Title: Civilisation II: War Of Realms
Post by: Jubal on December 25, 2012, 10:16:06 PM
A little Christmas present since I got bored.

War of Realms turns the classic game of Civilisation II into a more protracted struggle with more static technologies, pitching the player into a world of bitter hand to hand fighting, wall assaults, mountain pass defence, and much more defensible frontiers. Using the Civ II Extended memory patcher mountains are impassable, allowing much more realistic frontiers; only in the late game can they be opened up by tough mountaineer units, raided over by luftboats, or traversed by hardy explorers and adventurers. The static technology in the later game makes tactics, rather than a continual arms race, more important; with the attitude patch the factions will pursue slightly more realistic foreign policies. The new factions and units add both flavour and ways to exploit the new terrain rules.

You need Civilisation II to play this; it's now out of print, so you can try and find a second hand copy on Amazon or if you're feeling less righteous "abandonware" sites might have copies available. The mod contains a full readme.

Yeah, you need to make sure you're using the 32-bit not 16-bit version for most modern computers, then there's a 64-bit patch for the 32-bit one that makes it work properly.

I have a game of this running at the moment whilst feeling crap; it's a fun one, and I'm winning which is nice, I just expanded faster than anyone else. The rebels are also doing unusually well, there's a pirate island in the far northwest of the map with a fourth level town (which isn't huge, but is a reasonable size provincial settlement) and the whole island covered in pirate archers.  :)

Sounds like a fun conquest. :)

Uh! Nice stuffs. Sounds just like what I wanted! I hate how fast tech goes in civ2, and how there's no way of editing it (except real modding, but I've read that it's rather hard). How did you do it.

Sadly, I doubt I'll try it until December... I don't want to get addicted to any game right now, I just want to finish my Eastern Roman campaign in BI and fall back to more casual games like TF2 or something

Let me know when you do try it :)

I have so many other ideas for Civ2 mods that I have to stop myself going and making... :s

Well, at least you have the capability of actually executing the ideas that you have... I wish I had that.
