Title: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on January 25, 2013, 01:52:33 AM
If you want to help, this is the place to come. Basically say what skills you have (even if you write None, I can still find you things to do) and I try and find you things to do. Obviously being good at image editing, for example, is particularly helpful, but if you have time and can write stuff there's going to be a lot of text files, unit descriptions, etc to complete and the more other people can do those the more time I get to actually code fun stuff in.

Bloodied swords (aka people who have some direct text or otherwise contribution in the game code):
Jubal (team leader)
joek
TTG4
Whorefinger
Ezrael
Nickwizzo

As yet unbloodied swords:

I'm more than willing to help - the only problem is that I have no real artistic or programming ability and haven't played R:TW in years. I would love to see this happen, though, so if there's anything I can do / learn to do...

Firstly, welcome to Exilian everyone; do make yourself at home and poke around any of the rest of the site you wish to.  :)

Okay, the stuff which needs doing is often slightly dull and basically involves typing, the jobs I most need doing are as follows;

- Writing unit descriptions
- Writing building descriptions
- Getting the names file sorted so the family members aren't all called Antigonos and Vercingtorix and so on.
- Menu quotes, as you know the RTW loading screens all have menu quotes on. This should be a fun job, just going through "Overheard in..." and picking out the most quintessentially Cambridgeish entries

In each case I'll send you the files directly, all of them are .txts and have pretty intuitive structures which you'll just need to copy & continue. So... who volunteers for what?

*Is back*
*Pledges typing and code-monkeying abilities*
I have limited experience with a few scripting languages, so given a reasonably simple syntax I'm quite comfortable with messing around with python/lua/whatever TW uses files as well as simple txts, if necessary.

I guess I'll go for builings whenever we have a list of what we're doing for them.

OK, I'll just throw these things out here and anyone can grab anything.

MENU QUOTES
This is the file, basically just add new quotes with the current syntax, Quotes all in a list then authors - copy this into a text file probably. And remember to put each one on a separate line etc as shown or it won't work. This needs someone to go through "Overheard" and pick out the most quintessentially Cambridge quotes around.
Code: [Select]
¬ Localisation file for transition screen quotes
¬ Lines in brackets are not to be translated

{Quote_1}
Rise up, Sir Peter Wolf's-Bane. And, whatever happens, never forget to wipe your sword
{Quote_2}
Aslan is on the move. The Witch's magic is weakening

{Author_1}
Aslan
{Author_2}
Father Christmas

UNIT DESCRIPTIONS
Again, syntax is important, this is the code for an entry:

Code: [Select]
{arch_spearmen} Levied Spearmen

{arch_spearmen_descr}
In the defensive militias of Archenland, most soldiers are required to provide their own weapons and the most commonly seen weapon was the spear. The main reason for this is obvious; spears are almost ludicrously cheap and easy to make and are also very easy to use, at least when used as part of a loose, larger formation. While making a good halberd requires the skills of a true weaponsmith, anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of smithing and even the most primitive of forges can make perfectly adequate spears.

{arch_spearmen_descr_short}
Levy spearmen are sturdy troops with long spears to aid against cavalry charges.

It doesn't matter what you name the entry as an internal name, that's up to you - so the name in curly brackets then the name of the unit, the name plus "_descr" then a paragraph-long description starting on the next line, then "_descr_short" with a one sentence description on the next line. I'll keep the troop rosters thread updated with which ones we have - post any entries you make up here or in the troop thread inside "code" tags (on the panel above where you post it's the "#" button.

Right, I've grabbed the Menu quotes. I'll probably pop it up on github at some point if any of you use it, so more than just me can edit it...

Or you could post it here using the code tab like was mentioned by Jubal?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: joek on January 26, 2013, 05:21:38 PM
Well, I could, but this enables everyone to edit it at the same time. If you want to post other quotes here which can be added in, fine by me.
The other advantage is that code-tags swiftly become unreadable when the text gets really long...

I don't think so! I believe that the person with the appropriate privileges has to give any changes the go-ahead before they're made canon. It should be alright.

Yeah, for those of you not familiar with the github model, you can make changes on 'your' version of the document, and then submit pull requests to the master branch. Then I check them out, diff them, and if they look good, pull them into the master branch.

I don't mind starting to change all the names. Shall we use the names of current fellows or just names that sounds like they could be fellows?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on January 31, 2013, 10:33:30 AM
OK, so the names files are three, and they are thus (just sections of each file posted so you can get the hang of the syntax):

Names (this file basically gives the screen values of the internal names, the INTERNAL names are in brackets)
Code: [Select]
{Amulius} Amulius
{Augustus} Augustus
{Aulus} Aulus
{Caius} Caius
{Cassius} Cassius
{Cnaeus} Cnaeus
{Cornelius} Cornelius
{Decius} Decius
{Flavius} Flavius
{Gaius} Gaius
{Galerius} Galerius
{Gnaeus} Gnaeus
{Julianus} Julianus
{Kaeso} Kaeso
{Lentulus} Lentulus
{Luca} Luca
{Lucius} Lucius
{Manius} Manius
{Marcus} Marcus
{Nero} Nero
{Numerius} Numerius
{Oppius} Oppius
{Placus} Placus
{Publius} Publius
{Quintis} Quintis
{Quintus} Quintus
{Secundus} Secundus
{Servius} Servius
{Sextus} Sextus
{Sextius} Sextius
{Spurius} Spurius
{Tertius} Tertius
And so on.

