Title: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: Jubal on November 15, 2013, 12:30:57 AM
Whovianism abound!

The 50th anniversary is coming up! Speculate and stuff here!

And if you haven't done so, watch as the eighth doctor gets literally only his second ever visual episode...

Seems pretty straightforward; 8th realizes he needs to do something, becomes "War Doctor", who <--heh does what he has to do in the Time War, then turns into our old sad #9.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't considerably more of a plot twist than that somewhere. :P

I approve this statement, bananas and all. I heard he left on bad terms though so I wasn't expecting him to be, but his absence was noticed :(

EDIT: also, the next episode sounds amazing!

2nd EDIT: Anyone else think that the budget for that anniversary episode must have been a whole series worth at the very least? SFX were much better quality than usual and it really showed by good use of the extra money, props to the... producer(?).

Also, my take on the probable chronology, since that was skirted round/over rather:

- Time War happens, spreads across space & time; the Time Lords with TARDISes command one side and increasingly have an iron grip over their allies, the Daleks & slaves on the other.
- The Last Days essentially begin once the Dalek and Time Lord time technologies cancel one another out; all of the TARDIS fleet is either destroyed or preventing further Dalek reinforcements arriving temporally/attacking Gallifrey at a less developed point, channelling the Daleks towards a Gallifrey that has had the maximum possible time to prepare (with the Daleks having done the reverse, trying to attack Gallifrey as early as possible)
- Daleks shoot stuff up
- Events of The End of Time happen, final sanction fails. Rassilon killed/knocked down by Master, unknown occurrences in high council
- War room general as seen in this episode takes temporary command; the high council may well still be in utter turmoil but someone has to command the troops
- Amid the confusion after the rapid teleportation/return of Gallifrey, Arcadia's sky trenches fall to the Daleks
- The War Doctor shoots his message into the wall, start of Day of the Doctor
- Episode happens up until eleven comes up with the plan (that was unwittingly given to him by the Zygons)
- Eleven writes the relevant calculation subroutine
- Moment inserts calculation subroutine into computer of the first doctor's TARDIS
- On last day of Time War, Moment time-holes all the other TARDISes (or at least the first thirteen)
- The Doctors copy the subroutine (which may even have only finished calculating by mid-13, which would explain only using the first 13) back onto all 13 TARDISes, at which point
- the power of the TARDISes powers "the plan"
- The Dalek battle fleets blow themselves to pieces, excepting the Imperial Ship (which is later destroyed by Rose) and probably excepting large numbers of Dalek ground forces across the Empire, who without a command structure are defeated within a generation or so (this conveniently explains why they keep popping up).
- Ta-da.

My dear fellow, you're speaking (or to be accurate typing) to a man who can be credited with multiple thousands of words on the subject of the socio-economic condition of the dwarfs in Middle-Earth. Spatial and temporal over-analysis is the sea I swim in and the air I breathe. Historian, after all.  :P

Title: Re: The Who Anniversary Thread
Post by: Silver Wolf on December 24, 2013, 03:27:40 PM
Why so?  :(

I started watching Doctor Who back when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor.
I've also seen a lot of Tennant's episodes.
But Doctor Who was always always just another show which I would watch now and then when I had nothing else to do. Nothing special.

Matt Smith and Karen Gilllian made me love the new series.
I've seen every episode at least two or three times.

And I'm sure that Capaldi won't be as good as Matt.

CG: I thought the same about the face!

SW: I am sure Capaldi will be very different to Smith, but I think I'm going to like him more. It'll be nice to have a Doctor who is a bit less touchy-feely, I reckon.

The only two TV shows I've liked so far are Angel and Doctor Who (11th Doctor only).

- The cameo for Amy was cute but actually got in the way of the Doctor's last words and cut the power out of them a bit I felt. I think leaving the scene up to Clara and the Doctor at least so far as speaking roles were concerned would have worked better.

Anyways, this is a part where I disagree with you the most.
I think that this part was perfect. He said all that needs to be said and returned to one of his earliest memories.
Words have the tendency to ruin the moment. Even though Matt had the best speeches of them all.
Sometimes silence speaks volumes. Especially when it comes from a man who talks all the time. This was one of those times.

Also did anyone else notice the Rings of Akhaten theme ("Take my memories") in the background? Perfect.

Goodnight, raggedy man.
Wake up, Doctor.

