I must say that the War of Independence would have been one I would have supported methinks. The generation of Washington, Jefferson, etc. Created some of the most enlightened thinking of any governments anywhere, up to this day.
Jefferson just regurgitated Locke. I guess changing one word makes all the difference. If you ever get the chance read Captives by Linda Colley. She explains the divide that emerged between the British in England and those in America. Its facinating tracing the steps to independence. Also, did you see the croatian flag woman?
Nope, can't see her at all.
USA.
I am one of those bloody Americans. Though my heritage is strongly swedish and Native American
here's an interesting ethnic cocktail for you. Polish, Irish, Blackfoot, Cherokee, a little Scottish and a few other things. Mix em together and you get me. Also, Jubal you really need to look harder. She is there and looks like the cartton wife of roger rabbit.
I'm 1/4 scots, and the rest is basically just English peasantry AFAIK.
1/2 norfolk
part northern / scottish
and part romanian gypsy :D
1/2 English
1/2 Turkish
1/16 Russian
But those don't add to 1...
HE'S A MUTANT! :ninja:
right... Ok. I'm still stunned no one can see the cartoon vixen on that map/flag of croatia. Seriously she is THERE!!!!! :ouch:
Edit: Also, my father's family has been in the States since 1642 or something rediculous like that, my mother's grandfather was the only person to make it out of his Polish village as Hitler rolled through. Interesting history right.

It's just your imagination ... Or it's time to take medicine :D
no hes on to something i can see her or im just as crazy
i can see her too.... god help me.....
In other news, i'm fully English and am not sure whether to be proud!....
Britain for me, on my dad's side, they're all brummies, on my mum's sides, they were blacksmiths from most likely Norfolk or Kent, don't know which.
Figured I'd revive this because Khan didn't, but I'm South Australian and I'm proud of it. :D
I also have strong Irish heritage on both sides. ;)
Well, for at least last 5 generations my family lived in Croatia although the origin of my surname(kohon) is argentinian(hope that's how you say that it's from argentina).
And I'm also 1/4 bosnian ;)
Presumably therefore you must have some Spanish ancestry too, via Argentina?
I have some possible Czech and Spanish ancestry.
English through and through, with a very Lancashire influence on my Mother's side.
All American, bitches. Yeah! 8)

Ye, probably, I never realy bothered with finding the origins but a bit of googling only found ppl with same surname that live in Argentina

Which is like being British, really, but with a worse accent. :P
I just found out my older sis did a bit of research on our last name and it turns out it's jewish with origins in Ukraine, Poland, Russia and Romania but most of jews with with that name migrated to Argentina and the states. Guess my family was left behind...

But we have more straight-up German blood. ;)
Anyone say Germany?
Yeah, I'm half-nazi *autoritarian*
Honestly, I haven't really figured out much about my heritage... I just know I'm 50% chilean and 50 % german :P I believe my last name comes from the Dusseldorf area though.
@Ash, being a neighbour from Argentinians, I can't recall ever hearing that name :P might be due to me not knowing many argentinians, but "kohon" doesn't sound very latin, to be honest :P
I am half English and half German :P
And all cute. :D
So how far do you guys think you have to be from your heritage to be considered something else? For instance, my grandparents on my mother's side were both born in Ireland but grew up in Australia. They consider themselves Australian, however my mother claims Irish descent as do I. Would you guys say that my children could in good conscience? How about grandchildren? How far could it go before it's just not worth it and the heritage is bred out of you?
@debux
Did yo miss the post where I explain that it's actualy jewish last name from eastern europe even though most jews with that last name migrated to Argentina and the states.

Like I say I am all-American. ;)
As far as I know, if 1/4 of your bloodline belongs to an ethnic group you can make that your ethnicity. So if you have 4 grandparents from 4 different ethnic groups you can choose any of them. At least that's what I learned from sociology.
Quote from: Ashanorath on August 08, 2012, 10:23:47 PM
from sociology.
Or politics.
The boring stuff anyway...
Long Live Science! May the scientific method be with you! May the ground you walk quake as you pass! (the last part was unneeded, but cool)
Dunno, that sounds like sociology to me, but I might be wrong.
Well for example, we'll put myself down and see what you think.
My grandparents on me mother's side were both born in Ireland but grew up in Australia. Their parents were all Irish except my grandfather's father who was English.
My grandmother on me father's side is half Irish, half Scot while me grandfather was half English, half Scot. Does that mean I can claim English and/or Scottish descent too? Or is that too far back to matter?
I hope you all realise that I'm only asking for the sake of conversation. Exilian's too quite these days. :(
I would say you can claim descent from any one of those. After all, you descended from those people right? ;)
Yes, Exilian is quiet these days. :|
Pretty sure you could, but your grandparent has to claim Scottish/English descent 1st.
I used to play an mmorpg with a guy from SAR who still claims his Dutch descent (family tradition of some sort)
So in that case Ash, what would happen if say my grandparents didn't claim it, but my parents do on their behalf? Would that be considered wrong, especially if I compounded it?
I don't know why I'm bothering but at least there's discussion. :P
Well, I'm pretty sure that your parents can claim it without doing anything wrong cause they have 1 grandparent who was english/scottish and you can claim it through them. After all, if they claim it you'd be 1/2 english/scottish.
descendant of romanian gypsies
Why hasn't Khan posted here yet?....

Jodan=Head
Joodan= Body
Geydan= Lower Body

And I can do a bit more, if you like.
(and yes, I do do martial arts)
Hmm, I'm familiar with most of those word. Mostly from anime and one snes game whose name I forgot.
I can speak Japanese too:
Mitsu bishi, cap-com fuji suzuki. Sony yashimoto hon-da yamaha! Toyota.
I can also speak Chinese:
Chow mein, egg foo young, sesame chicken, chop suey, wonton soup...
Lawl. I can copy words from Korean dictionary.
:/...god you are good cg.
I just know a lot of Japanese because I do martial arts.
I know a bunch of judo terms, can't translate any of their literal meanings though.
I used to "do" judo, but the fact that it was 11 years ago has made me forget all the words :P
A bit of Latin because I went to an old fashioned Catholic school when I was young. And I really liked dinosaurs. :P
A bit of Polish thanks to a friend. A little bit of Afrikaans which I've forgotten thanks to a different friend.
A bit Irish Gaelic because I wanted to write the dialogue for a story in it.
All the French and Spanish I needed for fencing. :P And I had both languages for classes in primary school.
K, let's see. A bit of latin that I had to learn in highschool and some anatomy I learned when I was bored. Some german, we studied it at highschool but I wasn't realy interested so I only know a litle. Some afrikanss due to mmo forsaken world. A few words in norwegian, spanish and french also cause of mmos. Bosnian and serbian cause theyre almost same as croatian.
*sigh* a fraction of spanish, english and german. Maybe all three put together could make up for a whole language :P Add in a few random words of french, and what could sound like a passable italian.
