Title: Your impressions from TW:S2
Post by: debux on February 23, 2011, 06:30:33 PM
Tell the rest of the community of your impressions of TW:S2. I don't find it appropriate to talk about it in the demo hype section  :P

In my personal case, I must say it blew me away. Until yesterday, my knowledge, as my interest to learn, even from Japan in general, was minimal. Once I ended playing for two hours, I even started to learn the names, and I realized how cool english with a japanese accent sounds. Graphics are beautiful, the 3D, fully turnable map is a better feature than I thought, as it makes you look at the situation from another way. I can't wait to turn (to look southward) around Europe in a future game. Sound was also good, (although it bugged up once for me) as well as voice acting, from my perspective. The atmosphere in general was well captured, I think. The inclusions of tiny, moving avatars, in the corner for your selected unit looked very nice, and it brought me memories of Warcraft 3. All in all it was fun to play the demo.

Although not all was good. The fact that they embedded a video in the main menu was very bug prone, from my point of view, and it took away the whole atmosphere. It was almost like a publicity ad. And I also think that due to that, either it was in the options menu or while loading there was silence, something that as I noticed later shouldn't happen during the loading times. I found that early in the game, the tutorial was very limiting, as you could only press the buttons when you were told to, so if you wanted to check your finances or play diplomatically, you had to wait until you were told to, or when you were given relative freedom while preparing an invasion. I found this truly annoying, but it might be good for newcomers to the TW series. Minor complaints come from how stupid the avatar of the selected unit looked when you issued many orders, as you would see his head bobbing up and down continuously, following the same animation over and over again; the fact you can only play 3 battles in the whole campaign, and the poor choise of the historical battle (I can't remember the battle name, but it's one where your ally, that has troops equivalent to a third of the allied army, defects to the enemy and attacks you).

All in all, the game seems to be enjoyable. I wonder how a campaign without restrains plays out, but I would like to see the reviews before even considering buying the game. As I don't spent that much money in games, I think I'll wait until they show up in a good offer in steam. Now, if it were TW:R2, I'd have pre-ordered a loooong time ago

I like it, I don't understand why everyone is so upset that it is restricted mostly, it is a demo after all...
but that historical battle is hard xD

The restrictions drove me crazy. The interface was confusing me enough when it wasn't limiting what I could mouseover/click on.

Let us see some screens, I'm not satisfied with the "official" screens.

Another thing I forgot to mention was the fact that you didn't even use your troops you had trained for the battles. The armies were already pre-defined, so that you could get a taste of the new units (like the heroes, ninjas and warrior monks). In a way, it was a good idea, but poorly executed. If they would have given you those troops for I don't know which reason, it would have been better, from my point of view. I got so pissed from having spent maybe 10 seasons waiting for my troops to train, and choosing a favorable season in which to make my invasion, to find out that most of my army wasn't even "there", in a way

I did exactly that. It was so annoying. I trained a sizeable army, so as to have a nice easy battle of exploring new stuff, then it didn't even appear :( .

Also the fire arrows having a cooldown made me sad.

Wow those screenies look NICE!  But the Archers are drawing their bows wrong, unless the Japanese didn't use the "Mediterannean Draw."

I have a question, what are those buttons with the animals on them on the side of the UI of the Cavalry pic?

The buttons with animals on are formations that you can select to put your army into.

Well, regardless of who took them, they still look like lower settings. :P

Not so sure if I like the UI cards, but, aside from the graphical aspect, how does the AI handle itself?

the demo didn't have AA settings available
but I'm unable to beat the historical battle xD

The historical battle is incredibly difficult...

Because the AI is good or they stacked the enemies against you?

Ai is said to be scripted, for all the battles. Even the ones in the campaign. It's a sound idea, to make customers think it's good, but morally it's terrible.

You do know that there are mods already for TW:S2, right?

Historical battle is insane. Your allies, that compose 1/3 of the allied army, defect to the enemy at some point.

Man, I hope they have it on sale on steam this summer, there are sooo many TW:S2 videos out there and it's really tempting. Watching the last samurai doesn't help.

As someone who's played TW since the first Shogun, I really enjoy playing S2TW.  I also really enjoyed the features like Skill Trees for generals and agents (probably one of the best additions ever).  I like the idea of a LAN campaign as well.  Playing anything online isn't an option in my zip code.  As soon as a buddy of mine can free up the funds, we are gonna give the LAN campaign a go.  We loved hotseat in Kingdoms.

How great to have a partner to play TW games with... I tried hooking a friend up, but he turned to the RPG side...

We like both Strategy and RPGs.  I'm more RPG, Strategy, and then some shooter.  While he's more Shooter. Strategy, and then some RPG.
