Title: Preview I: The Batavians
Post by: Valkar on February 05, 2011, 12:42:39 PM
Quote from: "Tacitus"
Of all these nations, the Batavians are the most signal in bravery.

One of the main Factions in Batavia Total War is, of course, the Batavians.
They start with a few regions in the Betuwe area:

The Batavians, master of the horse, originate from the Chatti tribe. Their neighbors, the Kaninefatii, who possess the same skill for the horse as the Batavians, are also descents of the Chatti...
They split up from the Chatti after a hassle, and they desided to move westwards to the sea. They arrived in the Netherlands, and they would stood there for more many years.

When the Romans came, they signed a special treaty with the Batavians. The Batavians could keep their freedom and sovereignty, but they had to fight for the Romans.
The lived in peace and happiness for years. But when Nero came to power, the romans become arrogant and they treated the Batavians as lower people. This created anger.
When Nero died, a successor war would rise. The Batavians had enough of the Romans, and decided to revolt. They asked the Kaninefatii for help, and together they sacked all roman camps in the area. They arrived at Xanten, and sieged and pillaged it. Then they went to Augusta Trevorum, while collecting Allies like the Usepetes and the Treverii. They were defeated a few times, and driven back.
The Romans had enough of this danger (because it could evoke whole Germania magna) and signed the old agreement. All the Batavians went home, except their leader, who went to Rome as a prisoner of war.

Units

Strengths: Strong Cavalrymen with fast ambush infantry.
Weakness: Lack of serious Archers.

Boere:

Simple peasents who bring their own weaponry to war.
Germanic peasents possess a greater strenght and morale then any other peasent, but their bravery can be their death;

Bijlvechter
(http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2392/bijlvechterinfocopy.jpg)
Germanic axemen are feared in the roman world, mainly for its use in ambushes: a Roman soldier can't get up if he gets hit by a large axe.
These men are not professional warriors: they are woodcutters in peaceful times. Expect no armour, and barely a defense skill.
Use these units well: they are able to crush a enemy, but because of their low defense, use them in ambushes, not as line infantry.
Avoid cavalry and missles.

Knuppelaar
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/7676/knuppelaarinfocopy.jpg)
Professional germanic warriors often choose a mace of club for battles; mainly because its a light but dangerous weapon!
These men are trained from birth with the use of a mace. These men are the line infantry for any Germanic warlord.
Only cavalry will be its breaking point.
