Title: Let's make fireballs
Post by: Jubal on May 31, 2011, 01:12:26 PM
Right, getting some tests done on meteor storms, just setting the mounts up at the moment. :)

Setting the Y offset too high seems to cause problems on non-flat surfaces, but I'm getting there.

Okayyy... here are the results of my research.

Troops have a minimum downward fire angle. I don't know what it is or where it's set, but it is important. Essentially, then, there's a cone under the troop where they can't fire. There's also a max range, set in the troop description. The higher you put the troop, the wider the "cone" which they can't fire into, so the thinner the ring they can hit into. Beyond about a height of 15 or so above the root node, the cone gets wider than the max range and firing stops. You can make fairly good meteors for that reason, but not fantastic ones unless we can work out how to get that minimum angle decreased.

Lol? I though this was a continuation of the mod idea for outer space TW

The cone is larger than I thought, but it still seems feasible, at least for my purposes. I have my launcher guys set at a height of 50 (root_node_height at 1) which seems to enable a decent swath of ground to be pummeled. Going higher than that narrowed the firing area too much to be effective.

A strategy just needs to be laid out, and that is to keep these guys at the rear to pound the enemy down as they march toward you. Then as they get too close just have these guys fall back some to start a new volley. I am wondering if there is a way to put them into skirmish mode as well in case the enemy gets too close.

As you can see in my portraits here the effect looks pretty good from your own armies' point of view. From the far away side view you can see where the "meteors" originate, some of them were firing at a super high angle, and that's cool. I just kept pummeling the stupid ai as it scrambled to figure out what to do, eventually they said screw this and fell back. :P I just kept falling back to start new volleys again and again until they charged me. I managed to kill over 800 of them with just those 4 units. The enemies' screams of pain and agony was horrible to witness.  8)

The next stage is to work out if we can lower the minimum firing angle. Then we could put the firing point ABOVE THE SKYBOX so they literally fell out of open sky. :D

Awesome. Just plain awesome.

Will this be a standalone as a unit add-on to vanilla, or is it for a specific mod? (I wouldn't mind using it as an easter egg :P )

I cant remeber how it happened but our mod contains a 3d explosian when the rock hits the floor instead of 2d, its done by criss crossing loads of  2d images like some of the bushes funnily enough from vannila. If you would like to use this i can upload a link if your would like to help realism
