Title: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Silver Wolf on September 12, 2011, 08:03:42 PM
So guys what do you think?
Lets do this in order to show people that the Internet isn't necessarily a bad thing for overall body fitness.
Lets promote a healthy way of living...

We could make some kind of plan together and stick to it for sixty days. We can post stuff here and support each other that way and make it a habit...

So who's with me?

Yeah lets do it!

Cant really do the same plan unless everyone wants the same result ie do they want to get hench or lose weight or just increase their fitness/health.

I do 75 pressups a night, can I just keep doing that?
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: comrade_general on September 12, 2011, 10:29:38 PM
Define: "pressups"
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Silver Wolf on September 12, 2011, 11:06:32 PM
@Pentagathusosaurus rex
Depends on what you want... We're all going to do something and team up if we can.

@Jubal
75 in one go? Or like 3 series of 25?
Because 75 is a lot if you do it in one go. I usually do them as a chest and fist exercise (hands wide apart, supporting myself on closed fists).

@ comrade :
Push-ups... English term :D

So my plan was to start with a random number of pushups, crunches, leg lifts, squats and triceps exercises (I have no idea what they're called).
Gradually increasing numbers over time. Maybe it's going to be a bit too fast, but at least you'll learn how to overcome pain.

I was doing some bike riding there for awhile; a few to a dozen miles a day or so. Guess I should try to do that again. I also do some lifting with a pair of 15lb dumbbells when I feel like it.

I don't think anyone here is really overweight are they? Most of you guys seem like sticks to me (haven't seen all of you though), but I'm the only American here and even I'm not overweight. :P

Not bad at all CG.

I have a perfect body mass index. I was a bit fat a year ago, but I lost 10kg (22lb) since then (all in less the 2 months)... Now I have a steady weight and a fast metabolism and my goal is to gain muscle mass.

I'll start tomorrow.

Post by: comrade_general on September 13, 2011, 12:03:49 AM
How will we gauge progress? Maybe take a measurement of one's bicep as the weeks proceed?
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Silver Wolf on September 13, 2011, 12:07:32 AM
I have no idea. Measuring progress is purely optional, but I guess we could do that...

My idea is to make working out a normal part of my day and to turn it into a habit. Which will lead to better fitness, health and so on...
That's the most important part for me.

Sounds good.

But today is Monday, and I have a splitting headache, so no excess exertion for me. :(

Weight and fitness aren't the same. Very often, people who are naturally skinny think that they don't need to exercise, and as a result can be very unfit.

I mostly keep fit by walking, cycling, and gardening. I've never been a great fan of exercise that doesn't serve a direct purpose in some way.

Silver wolf if you want to gain muscle mass then that plan wont work too well, although its not a bad starting point. Usually you'd want to be lifting wieghts that are just heavy enough for you to do 3 or 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps but if you havent done this before its best to work at lower reps for a while to strengthen your ligaments so you dont injure yourself. And you might want to add pullups to your list.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Jubal on September 13, 2011, 07:16:55 PM
Usually 50/25 or 60/15 as a spilt, in term of the numbers. I should get more aerobic exercise really, but that takes time (alas!).

Andalus: same, but my pressups serve a function, namely helping me in not getting bulldozed utterly when I go to Judo.  :P

I wish I could do 1 press up...... Literally.

I used to be extremely fit and healthy, but now I laze around and my natural fitness levels have fallen through the floor. And kept on going ever since.

I know I've been doing that for 3 years... But noting beats the push-ups... They're a much tougher exercise, and that's the important part.
I usually just do something between 100 and 200 reps and that's it. And I still can't do more than 25 push-ups... Mostly because of my problems with  breathing.

Usually 50/25 or 60/15 as a spilt, in term of the numbers. I should get more aerobic exercise really, but that takes time (alas!).

That's really good, actually... But you should raise the numbers the further you go...

Hey, that's exactly why we're doing this... Join us!  :)

Btw; I started working out this morning. I'm going to keep this pace for three of for days and them I'm going to raise the numbers. Going to post details some other time... I'm really tired at the moment.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up

I have been raising the numbers, I could only do 15 when I started a few months ago.  :P

Did something like this:
I felt kind of lazy today... I didn't get much sleep last night.

