Title: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on January 29, 2012, 03:58:08 PM
The first Exilian RTW Swap Game in years begins here!  8)

I suggest we do this one with Pontus on H/H difficulty at 20 turns per person. This is just my suggestion, the discussion is open to others.
At then end of your turn please give a brief history lesson on your progress, and send the save file to the next person in line.

Players:
CG
SotK
stormy?
PG09
NA
Jub
Marcus?

Who else wants to join??

Pontus sounds good. Love me some Scythed Chariots.

WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Seriously though, whats a swamp game?
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on January 29, 2012, 09:22:08 PM
Swap, Khan, not swamp. :P

A campaign is started by one player, they play through a designated number of turns, and then save the game and pass it on to the next person. The cycle continues until victory is achieved, or lost.

I'm sorry guys, I'd love to join but my vanilla RTW has the absolute armadillo modded out of it.

Modfolders? :P

You could always turn what used to be the vanilla folder into a modfolder (rename it, copy to somewhere else temporarily) and reinstall the game. :)

My first turn is complete! Here follows a summary of the years 270 to 260BC:

Military -
A small army under Prince Pharnaces set out to conquer Nicomedia. They were successful in starving the town to submission.
Spartocus led a band of light cavalry out and set up watch on the only bridge between the homeland and Armenia. The guard force has been steadily receiving reinforcements since then.
Now bolstered with reinforcements from home, Pharnaces set out to conquer Ancyra. The stubborn barbarians there wouldn't go out with a fight, but they soon learned the consequences of resisting Pontic spears! Seven men were lost.
The smell of Greek treachery was discovered in Nicomedia. Pharnaces' forces were moved into a defensive position in that region. He hired some mercs.

Diplomacy -
Trade rights obtained from the Greeks, Seleucids, Armenians, Parthians, and a full alliance was established with Egypt.

Construction -
A mix of buildings being contructed. A City Barracks has been constructed at Sinope, with Cavalry Stables already purchased and in the works.

Financial -
Profits are up around 2000 per turn.

Next turn ends at Summer 250BC

Well done CG and good luck SotK.

Can we please get a bit of a run-down on the diplomatic situation with some of the other relevant factions CG?

Cheers,
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: comrade_general on February 01, 2012, 12:10:40 PM
Sure, a quick run-down shows that the Romans are at war with the Greeks and Carthage; the Gauls have managed to obtain many alliances (most Romans, Britons, Spain, Dacia); the Germans are at war with Scythia, Dacia, and the Britons; and Egypt, Armenia, and Parthia have already ganged up on the Seleucids.
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: Son of the King on February 01, 2012, 05:09:31 PM
Done. Hate Egypt.

Military:

- Greek treachery occured! They sent a couple of armies heading over to Ancyra, so Pharnaces followed. When the siege was begun, Pharnaces rode to the aid of the Peasants trapped inside. With most of the Greek forces killed, Pharnaces set his sights on Pergamum, and after a bloody battle the city was Pontic.
- The rebels blocking the road from Sinope were chased south, and the chasing army headed towards the bridges south of Mazaka, having noticed that our trustworthy allies Egypt were strengthening along the border.
- A large Armenian force came and wandered back and forth between Sinope and Mazaka, before leaving for their homeland a few years later.
- Egypt broke our allegiance! They besieged Mazaka, and were swiftly routed by Rhoemetalces  and his force who had been chasing rebels a year earlier.
- Having beaten back the first force, a full stack of Egyptians headed towards the bridges near Mazaka. Rhoemetalces blocked their path, and sure enough they attacked. A great victory was won, almost every Egyptian was slain and only 70 Pontic men fell. Not a year had passed before another large army had crossed the other bridge and besieged Mazaka.
- Pharnaces was besieging the city of Sardis when an Egyptian force arrived near Ancyra. He left the city to deal with these invaders. With them routed, he headed back towards Sardis.
- The decade ended with a huge battle outside Mazaka. Again Rhoemetalces lifted the siege, no little thanks due to the brave fighting of some Eastern infantry, who managed to fight off two units of Chariots whilst only losing 31 men themselves.