And to be quite honest, I expected something different from Capaldi.
Something like : "Oh my fu**ing kidney." or "Can you fly this fu**ing piece of sh*t?".

Yeah, I don't know if Clara will stick around for more than another series tops. That said, if he's a bit sharper/nastier than Eleven he might need a companion who does the sappy stuff more?

http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/jul/27/peter-capaldi-doctor-who-no-flirting-sidekick-coleman-new-series

Quote
Incoming Doctor Who Peter Capaldi has revealed there will be no flirting with co-star Jenna Coleman in the new series.

The previous Doctor was engaged in a close relationship with his sidekick Clara that even led to a passionate kiss.

But Capaldi, 56, insisted his Time Lord would not be following in Matt Smith's footsteps by getting intimate with 28-year-old Coleman's character.

Hallelujah!

Interesting. I personally wasn't a huge fan of Matt Smith. I watched every series, but i didn't like how silly he was all the time, and it really annoyed me how he could shift from being a joker to a serious dude. When he threw the silliness aside for certain episodes i loved it though and he was an amazing actor.
Peter Capaldi looks like a far more serious doctor, which i love. My favourite Doctor of the new series is Eccleston because of his darker edge.

I've just seen the new episode and I must say that I'm underwhelmed.

Capaldi was my favourite thing in the episode, I really hope they follow the whole morality issue they have going there. Vastra(?) and Jenny were a bit over the top on the whole married thing, it used to be subtle but not so much there. I also enjoyed Clara gaining some character, rather than just being a pretty face.
Title: Re: The Who Discussion Thread

I think Capaldi will be great; the grittier side in his duel with the cyborg thing was very good fun.

The whole "he's not your boyfriend/I'm not your boyfriend" stuff took up too much of the episode.

The new credits are AWESOME.

I was doubtful Capaldi would work, but I like the direction they've taken it in. I did make the mistake of binge-watching the thick of it a few weeks before the new series started and I'm still expecting him to threaten to put someones balls in a vice, but he's carried over the ruthless streak from his previous characters which he does REALLY well.

Why would it want to do that? It was being forced to do that on the threat of its only mate being killed, whilst being driven nuts through continual abuse.

I mean, if you'd been abused to the point of madness and were forced into my house on the threat of all your loved ones being killed, I'd be quite terrified - doesn't mean I have any issue with you under normal circumstances!

It wasn't made clear if it was an eating method or defence mechanism. I'd suggest the latter, or at least a doubled up defence/attack mechanism that could stall and capture prey or predator alike (though again, even if it was an eating method, to extend my above analogy technically I'm edible by your natural eating method, but I still trust you not to go cannibal :P )

I dunno, I like that it was a bit more character driven and took another angle on the doctor/companion relationship, they need a bit of that every once in a while.

I think CG meant Pink not the Doctor. And whilst it is weird when he's too nice guy, there's a middle road - he's best when he keeps a certain gravitas and doesn't go too aggressively nasty/gutter insulting.

(No idea where this should go)

Is it just me or is The Master (as played by John Simm)
just Moriarty before Moriarty was 'cool'? (BBC's Sherlock)

Meaning the character's personality etc.?

Thoughts on Kill The Moon? Personally I enjoyed it, although a lot of other people were bothered by the bad science.
Title: Re: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: Jubal on October 06, 2014, 08:01:10 PM
Science was awful, episode framing was really quite offensive for a lot of people (though unintentionally so, it was still sufficiently obvious someone should've picked it up).

The pacing, acting, etc were all good; they just needed to edit about 20 lines of dialogue to rephrase the dilemma. Not least because Clara morally made the WRONG CHOICE, given the way they phrased the problem. The life of a foetus is not worth more than the lives of millions of humans. Even if the foetus is a moon dragon.

To repost what I put on FB it would've been very possible, within the framework of the story, to fix most of these problems just by framing it differently.

- Crazy moon shenanigans observed on earth (Same)
- They send up astronauts, with bombs just in case (Same)
- The moon is an egg (same)
- Actually it hatching won't make bigger tides (once it's gone the tides will be smaller, so leaving the mass there and killing it would actually have kept the tides excessively big), and the shell, being so much lighter than the creature, should have gravitationally stuck to it anyway to begin with. So in a slightly more sensible version humanity isn't much at threat from this except possibly from longer term climatic destabilisations.
- The earth government decide to blow up the creature ANYWAY in case it's going to come down and eat humanity or some such. And the Doctor buggers off and various scientists argue either way and dilemma again.
- And voila, instead of "is it OK to kill a foetus to save humanity" (yes), we have "is it OK to assume a newborn baby is going to be evil when we don't even know its species" (no), and thus you have the same dilemma problem where Clara's decision makes a lot more sense.