Leg lifts (30 reps) - 1 series
Crunches (50 reps) - 2 series
Push ups - none, took a break from the 60 I did yesterday.
Squats (50 reps)  - 2 series
Dips with elevated feet (20 reps) - 1 series

I suffered a pretty serious injury about two years back and my fitness fell apart since. So this might be a good idea. Now if only I could get some time free from nerd-stuff so I can be a jock for a few hours a week. :P

I attempted to go to the gym somewhat in the last year, but I was never really motivated enough to do it...

I'll probably spend most of this year intending to go to the gym and get a bit fitter, but will actually spend most of my time sat around :D .

Haha Im just too damned lazy. I can only do girly push ups. Cant run, oooh I LOVE swimming but alas its still sort of chilly. Ill only go for a walk or bike ride if it isnt sunny. Cloudy is nice though.

Well I got out and rode a bit and did some lifting today.

I think it's better to let the body do the counting, because a set of numbers usually doesn't fit the individual doing them. I never count my reps, I just keep going until I've had enough then go a bit further. This way you naturally progress.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up

But how do you know if you're doing more than last week CG?

Sounds fine to me... Counting reps usually makes me forget the proper way of breathing during exercises.

Whatever suits you. But you know what they say...  The more, the merrier.

I spent most of my free time today sculpting, gluing and cutting miniatures for which I needed a steady hand... So I skipped most of my exercises, but I'm going to do at least the bare minimum before I go to sleep...

Okay, well I'll do a tad more if I have time, perhaps start and finish 30 mins before and after my normal routine. ^^

Does spending my days doing an awful lot of heavy lifting count as a workout? :P

In all seriousness though, what I want to do is not lose weight, but lose the excess fat. If that means weight loss, great. Having it converted to muscle would be great as well. :)

My brother and I exercise now and then. He mostly just plays on his Nintendo DS. I am naturally stick-thin. My brother, not so. He's younger than me, so maybe he'll even out later. Anyways, I do ~25 full push-ups, a few minutes break, than 35 "Knee Push-ups" (I have my knees on the floor, instead of on my toes), followed by 20 sit-ups. I miss a day or 2 now and then, and I'm not particularly strong (I'm a scholar, what can yah say?). Every 3rd day I do 10 min of Jog-In-Place, too. Not much of a "Work-Out", as much as a "Don't get chubby" thing. My High-School has a 2km/1mile square campus, so I get a work-out walking all around with my 20-25lb bookbag+books

25 Push-Ups
35 "Knee" Push-Ups
20 Sit-Ups
10 Min Jog-In-Place
High-School Campus + 20-25lb Bookbag

All in all, not too bad, I think. Opinions on improving the regimen?

I think everyone should get up 20 minutes earlier than usual, and go for a mile jog everyday :p except weekends...

Post by: Silver Wolf on September 15, 2011, 09:58:27 PM
Wow now that sounds awful... Sometimes it's hard to be a girl...

Anyway...
I did two sets of push-ups and dips.
Skipped squats... My legs are  still in pain because of the last 100 I did. (yes, I raised the numbers)
Did one series of crunches. Might do one or two more.
Only leg lifts left...

And I've decided not to raise the numbers for a few more days... Pain is not what I need at the moment.

Don't go too fast. If it's seriously hurting, stop. Otherwise you don't get buffed up, you just get torn ligaments or muscle damage.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Silver Wolf on September 15, 2011, 10:11:16 PM
Hey, it's "No pain no gain" for me... I know it may sound weird, but I don't feel any improvement if I don't do it that way.
Pain goes away eventually, just as most things in life do, but the sense of accomplishment remains.

Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: comrade_general on September 25, 2011, 04:15:37 PM
More weight. There have been studies which show that using more weight with less reps gets better results than less weight with more reps.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Jubal on September 25, 2011, 04:37:50 PM
It depends what you mean by better results. Exercise makes you better at doing what you're doing.

In terms of muscle bulk, less reps and more weight increases your muscle size more and makes you look bulkier. That doesn't make your muscles necessarily the most powerful though (power, remember, is energy divided by time), since you're just trying to shift max weight and not worrying about speed. The reason I do press-ups is that the activity is fairly fast and thus simulates better the quick arm actions required for Judo.

Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: CN2 on September 27, 2011, 06:21:57 PM
Jubal is right, lots of weight and less reps builds muscle, but many reps with a lower weight tones the muscle you have :)

I am raising what I do a day too now, 20 reps per arm with a 12k weight, 50 with an 8k weight and 100 with a 6k weight. Plus about 6 miles of running a week and 10 miles of rowing every wednesday.
Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: Jubal on September 27, 2011, 09:16:43 PM
Massive, untoned muscles are a bit pointless. You might be able to lift massive amounts of weight, but you'll find that there are guys with a tenth of your muscle mass who can hit twice as hard, and not only that but if you run more than about ten metres you'll be panting for breath.  :P

Title: Re: A 60 day challenge : Getting buffed up
Post by: CN2 on September 27, 2011, 11:01:20 PM
Alot of weight will build muscle yes, but it wont look nice. Smaller weights with plenty of reps is also necessary. That's why I do 6kg weights after doing heavier ones :)

Well I haven't posted on this thread for a while but I have kept up with it. While it may not be a lot for you guys, I do spend literally hours every day whacking stuff with heavy sticks so that probably does wonders.

I've gone from 20 situps and 20 pushups a night (my attempt at just keeping in shape, not sure how effective it is) to 50 of each in increments of 25 with about a minute break in between. Not to mention that I go for a run most mornings. So I have increased my exertions. But not by a lot.

Oh and chinups on the support beams. I came second in a competition we did at school two years back (um 17 I think I did, not sure anymore. Ladyhawk might remember.) and then hadn't done one since. So I've started again and can now do 12 "fairly comfortably." By "fairly comfortably," I of course mean "if I fight through all the muscles of my body that are screaming at me to stop." I am sooooo out of shape.

My problems include:
1. I dont really know what to do for excerise and what will burn fat the best.
2. I can NOT excerise in front of people. If my mum walks into the room and praises me for exercising, I immediatly stop. I cant stand it.
3. I work at a supermarket, meaning CHOCOLATE!!
4. Im a girl, meaning CHOCOLATE AND ICE-CREAM!!!

All in all, my chances are not looking that good, im afraid.

You eat a surprising amount on a Weight Watchers program, more about healthy weight loss and good habits you can maintain than, OMGZOMGLOL BURN IT AWWWWAAAAAYYYYY!!!

Do you have WW of equivalent in Oz.

(Note: This is all second-hand information.)

(Note: Possibly even third-hand.)

I am still doing the same, think I should do more guys?

And WW is for people that are silly ^^ (Probably say this because my mum went.. bad times...) They get obsessed with 'points'.

I went on a half an hour to forty-five mintues walk yesterday (throught the rain, cause Im weird like that)
I have stopped eating as much as I used too.
I have tried to cut out all of the "bad food" at work.

I got on the scales, I am 79.6 kilos, which is not good.
Mum has the whole family on a healthy eating thing, so that will be quite helpfull.

I've tweaked my workout. Now includes push-ups (or press-ups  ::)) and sit-ups, which I've discovered I needed badly. I need to get rid of this excess fat though.  >:(

Chin-ups. Lots and lots of chin-ups. Do 10, 5 minute break, do another 10. Repeat this 10 times for one session. 3 sessions a day is my plan.

This is in addition to the run in the mornings and my nightly sit-ups and push-ups. Having done two sessions already today, I can say, I'M FEELING THE BURN! Lol.

And all of this just to work around my arm-wrestling allergy. :D

Stopped doing crunches long ago, but I'm doing something similar instead. I get into crunch position and lock my upper body in the middle of the air with my hands behind my neck and hold that position as long as I can. Works miracles for me.

Blarg. Cookie for the ref.

Well I'm sick and I have been sick for a while in addition to the trip to Melbourne so my fitness has fallen by the wayside. Now I have to get back on track.

I'll start all over again. Past few months were not so good for me and I've lost my routine.
It's funny, isn't it? Sh** happens exactly when you start seeing the first results of your training :P

I guess I'll be in a better mood once I start working out again...

Being the noob at a high-level martial arts group is perhaps more embarassing: at least at the gym people don't show you up by the simple method of throwing you onto your back. Repeatedly. :P

Speaking of which, I really need to get back to doing Judo more regularly, I keep being ill and stuff. :(