Diplomacy:

- We found a willing ally in Parthia, but they also allied with Egypt. When Egypt took a fancy to our lands, Parthia sided with them.
- The Greeks begged for peace after Pergamum was taken. It was soon broken again when they sat an army outside Sinope. Again they begged for peace, but before long the army had returned.
- Egypt hate us.
- The Selucids are almost dead.

Sounds like the Egypt-law of RTW has come into full effect. Nice job holding back those craven dogs! (or cats? Egyptians like cats right?) :P
Were you able to train any pikemen? They will be useful against those chariots.

Next turn ends at Summer 240BC.

Good luck, stormcloud. I think you'll need it. ;)

This is my first time playing Rome Total war in years, so I expected it to go horribly, but in the end it went ok, the battles are like riding a bike.
Incoming bulleted wall of text

The game crashed mid fight somewhere around here, then a little later, so my notes are rather screwy, so here's some key points

tl;dr: Egypt is trying to bone us and succeeding, however they often do stupid things with single stacks, snipe them.
REMEMBER TO CHASE DOWN PEOPLE FLEEING AFTER VICTORY IS ANNOUNCED, THEY WILL NOT RALLY AND IT'S FREE KILLS, MOST OF THE DAMAGE I DO IS BY REDUCING MORALE VIA RANGE MOVE IN THE TROOPS, BREAK A FLANK WITH CAVALRY CHARGE THEN WATCH THEM ALL RUN, EGYPT GROSSLY OUTNUMBERS US, WE NEED ALL WE CAN GET
Also all those kills give xp, we have lots of high ranked cavalry now

Nice write up, stormy. "Egypocalypse" xD

It's definitely time to take the fight to Egypt. So PG, it's your turn, and two words I want you to remember are: pikemen and bridges. ;)
Also, I command you to retake Mazaka! It is part of our homeland after all.

Your turn ends at Summer 230 BC.

I have been having so much fun with delayed reinforcement fights, play them well and you get to wipe out two armies, especially if you can retreat one army though another

Allllllrighty then.  Thank you Stormcloud, let's see how this goes.

Wish me luck guys. :D

EDIT* I'll keep that advice in mind CG. ;)

EDIT AGAIN* Well, this is a bit of a mess. I've decided I hate Egypt. As far as the plan goes, the upkeep for Phalangites is pretty good so I'm thinking perhaps we should standardise the garrisons for the majority of the cities in the Empire. 2 Phalangites and a Light Cav unit perhaps? Cheaper than the weird amalgamation of half-dead merc units we have at the moment.

As to Spartocus or whatever his name is, yes at the moment he's roundly useless but if we send him out to sea with roughly a half stack and get him to raid and plunder Egyptian lands while blockading them with the fleet that transported him, he might improve. And the further he is from home, the further we are from having an adulterous, drunkard fool take destroy the Empire.

Any suggestions?

That's my fault for repeatedly swapping in fresher units, I stack up the half dead units to fill places then leave the remainder in towns to come back and replenish.

Any suggestions?

If you really feel that you could do it, then land Spartocus on the Nile and try and take some of the Gypsies' homeland, thereby portugaling up their plans big time. Then form a strong frontal assault from home and just continuously hammer the Gyps south.

But really your turn is your turn, just play it out as you see fit. (and retake Mazaka) ;)

I am so sorry, sorry enough that I've been quite literally ashamed to actually face you all. But tonight is the night. I got a new computer for my birthday and decided to take another crack at it. I've started my turn again and hope to have it done soon. To keep me on track, I've put a lot of effort into keeping it all legible.

I'm updating this post in a minute with all the screens and everything. Hold on a bit, Imageshack, like PG is slow but steady. ;)

ONGOING TURN ANALYSIS:

The turn begins at 240BC.  The Pontic King, Spartocus seems a bit... lacklustre. He and Dionysus "The Lewd" are set to attack a lot of Egyptians. Good luck with that guys, I'll be watching from Ancyra. :P

A new governing centre is built in Pergamum but something will need to be done about the squalor problems in Nicomedia.