Names lookup (This lists all the internal name values)
Code: [Select]
Amulius
Augustus
Aulus
Caius
Cassius
Cnaeus
Cornelius
Decius
Flavius
Gaius
Galerius
Gnaeus
Julianus
Kaeso
Lentulus
Luca
Lucius
Manius
Marcus
Nero
Numerius
Oppius
Placus
Publius
Quintis
Quintus
Secundus
Servius
Sextus
Sextius
Spurius
Tertius

Names descr (This gives particular names to particular factions, using the INTERNAL names. Each faction has an entry like this.)
Code: [Select]
faction: romans_julii

characters
Caspian
Florian
Rilian
Tirian
Octesian
Glozelle
Sopespian
Miraz
Bern
Rhoop
Mavramorn
Revilian
Argoz
Restimar
Alamar
Fulinar
Revilamar
Bernimorn
Suraz
Bernaz
Mirilan
Drinian

surnames
Acilius
Aelius
Aemilius
Afranius
Agricola
Albinus
Alfenius
Alienus
Ammianus
Ammonius
Annaeus
Annius

women
Prunaprismia
Julinia
Sara
Ourlice
Caspina
Renia
Qualmine
Sarapphine

The faction internal names are kept from RTW (I think they're changeable, but it would take forever and confer no benefit).

So the mapping is thus (the below are the correct/exact internal names):
thrace => The Entente
romans_julii => Sainsbury's Pact
romans_scipii => The Backs Alliance
romans_brutii => The Western Treaty
macedon => The Republic
greek_cities => The Hill Confederacy

There's no real rhyme or reason to this and I might shift things round later if we get to a stage where we want to take advantage of culture differences in city plans etc, but I'll take responsibility for crossing that rubicon as/when we get there.

I've pushed a few more quotes to the quotefile repo. We now have about 40...
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: nickwizzo on February 01, 2013, 10:32:57 AM
Got the files up and starting to edit. What sort of era are we going for? I've got a list of the top 200 male and female names in the US by decade and they go back to the 1880s, so I was thinking of starting there?

Also, should there be differences between the names of the factions? Should all the names be English?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on February 01, 2013, 11:22:30 AM
I think all the faction names should probably be fairly similar - obviously there are quite a lot of non-English fellows so I don't see any particular reason for sticking to English only names.
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: nickwizzo on February 01, 2013, 11:29:42 AM
My only thought is that we may end up with some unlikely fellows. Does the game pick a random surname and a random first name from the faction lists? If it picks a surname and first name which are from different origins it could look a bit bizarre, especially if it then doesn't match with the picture either.
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on February 01, 2013, 11:34:10 AM
To be fair, we have a lot of fellows whose names do differ (I cite David Abulafia and Magnus Ryan from my own department).

I think we may have to restrict fellows to being all-male, though, sadly. Yeah, it could look bizarre but I'm not overly concerned about this, the mod is intended to be more than a little whimsical.
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: TTG4 on February 01, 2013, 11:42:41 AM
No boudicca-esque charges for us then! I guess female fellows would marry 'garrison commanders' from vanilla, perhaps we could re-name them post-docs?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on February 01, 2013, 12:03:18 PM
Yeah, because it works on a family tree there's no way of stipulating that some commanders are male and some female.
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Jubal on February 01, 2013, 01:31:39 PM
OK, we also need to start thinking about buildings. They basically work the same way as troops, but we're using a lot of the old internal buildings because buildings are complex and go wrong easily. For that reason, I'm not going to get you guys to put it in the right syntax, I just want the descriptions which I can copypaste in.

Soooo I need long and short descriptions (and names) for the following...

College buildings (formerly the barracks line) 5 levels (thinking lowest will be accomodation block maybe?) These will train basic students and college staff such as porters etc.

Arts buildings (formerly the cav buildings) 4 levels, will train all arts-side students
Science buildings (formerly the missile buildings) 4 levels, will train all science-side students

Also, the core buildings that determine the size of the site/college (5 levels)

Ports 3 levels

Farms, roads, and mines (5, 3, 2 levels respectively) all need replacement versions as they're hardcoded too.

The other buildings (markets, temples etc) we'll want replacements for but we can afford to think more creatively about what other improvements we should have and how people should get those bonuses. Remember that a building doesn't have to be a building, it can be a concept or idea advance. And there will be some localised buildings (different levels of Sainsbury's, for example, and possibly the trailer of life/van of death at the marketplace if I can think of a suitable bonus).

