Anyone have a solution to my great conundrum? Apart from my current solution.

Only if he inherited his hair colour from his father rather than his mother. The Targaryens were only guaranteed those particular features because they always screwed their siblings, both of whom had the relevant genes.

Nope, but I get to lead the children around and lift them back when they decide to sneak under the fence and stick their fingers into the wolf cage (P.S. I'm not portugaling kidding)...

Besides, the wolves seem to like me. They always gather around the fence when I'm around them. Then we just stare at each other.

I get to pet the dromedary camels, though.

I'm considering making a 2 headed spear just for fun.

Right now I think that the best option would be 2 long bladed hewing spearheads.

Do you have a forge handy?
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: Silver Wolf on June 22, 2014, 05:17:24 PM
I have an anvil and loads of scrap metal. And a fireplace.

But I would probably need a furnace.
I have a courtyard for that.

But I don't have the skill needed to forge a proper functional spear.
I could try and I bet it would look good and the whole process would be fun, but the spear head itself wouldn't be really useful in the end.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: Silver Wolf on June 23, 2014, 04:34:30 PM
After taking a look I figured out that I'll make an ordinary spear instead.

I made up my mind after watching some wushu videos on youtube.
Even in the hands of Bruce Lee a double headed spear looks underwhelming.
Kind of an all show and no go weapon. Very interesting and good for practicing dexterity, but almost useless as a weapon.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: comrade_general on June 23, 2014, 04:46:34 PM
Hoplite spear?
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: Silver Wolf on June 23, 2014, 04:50:43 PM
Dory? Perhaps.
But it's not really what I'm looking for. The butt-spike on a dory is used for a different purpose than the one I had in mind.
And then there's xyston, but it's cavalry spear, and the other point was probably used just as counterweight and a backup if the first tip breaks.

I wanted a proper two headed spear which gives you a nice flow of motion, like a staff.
But that kind of fighting style is situational at best.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: comrade_general on June 23, 2014, 04:56:24 PM
Oberyn much? ;)
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Hodor
Post by: Silver Wolf on June 23, 2014, 05:02:38 PM
He wields a one handed spear. :D
But I must admit, that's what made me think about trying to forge something.
The choice of the fighting style was mostly because of Shaolin monks, though.

And I've always wanted to forge something, since I have all the needed equipment.
I figured out a spear/arrow head would be the best choice for a starter.

- - -

Edit: When I think about it, they may have used wushu in Oberyn's fight scene.

Well, basically turnout was crap, feedback responses mostly were good though and financially people were pretty willing to shell out so it looks like something we could have a go at again. We'd probably need to really crack the advertising game to make it worth it though.

I enjoyed myself at least, and I think quite a few people made new friends etc which was good :)

The main body of the email says: "Jo sometimes offered her own view from time to time. Florence with the intention of using Elsa's trust fund to study art.
The wind and dust of a thousand miles. Turnpike switched to a coin system in 1991."

What does it all mean?? :o

Kandrobears are an extinct species of flying pig-bears once native to the island of Norfolk. They were eradicated by residents currently living in and around Norfolk because they were "tired of the buzzing".

I don't know - I'm back, so we might just pip that particular post!

Also, aren't Kandrobears officially classified as an endangered species, rather than extinct?

Either way, you might not want to be hunting them Joob, unless you want the RSPCA, WWF or PETA sending you hurtful letters.

It's good to be back! Everything in my life is going tickety-boo right now.

I even have a girlfriend!

Besides, those Kandrobears are starting to un-nerve me a little bit. Thought I'd stay in the company of people who know about them.

Yes - the CU Doctor Who Soc is having its first General Meeting rather belatedly tomorrow evening, and I seem to be in charge of making sure that things happen according to some vague plan (I initially wrote that sentence as "some divine plan", then realised that we didn't have one of those and that the plan was wholly mine, and amended it suitably...)

