Post your favourite playable faction from the vanilla RTW.
For me, tis Britannia!
-
No question; Carthage pwns all.
Mercs, Elepahnts, decnet inf and cav...
-
id say the brutii, good infantry, and have direct access to Greece, where fortunes are amde daily B)
-
Britannia. Head hurlers and chariots are made of nothing but awesome.

Lol :P

I voted Brutii, but it's a tie between them and Britons.
Macedon is fun though. As is Gaul.
-
RULE BRITANNIA!!
-
Britaaania ruules the waaves,
Briitons nevah nevah nevah
shaaal beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
(apologies, but this word was cut due to its potential political offensiveness to large multinational corporations who opress vast numbers of workers into barely-paid or unpaid labour. Multinational corporations are an important minority and in our umulticultural society we must make way for the view that human life is ultimately irrelevant unless it is the life of an ageing American multimillionaire in a cowboy hat. Advert paid for by an unknown donator, only known as GWB.)

Britannia
I just find patriotism fun
Especially when it includes pelting people with their mates heads
-
Greeks all the way, armored hops are all you willever need.
-
I love the Seluecids they have a great economy,Unmatched cavalry, phalanxes that will crush any army, and Elephants to top it all off!

w00t

I don't find hoplites flexible enough, in my brutii campaign, with a small army of 5 cavalry units i can mow down any larger hoplite army.
-
i do like having a solid army of roman cavalry and mowing down gauls
-
Wrong, all wrong! All of you.
It is obviously Parthia. The harsh men of the east know no bounds.
-
Parthia do own Romans well, not sure about Carthage.
-

Except the bounds of their purple pajamas that is...
I had to go with Carthage out of the list given (no Scythia). I love their Round Shields in the early game, then Sacred Band and Elephants in the late game. Plus they have those cool white outfits and moon symbols.

brutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutiibrutii
i want brutii
-
I like the brutti as well because with their starting position they become the strongest roman faction thanks to greeces rescources.
-
yay britannia is winning

I vote Parthia too, you can't mess with Horse archers :o
-
He has a point.
-
I've only played the Julii...
Just got the game though..
-
Voted for Carthage. I just love crushing the Roman factions one by one ... And there are many different unit types in their armies ... Great infantry, good horsemen and war elephants
-
Definitely the romans. The reasonably priced and quick to train legionary cohorts ensure victory in most situations, and when backed up with archers and mercenary cavalry make an excellent general purpose army. Once your empire gets to 30 provinces or so, the cash flow enables you to pump out cohorts. Brilliant.
-
as for Horse archers? You should have seen me destroy Jubal's with cataphracts. The armour renders their arrows helpless and they cant run away from other horses.
-
I do find that sending cavalry after horse archers doesn't always work, as the horse archers tend to be faster than the cavalry you send at them. I personally find foot archers to work well, as they have more bows per unit and thus are more lethal.
-
julii should be able to take down most people, they got close to free access to the entire north just because the gauls suck. If they get into war with the germans thats an entirely different story (that we will not go further in on)
-
Amusingly, the Gauls suckishness is realistic; they had far worse military capability than Roman or German counterparts at the time of RTW.

Seriously they suck beyond anything i have ever seen, if they just had one phalanx type unit then they would be one of the best teams. Also they can never win full stack fights :ermm:
-
THere should really be less phalanx fighting in RTW - and Phalangites should be less good, too. In reality, the legions could often take on a phalanx and have a reasonable chance of winning, certainly on uneven ground. Nevertheless, it's true that Gauls do suck.

That seems to be the case when I use Romans against phalangites. Which game have you been playing? :P
-
With early legions, head-on?
-
Well you don't just plow them right into their ranks, you gotta use some tactics. ;) The legion had better mobility which allowed it to envelop the more stationary phalanx from the flanks.
-
Ya, but in actuality on uneven ground a bunch of Hastati could have taken on a phalanx; anywhere htere was a slight gap due to undeven ground a legionary could've gotten in and seriously messed up the hoplites.
-
Why isn't Spain in the list? After all it can be playable. Their iberian infantry kicks ass!
-
Carthage get Iberians too - and personally I've never liked them much. Give me some Poeni inf or merc hoplites to hold the line and my longshields to do the damage.
-
Hoplites always kicked ass... They can crush both cavalry and infantry, defend walls and hold lines while attacking...
-

Lol, I was being sarcastic. I have not seen a good use for Iberian infantry until today, unless it is to spam it on Iberia.
I actually voted for Carthage. They suck bigtime in-game (campaign), which is why I always strive to get them the best on mods. Usually what defines wether I like a mod or not is the troop selection for Carthage.
Now that's being a fanboy :P I'm worse than the 10 year old MW2 players
-
Britons cause they got pretty much nothing going for them. They have no cavalry. And I don't like chariots.
It's like being vegetarian. Its easy to lose weight as a vegetarian cause there's crap-all to eat. And I don't like vegetables.
EDIT* Oh and Greeks, cause I like Armoured Hoplites. They're just made of all sorts of awesome.

There is no use for Iberian infantry. None. I once besieged a Roman city, got to the plaza easily before having 6 full units of Iberians (iirc) totally wiped out by something like a 14 man general's bodyguard. There were hardly any dead bodyguards at the end either...
Despite this I really like playing as Carthage. Like Jubal said, Poeni Infantry + Longshields :D .
-
I think I'd actually consider poeni, if they wouldn't get eaten up by pila so easily. Kill rates on vanilla are incredibly annoying. I actually have given up on vanilla, since the only really usefull unit is sacred band infantry (in the infantry section), which is totally unrealistic and not fun at all.
-
Britannia all the way!!!
For two reasons.
1. Patriotism
2. One time I was defending my homestead against the foul Romans who use their evil machinery to create a breach in the walls. The foolish Roman commander charged all his troops into the gap. Fortunately they were bottled in by some chosen swordsmen and I had 2 units of war hounds and 2 units of head hurlers nearby. As a result the entire Roman force mass routed and were promptly run down by my chariot warlord. Good times :D.
