Title: Axiosa: Game Thread
Post by: Jubal on October 11, 2011, 08:56:13 PM
Okay, the four of you have all lived your lives up to this point around the hill-village of Kjalt. It's just a few miles from where the Axiosan capital used to be - the place is now a deserted ruin, because it got destroyed in the Union invasion. Banditry is common, the rulers locally are unpopular military types from the Union (a huge state run by Vampires which you currently inhabit).

Kjalt is pretty tiny, just a few houses and a little tavern. There's a small shrine to Hades, but no priest. What'd you want to do?

Surverniose was sitting outside his ragged house taking in the view. He was admiring the sun coming over the mountains in the far distance and how it made the sky glow a pinkish orange kind of colour. He could see the smoke coming from the chimney of the Splintered Axe tavern but that wasn't much to look at.

His house, located on the outskirts of the village, wasn't much too look at either; it was small with just two rooms. The outside wasn't so bad; it had two windows out the front, not glass, and a door in between the windows. The roof was just thatched straw with a stone chimney sticking out of the top. Surverniose kept his horse, named Nero, in a small make-shift stable behind the house. Nero was a female jet black horse which Surverniose sometimes called his Black Knight.

Surverniose looked around to see the usual hustle and bustle of the early morning, which in Kjalt was barely any at all. He sighed and said "Just the way I like it" closing his eyes to savour the quietness of this peaceful village. Surverniose came here to settle in and for peace from the world he used to live in. The great cities were never quiet, not even at night.

He thought he had better get started with his job. He was an Errand Rider so he rode around on his horse to be available if anyone needs help. Sometimes he gets small jobs like delivering a message to someone on the other side of the village. Other times he has to run errands, like take 4 new horse shoes to Reptav or take a bag of wheat to Lewert.

Surverniose went to his stable to feed and water Nero than brushed her down. After all of that was done he took Nero out of her stall, around the house, jumped on and set down the dirt street towards the village center in search of an errand.

I sit at the creaking desk in the, small and unreasonably cold, upstairs room of my poorly built house.

A thin willow pipe sits between my cracked lips as I gently scribble on the parchment with all of the last day’s happenings. It doesn’t take long.

I've just been to visit the smithy to collect some bits and pieces for my tinkering needs.

When i return home i find that my spotted black and grey bloodhound is roaming free on the streets. He seems to be looking at something over the hill but instead of letting him at it i persuade him back into the yard and start crafting my latest inspiration (which will remain a secret till i choose to tell you).

I ride around doing random errands for the people of the town and than I decide to go to the tavern. When I get there I order a drink and a nice T-bone steak. I see Leonard sitting in the corner and go sit with him. He looks tired from a days work.

"How are you this fine afternoon?" I ask

You hear the sound of hooves outside, and the call of a single, deep and rather sonorous, voice. It only sounds like one horse - or perhaps a donkey - but villagers are poking their heads out to take a look.

What'd you want to do?

I yawn and say "Whatever it is, it doesn't bother me."

Everyone starts to move to take a look outside and it makes me curious. We don't get many visitors in this small town so I take a peak out the window.

A youngish man with a broad but slightly dopey face is leading a donkey through the centre of the village. He wears long robes, of a deep purpley-blue colour, and his head is shaven.

"Penny for the preacher!" he calls. "Penny for the work of the gods! All blessings are upon those who give kindness to travellers!"
Title: Re: Axiosa: Game Thread
Post by: Cuddly Khan on October 28, 2011, 08:34:56 AM
I frown and look at the guy. I think it's just someone pretending to be a preacher to get some money. The thing is that preachers don't usually beg for money, they ask if you would like to give an offering for a blessing or they take it. Originally coming from the city I know this by experience.

I go back to my seat to finish my nice, juicy, delicious, T-bone steak ignoring the sound of the fake preacher asking for money.

As i am a curious sort of guy, being a tinker and all, i decide to go and ask him what his true cause is. He merely gives me a foreboding look and continues to call out his message.

I mingle back into the crowd and continue watching.