I agree with the pangolin. And in fact I plan to disregard much wealth in favour of a book later because Patrick Rothozilla has a new book out (not the end of his trilogy sadly, but it sounds like an awesome thing.)
Also I went out last night except I didn't quite go out. Was drinking at my friends from 6 (he fed me steak and mash, much happiness) and was wasted by about 9 when we went to pick his girlfriend up from the train station. Unfortunately I was nearly out cider by this point so I decided to buy some more and since there was no cheap cider in the shop I went for cheap ginger wine. It doesn't mix well with cider, apparently I fell asleep on my mates sofa and then chundered in his sink when I woke up. No idea what time I got home but this must have all been pretty early. At least I was apparently well behaved before spewing.

Something a bit random I happened across today: a web version of Spirograph (http://nathanfriend.io/inspirograph/). I had a physical version as a child, but I gave it up before I understood the maths of how it works. Now it all makes much more sense :)
The web version also has the advantages that you don't have to pin pieces down to a board, and you can't accidentally jog the moving gear out of the stationary one!

Those who are permitted to have enough contact with the outside world probably do. However, the Supreme Leader also seems to be the closest thing we've seen to a divine ruler since probably the Pharaohs, so it's unlikely that people who know what the rest of the world thinks of him will point this out.

There's a firework display going on somewhere in Cambridge at the moment: I can hear it, but not see it from where I am. Either their calendar is a day or so fast, or there's a special event happening that I'm not aware of. Or someone has decided it's time to suppress the evil free-thinking subversives (we even voted in favour of proportional representation!), and the artillery attack has started...
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the festive season
Post by: Jubal on December 30, 2014, 09:43:44 PM
Technically AV isn't proportional, of course: Cambridge has never had a chance to vote in favour of proportional representation (though I have no doubt that it would vote in favour of that if it were given the chance).
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the festive season
Post by: Glaurung on December 30, 2014, 10:42:51 PM
Point taken; I had forgotten the electoral system that the referendum provided for. At least AV is more proportional than first-past-the-post.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the festive season
Post by: Jubal on December 30, 2014, 11:39:57 PM
In general, though I believe it *can* be less proportional in some circumstances. Can't remember the maths though.

Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the festive season
Post by: Silver Wolf on February 21, 2015, 01:39:45 PM
Probably the second, even though I have some Austrian/German blood from the other side of family.

My grandfather died in 1969. so neither my father nor I got to hear much about our history.
So how we got this remains a mystery.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the festive season

I know a reasonable amount about my family history, but it's pretty much solid English peasantry along most lines - the Scots side might be more interesting but I know less about that than any others, I think my great-great Grandfather was estranged from his family which rather cut off some roots.

OK, that should be a good time: nice and warm but hopefully not too hot.

There's a vast amount of history, architecture and art. If it's important to you to see particular things, I recommend doing some research to work out what's where, when it's open, and how to fit it all in. If you prefer to wander, soak up the atmosphere and be surprised, then that's very easy too.

In Rome? Really? No way. :P

Definitely will do some wandering, but must see the primary old world stuff (Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, etc.) which are somewhat in a straight line from our hotel. Though about renting a car for a few days and just cruising around the countryside as well.

Someone just managed to link me to an article that was on "5 ways feminists are literally Nazis".

It was possibly the most historically and factually inaccurate piece of crap I've read in a very long time.

I am feeling quite cross with the world now.

(For anyone interested, way 1 was taking some nutter (or more likely parody) who claimed to believe in a blogpost once that men should be wiped out, and then claiming this was somehow symptomatic of a wider problem, way 2 was claiming that abortion was murder, way 3 was the "you're hating on men for NO REASON by suggesting they need to be educated about sexual consent", way 4 was "you're discussing things that happen in the US and UK therefore you clearly don't care about problems in the middle east therefore you're a white supremacist therefore you're a nazi" and way 5 was "they control all the media. ALL THE MEDIA." I really hope I don't have to explain why any of those are totally portugaling stupid points. I am not happy.)

I'm contemplating stopping drinking over easter, took a train down to edinburgh on friday night with a bottle of captains as company. Was only planning on drinking a little bit, didn't really take note of how much I was drinking and I can't even remember getting off the train. Not that I missed much, the girls I was visiting were already back home for the night as they were looking after a chundering norwegian. Still, quite a big waste of rum and liver points.