Perhaps something similar to the academies in the form of libraries?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: nickwizzo on February 01, 2013, 05:42:29 PM
Ok, all name files done. All factions have the same name list, but there are well over 100 of each type, so shouldn't get many repeats. They're very long, where should I post them?

For roads, perhaps gravel path -> cobbled path -> paved path.

There could be a trait fellows gain called 'Walk on the grass' with a 10% movement bonus?

Mines could be supply tunnels perhaps? And will things like blacksmiths be area-restricted e.g. you can only upgrade weapons in the Science departments?

I was thinking mines = wine cellars?

Liking the library/academy and Bar/bop/may ball ideas too - again, if you guys do the flavour text I'll get the code done.

Traits are a whole other kettle of fish, I'm thinking that'll be late in the process if at all (unless someone wants to learn them and take charge of that). To put it another way, I never got round to doing traits for Warhammer and Narnia properly and I've been working on them for years.

Nick, attack them to a post in a zip file on here?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread

Well if I come up with any interesting traits/have anyone else suggest them I'll set up a suggestions thread for that so it doesn't clog up the nitty gritty.
Wine cellars sounds better to me, good call. Farms could be butteries, since they're all about food production?

Yep, that does seem to be a pretty good guide.

Traits themselves aren't too bad, I've never really gotten my head around the triggers system though. I suspect it wouldn't be at all impossible, it's just not part of my personal skillset in this.

I've got 3 stages of the "Walks On The Grass" trait working fine in Rome. Just need to decide on the percentage chance of anyone getting it and how soon into the game they're allowed to get it.

I'm thinking of creating a complimentary trait of 3 stages of hungover, with reduced movement points. Maybe renaming some of the other traits eg. A high level of influence could be a BNOC, less influence swap organiser. Someone could be a Cindies veteran instead of a veteran of many battles etc. Renaming existing traits is much quicker and easier than creating new ones. Thoughts?
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: Ezrael on February 03, 2013, 09:12:41 AM
Those sound good. Of course, not all traits would need to be renamed e.g. Good Attacker/Defender.
Title: Re: The "I Pledge Thee My Sword" thread
Post by: nickwizzo on February 03, 2013, 10:11:09 AM
Of course, there are plenty of traits which will stay exactly the same but it would be nice to have the rest as Cambridge inspired as possible.

Might it be an idea to host all the various .txt files on GitHub? It would speed things up and allow those without copies of the game (e.g. me :'( ) to contribute to trait files etc. that they won't have access to otherwise.

OK, so which files do we need? Unit descriptions I think it's easier just to post up one by one, so:
descr_buildings (building descriptions)
menu quotes (though those are nearly done)
The traits files (can't remember which/how many there are)
?

Part of the trouble is that a lot of files have easy hissy-fits and so it's best to literally test after each and every edit, which is why I'm less keen to Github the whole thing - bugchecking/fixing can take me longer than doing it myself.

In terms of names: the names files were just not working, I don't know why but what I've done is reverted to the original RTW ones, given all six factions the original Julii name list, and then I'm working on putting Nick's names over the originals in the output (names.txt) file only, so the internal names are unchanged. I've thrown a bunch of bugcheckers at Nick's files but not come up with anything, so a large amount of painful debugging and testing would probably take me longer than this strategy. I'll take over on that from now on anyway.

If anyone has time, unit descriptions would probably be highest on my wish-list right now. Also, what ideas do we have for the symbols & flags for the six factions?

So I was, as the name suggests, the guy who came up with the concept in Hometon and put it on Overheard over a month ago now and I would like to help over Easter if I can. Not too much because I've got film editing to do but if I can help write up descriptions (nothing technical) then I'd love to.

It's great to see people so invested in what is a very fun concept :)

I think we are missing a certain very important quote from the former Archbishop of Canterbury, or variations thereof.

Well, that IS rather new

And I was suggesting that that would be a good thing to the quote file.
If possible of course.

Hey, coming to this late. I have no skills but those of an English teacher, so I'm happy to help writing descriptions etc.

Awesome, welcome on board; basically take a look at the threads where people are doing descriptions and get stuck in, I'm keeping fairly up to date lists of what we need.  :)

Just yell if you want me to do anything. You already know my lack of skill at everything, Jubal. :P

What's the next priority?

Tidying up and releasing, I think, but that may be after prelims (which are 23rd/24th).

Are we releasing during the next term or leaving it until after all exams are finished with?

I'm a first year historian, so I finish prelims by the end of next week, after which I will have tons of time (comparatively) to tidy it up and release it.  :)

Well, I go straight back into regular lectures and stuff, but exams are over so I will have the same amount of time I did last term.

Crossed fingers etc. :S

Hey
Noticed that the shared file in the data/text folder had some mistakes, preventing the abilities at a glance from working.  Have fixed mine, is there anywhere that updated files can be collated?  Such as fixes you guys have made since release?

Probably email it to me, james[at]wavcott[dot]org[dot]uk, and I'll make sure it's in the next patch/release.  :)

Many thanks!