I finish my steak and wash it down with a nice beer than I walk outside to see that the commotion has continued around the corner. I smile and think this has been a very eventful day for this small town. Before going home I decide to go for a nice walk outside of the village. I take my club with me because there's bandits around these areas. That is mostly the reason for not many visitors here.

(Another side not: I think it's meant to be Jubal. I'm not sure.)

GMPOST

Please avoid statements like:

Quote
the commotion has continued around the corner.
Quote
He merely gives me a foreboding look and continues to call out his message.

I know what these characters are like and what they're going to do. Therefore please allow me to unfold the world I have designed and prepared for this very purpose.

Also, do feel free to use the term "OOC:" to ask common knowledge questions. For example, if you want to go and buy some firewood, or a sword, ASK where you would go to do such a thing rather than shaping the world to allow you to do so. Otherwise I don't get to set you any challenges, which is half the fun of my job in this.  :P

P.S. Remember the OOC thread for questions as well, and note that I will charge you for beers and food. Your means are not endless and starvation can happen if you run out of money. Furthermore, if you, say, drink endless beer, I can inform you that you are now drunk, which may adversely affect actions you attempt tp take.

Hope that all makes a little more sense.  :)

The preacher turns to NA/DN, and says "The work of a priest does not rest in lands where his god is not worshipped, my child. And particularly those of the small gods - finding few friends in the world, it matters little whether the swords of Hades or the fires of Jupiter take us, our faith is the most important thing." He blesses a man's small child with an air of quiet, almost fragile solemnity, in a language you do not know or understand.

Khan: the "don't move the world around yourself" should preferably include moving the time of day along. It's still mid-afternoon for everyone else, because they haven't finished dealing with the preacher yet.

He happily blesses DN, smiling graciously, then turns back to Nightangel.

"If I tell it, I shall need to be on my way rather quickly. And some danger often comes of storytelling, for stories are the fabric from which our world is woven. Are you sure it is a tale you wish to hear?"

I was waiting for Khan and DN to post, but whatever. I do also have a hell of a lot of work, so please cut me a bit of slack at the moment. I'm honestly devoting as much time as I possibly can to keeping this place going.

"I am the high priest - to whit, the only priest - of the river-god Achelous. Like many other religious men, my order has been hounded by the Union on the one hand or the priests of Jupiter in other domains. Until there is only one left, who you see before you. There; that is danger enough you have been placed in by knowing this."

He turns to the other villagers.

"Thankyou for your kind charity! I must continue on my journey soon, friends; blessings be upon all of you."

Death Nade: You hear a faint tinny sound in the distance, though you can't make it out exactly.

What do you all wish to do next?

DN, Khan: You both head to the outside of town. There's definitely a brassy sound, possibly some sort of bugle, audible in the distance down the valley. It's getting progressively louder, and people are coming out of their houses due to the disturbance. There's also a thumping noise - possibly hooves.

NA: "Thankyou for your invitation, good sir, but I would be afraid to endanger you any more by my presence..." The sound at this point becomes audible in the centre of the little township, and the priest's head flicks from side to side. "That said, if those are soldiers, I might find myself grateful for a hiding place."

DD: You cut some wood.
You gain 2xp.  :P

Khan: you head around asking people if they have any errands that need running. Most of them are either out or more concerned with the rapidly approaching noise, though, and you can't find anyone who needs anything doing.

DD: You cut some wood. Life is fun.

DN: You catch sight of around five or six horsemen, just coming into view out of the woods. Kjalt is on a flattish hilltop, so they're coming uphill from the bottom of a small dry valley to the south, along the road.

NA: You and the man both head towards your house. He's looking increasingly nervous as people in the square start chattering excitedly and someone runs up the hill shouting "Cavalry! Soldiers are coming!".

Title: Re: Axiosa: Game Thread
Post by: Jubal on December 27, 2011, 11:29:27 AM
Apologies for the hiatus, but while we tried to fix the malware something had to drop off my schedule.

@NA: The priest hides in the attic, leaving his donkey around the back of your house.

@DD: You cut trees down, cut the wood up, then sell it. Nice and simple.