Galaxy Quest! (http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/21/8463671/galaxy-quest-tv-show)

They should've done this when the original cast were still young enough, but maybe they can still pull it off. :P

Still wish we could see a decent prime-universe Star Trek series again though.

I feel like we're at a stage where any net advances the Tories make will be counteracted by the fact those won't get to most people, and that some people will suffer very, very heavily. We're walking into a disaster for civil liberties too; I'd be surprised if Net neutrality survives to 2020, the Human Rights Act is pretty much dead in the water already, etc.

Though I guess in this case, even disregarding all that, I can take the (unusual for me) position of arguing from self-interest. The humanities are an extremely soft target for cutbacks and the government has set itself cutting targets that will be almost impossible to meet, and I've not got a primary skillset that is likely to work well in much of the private sector. Of course I've got some fallback skills, but given the current state of the creative industries it's a total jackal-fight to be able to make any money from it. Very likely to hit the rest of my family too, we're all academics and thus all indirectly funded by the state.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - Welcome to the doom season
Post by: Clockwork on May 11, 2015, 06:13:20 PM
Its better that some suffer than all suffer under a collapsed economy surely? And heavily? I don't believe so, minimum wage has been rising, as has real income. Net neutrality I think they'll be persuaded not to pursue. The Human Rights Act is being superseded by a British Bill of Rights. It'll amount to the same thing but the power over it, to change it, etc will be held by the British government instead of a European one. It's not like once HRA is gone, nobody here will have any human rights. The change is minor, just a change of signatures tbh.

Right Economics creates jobs in the private sector, these aren't paid for by the government who then in turn can spend money they're not paying workers on things like healthcare or roads or whatever. Left Eco creates jobs in the public sector funded by the government on the backs of the most sucessful members of society. As we've seen a lot recently, those people aren't too keen on that and bugger off to the Cayman islands or something and then the country is paying for things they now can't afford because their moneybags have left.

As a side note: the current state of creative industries is good actually, it's been growing solidly for years and looks like it will continue to grow. (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/394668/Creative_Industries_Economic_Estimates_-_January_2015.pdf)

Can we keep politics to the politics section? Whilst I appreciate I brought it up to some extent, it's something I need to not think about right now. As usual I disagree with your shorthand of economic ideas, and I think it's horribly oversimplified, but as of now I feel like living armadilloe and am really not in a good state for arguing over this. Sorry.

Suffice to say that I do not feel the world is in a good place at present, and I feel like my own world is in a particularly not-good place in relation to it.

No matter what your political leanings may be there will always be weird gifs on the internet and cat pictures and stuff and the sun will occasionally shine and so on and so forth.
My exams finish soon and then I can get drunk and plan what I'm doing for the summer and not feel like I should be studying and wooo.

Okay guys, it's time to share this:

My project got a green light on ModDB.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/shivering-isles-the-march-of-order

I've been working on it (and another project which still remains secret) for more than a year now and I'm finally getting comfortable with the amount of work behind me.
The reason I've posted is to keep myself active and motivated since I've already put a lot of hours into this and it would be a shame if those hours were wasted.
The work has been slow and I'm planing to kick it up a notch next month.

Keep your fingers crossed, people.

I've seen Mad Max: Fury road & Jurassic world at a local cinema.

I wasn't expecting much from Mad Max. The reviewers were praising it all time and I didn't want to end up being disappointed. But the movie was truly awesome. I suggest watching it in a cinema for the full experience.

Jurassic world is just mediocre from my point of view. You can spot every single part of the whole plot from a mile away.

My Grandpa's operation was fairly successful which is a relief, and he's breathing a lot better (as you might expect with an extra litre of air available in his lungs). They'll probably need to do it again in future though; they don't seem to know how to tackle the initial fluid buildup.

Good news guys.

I'm still managing to stay in the upper part of top 100 mods most of the time, and I have around 120 followers right now.

I'll see what I can do to introduce some of those people to Exilian next week. ;D
Probably in some sort of an article or "follow on Exilian for more information" kind of thing.

Indeed, that seems to be the thinking this month. I suspect some of them are updates to updates.