The year is 239 BC and there is rioting in Pergamum. A  blacksmith is built in Sardis though so it's not all bad. A little bit of extreme haggling gets a bit of cash and trade rights from Gaul in exchange for map info.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In addition, Dionysus and Spartocus attack the Ptolemaic menace in the very centre of our empire... kingdom... satrapy? What the hell was Pontus anyway? :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Deployment is weird on the undulating Pontic plains. I use the rocky formation to hold the right flank of my phalanx while one group of cavalry will protect the from going around the side. The other group will flank and hopefully rout the Egyptians once they hit the sarissas. The general will hold still and do a bit of "inspiring." Hopefully the king will arrive with his reinforcements cause otherwise Dionysos is screwed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Dionysus: "What is this? Spartocus, you have betrayed me!"
Messenger: "It's not too bad sir, the Egyptian leader has been delayed too!"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The right wing of the Pontic cavalry does exceedingly well, taking down the Ptolemaic captain in short order.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The enemy reinforcements arrive and all semblance of control I had over the battle is lost... Any semblance of calm I retained at 12am was lost too...

Me: HOLY armadillo AS IF I NEEDED CHARIOTS TO ADD TO MY WORRIES!
Dionysos: HOLY armadillo AS IF I NEEDED CHARIOTS TO ADD TO MY WORRIES!
Messenger: Now it's all bad...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All of my plans to take regularish screenshots went out the window as I tried desperately not to make a fool out of myself on the depressing beast that is the interwebs. My next screenshot is well after the danger has past, when Spartocus finally gets his lazy ass into the battle. By now the Egyptian family memer has fled with all of his chariots and some other armadillo's happened in the centre of my line while I wasn't looking. But now the Pontic cavalry has once again proven itself, trampling all (Well hopefully not too many Pontics obviously. That would defeat the purpose.) under their hooves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only one man manages to escape from the cavalry. They should make a new reality show, Survivor: Pontus. 'Twould be amusing. Challenges include not being run over by horsies and dodging hundreds of pelted javelins.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This could have been one of my greatest battles. Pretty much the whole army performed admirably but the real stars were the Pontic Heavy Cavalry. I wasn't expecting much from them but by God did they deliver.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
PONTUS IS OURS ONCE MORE MY FRIENDS! NOW WE ONLY NEED TO SURVIVE EIGHTEEN MORE TURNS BEFORE SOMEONE MORE CAPABLE TAKES CONTROL!

TO BE CONTINUED...

Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: Phoenixguard09 on May 06, 2012, 05:58:06 PM
Thanks CG. The rest of tonight's write-up. No more screens because nothing really important happened but here it is.

After the great battle (self-puffery for the win :D ) we leave them with no time to recover, Dionysos storms towards Mazaka while Spartocus attempts to run down the cowardly Ptolemaic family member.

238 BC and Pharnaces' wife Pythadoras dies. Poor thing. At least she's with her brave husband, frolicking on the fields of Elysium... What was the Pontic religion anyway? Would it have been more Perisan than Greek?

Dionysos besieges Mazaka while Spartocus attacks and kills the Ptolemaic family member. During the battle however a tactical error on my part sees a disproportionate amount of men die. The force falls back to Ancyra rather than continue on to attack Tarsus.

Finally the rioting in Pergamom ceases as a new governing centre is installed. Trade rights are also established with the Scythians.

Mazaka is taken with little difficulty and heaps of peasants are set to be trained in Nicomedia to be disbanded elsewhere in our Empire to give the struggling Nicomedian infrastructure a chance to recover.

237 BC and a new governing centre is established in Nicomedia, quietening them for a while. Similar operations are being carried out in Sinope while the military is regularised everywhere else. Basically just trying to sort out garrisons.

That's where I called it a night. Tomorrow should see the end of my turn.

I'm really sorry again, especially CG. I just hope that this is enough to demonstrate the depths of my remorse. I have neglected you all. :(

Title: Re: Swap 2012

Hey again.

236 BC sees a nasty load of Aigyptians at Mazaka. Within Mazaka resides Dionysos but unfortunately all his heavy cavalry is in Sinope being retrained. The plan is to have the Ptolemaic armies attack and then lift the siege with the returning horsemen.

Spartocus leads a group of men who would be good to have retrained towards Nicomedia. Along the way, they decide to attack the rebel Galatian forces just outside Ancyra. The enemy has four Tindanotae bands (Naked Fanatics) and another band of cavalry. Spartocus doesn't believe the fight will be that difficult.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battle went well...ish. The exception? The chariots, who routed before they even made contact with the enemy cavalry. I know Tindanotae are supposed to be scary but I did not expect the chariots to run away before they even made contact. After that though, the battle went well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well Laodice is betrothed and I said yes. Mazaka is also besieged and the cavalry in Sinope is ready to ride to the rescue.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

235 BC Ancyra and Nicomedia have new governing centres constructed while a shrine to Zeus is erected in Pergamum. Ancyra though is also besieged and the Egyptians won't leave Mazaka alone like I hoped they would. Oh well, here comes the cavalry.