@DN: They don't talk, but thunder on towards the centre of the village - you follow them.

@Khan: You head home towards the middle of the village.

The leader of the horseman calls them to a halt, then trots into the middle of the central square.

"This is a routine visit for tax collection and inspections! Tax rates have gone up to one sixth of your earnings in the past year, plus any necessary supplies for local military garrisons. We have also been charged to search for several local vagabonds; a murderer, a tall man with black hair and a cut on his cheek, a roguish trickster who appeared to be in the guise of a priest, a young woman who escaped from domestic service to the marshal, and an elderly man accused of poisoning his neighbour. Any information you can give us would be well received."

The populace start muttering grimly about the high taxes, but a few begin to head to their homes - probably to stash away particularly valuable good the soldiers might take.

None of you have committed any major crimes of that sort.

DD: You don't know, exactly. Generally the way it works is that they decide what they think you're worth and whether they like you, then work out what they need to take and how much else they can get away with taking. They'll want payment in coin though, they're a small cavalry patrol so they won't be able to haul large items.

Khan: When you're riding it, we assume you're in full control. Obviously, you can't control the horse when you're not riding it.
You ride left and right, trying to shake off your pursuers, but their horses are at least as fast as yours. There aren't many streets IN the town, either, so losing them is proving pretty difficult. What do you wish to do?

DN: Okay, you wander over and inexplicably start sleeping.

NA: *Rolls virtual dice for the first time this game, interpersonal test*
Your lies aren't terribly successful, though the soldier certainly stops to think them over. He asks you who this person is, their occupation, and where they are staying. And why they're not on the tax records for the village. And why you have their donkey.  :P

Khan/DN:No, DD went north to chop wood, you're running south. You do go quite close past DN, who is woken up by the nearby horse-chase.

You continue into the forest; two continue in pursuit of you, and one turns back towards the village.

NA: "So why did you agree to look after his donkey? Have you ever seen him before locally?" (The soldier is currently taking notes).

DD: No, as far as you know nothing has happened. That said, you've now cut about as much wood as you can reasonably carry back to the village, so there's not much point staying out of town for longer.

Title: Re: Axiosa: Game Thread

NA: The officer notes this down, and thanks you for your help.
12 XP awarded for damn good lying attempts.
OOC: Yes, but to upgrade skills, levels, etc, you need experience. As a rough guide, 100xp will allow you a full level up, and there are different levels of skill you can buy as well. But I'll get to that when most people are around the 30-50xp mark, which hopefully won't take too long now we're speeding up gameplay.

DN: You climb up the tree, and the rider halts below the tree. He dismounts and calls up to ask you what on earth you are doing.

DD: You sit around in the forest. You can see squirrels! :D

Khan, you're still running through the forest until you choose to do otherwise.

NA: No, they're in uniform. Small cylindrical hats, dark blue coats. The officer has a wide brimmed hat with a little plume. They're carrying sabres and pistols, standard cavalry gear.

Title: Re: Axiosa: Game Thread

DD: White-tailed, the common variety around your area. They're a little larger than a RL grey squirrel, with white ear-tips and a white tail and belly, but a black back and face. (Yay for on-the-spot fluff generation)

NA: The officer mutters a bit about idiots and rebellious nutters kicking up a fuss again, then looks you up and down and comes a little closer. "Between you and me, yes, but we're not supposed to be saying it in public. Troops mobilised all over the lowlands, looks like the higher ups are really worried about something."
(+8xp for epically successful interpersonal rolls. Hello, gift of the gab)

DN: The soldier looks confused for a second, then asks you to come down.

Okay, this next but (Khan) is the first combat of the game. To clarify, this is done by diceroll & charts, but I'll just report the details as they come out rather than the numbers.
Khan: You spur your horse back towards the two riders. One's horse rears at the sudden turn, and he fumbles with his sword. The other pulls his sword, but as you are already in mid-swing you manage to club him soundly, staggering him and giving you the chance to deal a second blow swiftly afterwards. This he attempts to parry, but you are able to knock his sword back. His arm is clearly broken by the blow, and he just about manages to pull his horse back with his remaining hand, and turns, leaving you facing the other rider whose sword is now drawn.