But as it was, the episode just had severe problems. Still marginally better than The Caretaker, but second weakest of the series IMO.
Title: Re: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: Othko97 on October 06, 2014, 08:21:43 PM
Yeah, that would have made more sense. I must admit I'm not a fan of the fact there are no negative repercussions to Clara's decision, but that seems to be something which has been a trend for the last few seasons.

CG is correct - I think Capaldi at his best has been stunning, but the scriptwriting just hasn't done him justice. The production and acting have been excellent, some of the concepts have been good, but lately the scripting and plotwriting has let him down.

Title: Re: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: Lady Grey on October 08, 2014, 08:01:05 PM
I must admit, we've not watched this series and a lot of the previous series, but this is because (and this could be the problem) we think Moffat has... lost it... with Doctor Who.
He's a fantastic writer for Sherlock (give or take a few things I'm not a big fan of) but I'm not sure about Doctor Who anymore.
I also think he doesn't write women particularly well.
Title: Re: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: Lady Grey on October 08, 2014, 08:03:15 PM
I don't know what the Gallifrey stuff is about (obviously) but one of the problems I had was the overly complicated for-no-apparent-reason writing.
Like everything was trying to be tied together, and it didn't need to be? Don't know if that makes sense?
Title: Re: The Grand Who Chatter & Discussion Thread
Post by: TTG4 on October 08, 2014, 09:03:41 PM
Hermione Norris and Peter Capaldi in the same episode, that should have been a lot better than it was. I won't start fact-bashing or I'll be here all night. Also, I get that it's a family show and so can't go too dark, but the dragon thing laying another egg just sends completely the wrong message in my view. I think I agree about writing women, they all seem to just be there to fill a plot role, rather than to be a character in their own right.

In case anyone doesn't know, Capaldi played a foul mouthed political spin doctor before moving in as Dr Who, this guy has cut dialogue from that into clips from doctor who.

NSFW, obviously.

He still calls himself the last of his species even though he knows he saved Gallifrey. I don't like the anachronistic writing.

Also the Missy stuff at the end of the episodes is a very lazy way to create an arc. "Okay episode's over, oh right, there's an unrelated story arc so here's a quick Missy scene."

He's the only one of his species in the known and currently existent universe, to be fair, but I see/take the point.

And yes, the arc has been set up lazily but I'm hopeful for the series ending - mostly that Osgood seems to be reappearing and she was awesome in Day of the Doctor.  :)

Minus side, I wanted it to be the Rani.

Plot was fairly standard but actually pretty well executed I thought, I think the next episode should crank up to something much more exciting. Overall I was pleased with the episode, it wasn't as glorious as something like Time Heist but it was a pretty solid performance.

Having found out who the Rani is, I agree that would have been fun, but bringing the master back in is also a decent idea, and shows the idea that a time lord's sex isn't fixed.

I agree this episode was a bit lacklustre, but it'll be interesting to see what route they take the Danny-Clara relationship down, since he's stuck in thing that's running the cybermen.

Yeah, it wasn't a great ending - I think Moffat is really running down the clock on how long until he wholly runs out of ideas, the really good stuff this series (TH, Mummy, Flatline) has been in the form of standalone episodes that weren't by him.

And the Christmas special does look like it will be cripplingly cringeworthy.

I think there are three episodes in the rest of the series that are worth watching:
- Time Heist
- Mummy on the Orient Express
- Flatline

I think all three are pretty good one-shot episodes that are worth it; Time Heist is one of my favourite DW episodes ever, it's a really neat self-contained story. :)

I really don't see how Time Heist can be considered worse than, say, Nightmare in Silver.

The surrounding character stuff in this series was kinda naff, but Time Heist had relatively little of that and a really neat plot.

I think some of 12 has been badly written, but some of it has also been some of the best DW I've watched. Smith was definitely a bit more fun on a regular basis, but when Capaldi really hits his stride as an actor he just carries things on screen in a way Matt Smith never quite had the gravitas to pull off.