I'm extremely tired and have dropped the ball on everything and am feeling bad about it :/
Try not to feel bad about it - you're allowed to have days off, and in fact after the last six months or so you probably need quite a lot of them. OK, it helps if you can plan them in advance, but sometimes they just happen.

Jubal: I hope you enjoy the folk music and socialising, and that it all turns out not to be scary.

In other news, Limerick city centre on a wet Saturday night is not much fun. However, I found a limerick about limericks in Limerick, so this makes up somewhat for getting soaked.

Here it is, something I hadn't really thought about until a few days ago: my thousandth Exilian post. Coincidentally, tomorrow is the first anniversary of me joining Exilian. It's been quite an eventful year: becoming a citizen, and then an admin, with an assortment of constitutional changes along the way, and the long struggle to get a bank account. It's been fun (perhaps apart from the bank bit); many thanks to all of you, and I'm looking forward to the coming year!

To save telling everyone individually - I am going to start doing an MRes at the University of Birmingham later this month, I got my official offer through today. There will be a big city, there will be a James, there will be Byzantines and Trapezuntines and Georgians, there will be Exilian, there will be radical liberalism, there will be storytelling, there will almost certainly be dwarves who may or may not be excavating pits and singing about it. There will probably not be a guanaco but I make no promises on that front.  :)

As a complete non sequitur after the assorted camelids, I've just worked out the Vatican City pope density. It's about 5.8 per square mile. I thought you should all know this :P

Sorry. It's not a joke; the phrase "Vatican City pope density" is a little bit of eccentricity shared with friends. There is one pope (excluding "Pope Emeritus" as a difficult case), resident in the Vatican City; the area of the Vatican City state is 110 acres, which equals 0.17 square miles. Hence the pope density is 1/0.17 = 5.8 popes per square mile.

It's much higher than the global pope density.

I don't have a problem with the nude decision. I have a problem with filtering other content because it doesn't agree with a certain political agenda. That's the whole point of free speech.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - These Are Not The Potatoes You Are Looking For
Post by: Jubal on November 23, 2015, 03:05:15 PM
Re picture thread? I wasn't filtering it, I was asking people to think about whether what they were posting was making people feel welcome. The point of free speech is that you're allowed to say what you like, and that I'm allowed to exercise my own free speech to question those choices. I'm not going to stop anyone posting that sort of thing, as I repeatedly and abundantly made clear, but freedom of speech includes the right for me, as long as I'm not stopping anyone doing anything, to criticise how other people use their free speech and vice versa. Freedom of speech means freedom from censorship, it doesn't mean freedom from criticism.

As it is, I think several people have made their feelings clear, and I think in future I'll probably just try and steer clear of some of these threads and bits of the forum where I don't feel at home any more.

I'm writing this wearing my Admin hat, hence the colour, or possibly my slightly grumpy old man hat. I haven't had to do this before, and I would like not to have to do this again.

Anyway, I came home from a day's work to find the preceding string of unhappy posts in this thread, and a few more dotted around elsewhere. I consider all the participants to be friends of mine; I think you're all friends with each other, mostly for far longer than I have known you, but if the current exchange continues then I fear you will not stay that way.

Therefore, I would appeal to you all to leave this subject alone for a day or two. I sense quite a lot of hurt and anger here, on all sides, and I think it would be good for people to step back for a while. We should probably have a discussion on freedom of speech, offensiveness, hurtfulness, and responsibility, but it's not this discussion.

Was watching Da Vinci Code movie film and thinking what's up with Tom Hank's hair? Also thinking that nearly everything they presented in this story is probably true, at least much more true than what is widely believed, but that it doesn't make any difference because Mohammad is known only as a prophet and not a deity, or son of a deity, and all can see how blindly his followers worship.

A wasp flew into my bedroom this morning - probably from somewhere else in the house, though it might have teleported. I don't think I've ever seen a wasp in January before, and I've no idea how it got in - the last time I left the house was yesterday afternoon, but there had been no sign of it in the intervening 16 hours.