Do you want to try and attack the other rider, or flee again?
(+25 xp for defeating an enemy, insanely good dicerolls there)

I'm not game enough to try my luck again, I run as fast as I can hoping that the surprise attack was enough to let me lose them. Now I have a problem, they'd want me even more now.

Sorry!

DN: You need to roll against your movement value (doubles up as agility) for every tree you jump to, so it's pretty difficult to get far that way unless you're an absolute ninja. Do you want to try anyway?

Khan: You keep going; are you just going to carry on through the forest uphill, stay along the countours of the hill, or cut down into the valley?

DD: Not much happens. There are still squirrels here.
(You also suck at spot checks)

NA: You look out of the door, and see another villager (a man called Jarun, who works as a cobbler) in an argument with the soldiers, who appear to have removed his door forcibly.

Title: Re: Axiosa: Game Thread
Post by: Jubal on May 08, 2012, 03:29:45 PM
Khan: it's a dry valley, but fortunately as you reach the valley bottom your pursuer's horse trips, allowing you to cross the road. You're now in the trees on the other side of the valley, south of the town. What do you want to do?

DN: The soldier is fairly young, and clean-shaven, with quite a thin face. In fact, you realise, he is a she (the practice of women dressing up as young soldiers, particularly to follow their husbands/lovers, is not uncommon and is usually overlooked by generals keen to have any cannon fodder they can get, so this does not surprise you greatly). She clearly believes you to be some sort of village idiot, and grabs your shoulder, steering you back towards the village; she does not seem particularly ill-disposed towards you or threatening, however. (+3xp for good perception check)

NA: Jarun does not seem to be able to hear you over the sound of his own shouting, and the argument gets increasingly fractious as you look on. You see a soldier coming back into the central square, holding a man by the shoulder (this is DN).

DD: Hey. Squirrels. You know what I like about squirrels? Not much.

Khan: you start heading down the valley to the south; you remember however that there is a checkpoint only a mile or so away so you couldn't get far this way without being seen by soldiers again. There is a slope to the east, and a small trackway up through the trees that loops around the village to the northwest.

DN: She is not very talkative, but goes to her commanding officer and has a short discussion.

NA/DN: The soldier that had DN with her walks over, with DN, to Nightangel.
"You seem to be a reasonably responsible fellow, would you mind taking charge of this man? I found him climbing trees outside the village, I fear he may be somewhat addled."
She presents DN towards Nightangel, and noticeably (to you) but surreptitiously also puts a note in DN's pocket

GM query; shall I keep using forum nicks or shall I start using character names in these bits?

Khan: You head up the slope and northwest, there are trees here but nothing that looks terribly hospitable. You vaguely hear a rustling in the trees, to your north.

Khan: You start to head off, but bump into NA and DN, and the priest, heading fairly rapidly in the other direction (you are now effectively all in one place).

NA: "You mean, other than the robes I'm wearing or the fact my donkey's saddlebags are half full of books?"

ALL:
The young female soldier then runs up, sounds of fighting begin to come from the village. She turns to the priest (and clearly knows him well)

Actually it doesn't, sadly, since you'll need to upgrade skills first and that costs XP too. AXIOSA: PART TWO
Into the Wilderness

The four of you travel into the forests for a day without incident. It is now morning on the next day; the donkey has a reasonable amount of supplies on.

The priest suggests a course taking you higher into the thicker forests and hills to the west...

What do you want to do?

NA: As far as you know it takes you up into the wilds - essentially Axiosa becomes progressively rougher and more mountainous until you get into real highlands; there's no fixed border, you've come from one of the further out settlements and the Union's power starts waning as you get further up. The clan country in the mountains is quite wild and inhabited by tribal villages, but you've never visited them and you don't know much about them. You remember seeing a clansman coming to a trading fair once, he was tall and red haired and bearded and wore a strange heavy woolen robe with a sword and pistol belt. That was a few years ago though.

Khan: Nothing in sight.