The enemy lines up....
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
... and flee the battle almost immediately. Bloody Aigyptian cowards.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Don't suppose it has anything to do with this...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After such a disappointing wet blanket of a battle, the cavalry force joined by Rhescuporis ride to relieve the capital.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A new governing centre is built in Sinope while Rhescuporis lifts the siege of Ancyra.

The battle begins with Rhescuporis thinking that this was a bad idea.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rhescuporis: portugaling chariots!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With great difficulty, somehow, Rhescuporis actually manages to kill or run off the Aigyptian chariots, however at a terrible loss of life among his brave cavalry. They then make a break towards the King's weak men from within Ancyra.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rhescuporis: TO SPARTOCUS!
Spartocus: I'M SPARTOCUS! (I couldn't resist mate. :P )

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

234 BC and Germania has been destroyed. From what I can tell the Selucid Empire is probably not far behind. My guess is that Britannia has invaded continental Europe from the north and their chariots are as telling in auto-resolve as the Aigyptian ones are.
233 BC and I'm laughing. The Aigyptians came to us with an insulting prospect, that of becoming a client state. Laughing I responded that we would for the sum of 40000 denarii, thinking they would refuse out of hand. Instead they offered 1750. I laughed and unthinkingly haggled with them, thinking they would not pay over 5000 denarii. I was wrong. We are now a client state of Egypt but on the plus side, we got 10000 denarii out of them. :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Egypt immediately breaks the alliance and besieges Sardis. Sardis also expands. Rhoemetalces, the Pontic Heir in Ancyra dies of natural causes, a loss that will surely be missed.

232 BC and we have an alliance with Parthia.  There are two huge Ptolemaic stacks near Ancyra but at least one appears to be headed for Nicomedia. Sardis is still under siege. On the plus side, we are on a war footing and men are being raised all over the countryside.

That's where I left it for now because I need to go to tennis soon enough and I wanted to get the pics up for you all.
Title: Re: Swap 2012
Post by: Phoenixguard09 on May 07, 2012, 03:00:55 PM
Hi all, I'm back again.

It's 232 BC and Ancyra and Sardis are both under siege. The Sardisians(?) sally out in an attempt to break through the Aigyptian pickets.

231 BC and Ancyra is still besieged.

Rhescuporis leads his cavalry in an attempt to free Ancyra. Spartocus arrives, even in the middle of a sandstorm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The sandstorm clears up, a load of Aigyptians die, unfortunately so do a heap of Pontics and in the withdrawal, the cavalry decides its a good idea to withdraw through the enemy... chariots...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

THE KING IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KING!

Unfortunately, while Spartocus was a bit of a dunce, all of that cavalry is now gone too. And I think we may have just lost Ancyra.
Never mind, Ancyra is retained although probably not for long as there are two mauled Aigyptian armies besieging it and there's less than sixty men holding the walls.

Rhescuporis' cavalry army has been reduced to his retinue and a single unit along with some celtic mercenaries he was able to hire.

Aigypt breaks the siege of Ancyra to try to take out Rhescuporis, the man responsible for a string of their recent defeats while he is weak. With no "movement points:-

Rhescuporis: Movement points? What the hell is a movement point?

Right, sorry. He's tired. Anyway he can't withdraw and so is brought to a horribly lopsided battle.

With great skill Rhescuporis takes on the Aigyptian host, killing many of them before escaping back into Ancyra, buying the settlement precious time. He then makes his move back to Nicomedia, to retrain troops to help drive the Ptolemaic forces back to their own lands.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The summer of 230 BC arrives and with it, the relinquishing of my power. The horribly mauled Aigyptian army has retreated while the relatively intact one has remained near Ancyra.

Good luck NightAngel.

Save is here NA. (http://www.mediafire.com/?5hj1qqyhd5dh87a)

With regards to the war many Egyptians have died and we’re pushing southwards, the army that sat in our realms lies dead and a town haas been taken with some of the Egyptian royal family dying. The town however in now besieged.

I’m building an elite cavalry stable and I have secured an alliance an trade rights with the Macedonians, the closest post alone generates over 500 a turn by trading with Constantinople.

Everything is better and everything is worse.

We've built up a lot we have more armies a fleet of some sort and we've taken Antioch (hand grenade jokes welcome) But! and it's a big but, our alley in the east is dead and we are at war with Egypt, Armenia and now Greece. Why you may ask.

Well Greece was being so badly beaten on over in Greece proper they declared peace a figured we'd be fun to fight (just after we’d taken the mausoleum to). Armenia was Egypt’s ally so I guess this was inevitable.

On the plus again, we have bronze shields! On the sad again, cataphracts are terrifying.

So kids remember phalanxes are your friends and so are archers and chariot archers. Jus- just build them ok?

Also can I just send the save as an attachment or do I need to upload it some where?

We have lost no territory and gained three. Antioch, Tysas (the one just above) and the place with the Mausoleum.

Sorry about that, I've had to delay it for a bit. Will get started very soon but I've been a bit busy with work and university.

I'm looking at a start perhaps this weekend sometime, probably the Sunday afternoon after tennis. I'd like to do it tonight but I've got to get my stories together for my current affairs segment on the radio tomorrow.

Sorry it took me a while but I just thought I'd let you know, I finally started on it again the other day. Wow did that change a lot since my last go. We own most of Asia Minor now! :P

Anyway, not much has happened because I don't have much time, but I've taken two Armenian cities and lost two old Aigyptian ones to rebellions. :( Don't worry though, I have large armies on standby to retake them. ;)

Title: Re: Swap 2012

It was good fun.

I don't know why, but my save file appears to have been corrupted and sent me back to about my turn 2, so I played two more turns tonight. In the interest of getting it up off the ground again, here's my write-up so far. Note, my ability seems to have deteriorated a bit, so my generalship is a bit clunky. Still, I got the results, just with a few more dead men than I used to. :P

Quote
TURN 1
Inithimeus besieges Dumantha.
A bunch of stuff is built, usually in the Aigyption cities because of cultural strife.

TURN 2.
Sarduri is attacked by the Armenian Sknuxa. He thrashes them with few losses in a bridge battle. He goes on to besiege Seleucia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ininthimeus takes Dumantha with no difficulty.
Rioting sees Memphis and Thebes lost, but armies are strong in both areas so the rebels can be easily brought to heel.

TURN 3.
Light cavalry forces from Rhodes cross over to the mainland to take on a rebel force outside Halicarnassus. The garrison of the city sallies out as well. Casualties are light considering the ability of the troops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sarduri and Captain Cotys besiege Seleucia, but are wary of the massive army commanded by Menua of Armenia. Meanwhile Thothorses heads deeper into Armenia and Leucon besieges Kotais.

TURN 4.
Treachery! Outside the gates of Seleucia, Sarduri and Cotys are ambushed by an Armenian captain. The Pontics are severely outnumbered, but resolve to fight to the last rather than flee and be cut down separately. Strangely enough, the enemy reinforcements did not take the field before Sarduri had thoroughly demolished the forces of the Armenian captain.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rebels in Memphis sallied out against the Pontic forces gathered around which had been previously expelled. The rebels' numbers were greatly enhanced by the native Libyan tribesmen, so this would be a tough battle for the two Pontic captains. Memphis is eventually taken, though at a heavy cost in lives.

The rebels of Thebes rebel too, but the Pontic captain there, outnumbered more than four to one and without a great many phalanxes, retreats north. A rebel army follows him and engages him in combat, with far more even numbers. They are defeated handily.

Synges of Bithyniae marries into the family. Only Alexandria and Thebes are still in rebel hands, and Alexandria is besieged, although that army is only there as opportunistic scavengers as it were, rather than any real hope of taking the city, made up mainly of exiled Alexandrian peasants.

Sarduri and Captain Cotys actually make their assault on Seleucia, thinking to use Sarduri's catapults to smash their way through. The cost in lives is grievous, but they are successful.

I have not finished Turn 4 as I am undecided on whether or not to take Kotais yet. But I figured best to post this for incentive to continue it.