Queen's a fair chunk bigger than a standard worker (which is the sort of wasp you'd be more familiar with), is the main & obvious thing. You'd expect some queens to be around at this time of year, especially in houses as they want not-too-frozen places to hibernate. A worker still alive at this point would be really odd.
Title: Re: Workshop Booze Up VI - These Are Not The Potatoes You Are Looking For
Post by: Glaurung on January 11, 2016, 10:46:56 PM
It might have been a bit bigger than what I'd think of as normal, but I'm not sure. I was just trying to work out the quickest and most effective way of killing it without getting stung.

The queen vs. worker distinction did occur to me. I'm hoping it was a queen; if it was a worker I'd guess there was an active nest somewhere in the house, which is not a happy thought at all :(
I'm still wondering how it got in as well - there's no visible sign of a wasp-sized hole through the ceiling to the attic.

In a small piece of Web news, the Ning (more specifically the Nerdfighter Ning, but frankly nobody knows what any of the other nings are anyway) has announced that it's dying very abruptly as of the end of this month because of financial issues. I used to frequent its rather good chatbox; it's also about the same age we are.

http://nerdfighters.ning.com/profiles/blogs/very-bad-news

So we can chalk that down as:
a) Another community a lot larger and better funded than us who for some unknown reason we outlasted
b) One less possible lot to invite to the Atheniad, alas
c) A slightly sad passing moment in the history of the Great Wide Interweb

The Nerdfighters site still seems to be there, on the day it was expected to disappear. I don't know whether that's because the admins have succeeded in getting it onto an affordable hosting plan (e.g. by getting the membership count below 100,000), or whether ning.com just haven't got round to deleting it yet.

I'd be inclined to invite people from Nerdfighters if we can. I don't think it would be aggressive, as long's it's suitably worded.

I think it's worth observing that Exilian's democratic structure means we shouldn't suffer from the same problem. At the moment, it seems to be entirely up to Nerdfighters' site owners whether the site lives or dies - the admins seem to be working hard to give it a chance of survival, but the owners aren't talking to them. I don't think that could happen to us.

It seems they've got a short transition period and the current admins (who aren't the current owners) are setting up a new Ning site, which I imagine will have the core community rolling over but without the extra member numbers. So that's probably somewhat saved them for now.

It's on BBC Two - the webpage (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lskhg) describes it as a "quiz show in which connections must be made between apparently unconnected things, where patience and lateral thinking are as vital as knowledge". If you want to try it out, the site includes a lot of example games (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2Z79DzzJY8w2R58bpftq14k/quiz). I've had a go at some of them with Jubal, and sometimes the thinking has to be very lateral indeed.

Today went well I think.

Audition was short, but fine, we struggled on the R1s (guess the connection with as few clues as possible) and R2s (guess the end of the 4 part sequence with as few clues as possible) because the sport and pop culture knowledge was a bit outside our boundaries (partly on age grounds!). We got full marks on the practice wall though and did well on missing vowels; they definitely seemed to think we were a worthy standard, but it just depends what other teams they have and the average calibre. If we don't get on this time I feel like it would definitely be worth another shot in future. They also liked our cloaks (and the producer-y person was very excited to borrow a spare one for a photo!).

Also, random thing on the way home, hanging around in Marylebone station in a cloak (as you do), decided to play the piano for a bit. Both the piano and I had seen better days for music making, I was just hamering out chords on whichever of the keys still worked and singing along. My poor musical choice turned out to be a good life choice though - not only did I get someone actually telling me how nice it sounded, but - unbeknownst to me - it turned out that the nearby cupcake stand delivers free prize cupcakes to musicians they like, so I got free food out of it as well. Not bad considering I haven't played in years. :P

Tomorrow, time to start sorting out computing woes...

Still coughing :(

Meanwhile, I spent a couple of hours this evening delivering political leaflets in Cambridge. It will probably not surprise anyone to know that they were LibDem leaflets :P

I'm off to conference at the weekend!

As for now, though, I'm having a bunch of weird muscle tension issues and feeling rather stressed out and ill - a cocktail of emotional and work problems is proving thoroughly unhelpful in that regard. :(

Also greek textbook best textbook, LibDem leaflets best leaflets, muscle tension worst tension and rtw best tw.

I'm currently mainly trying to get a bit further with dissertation - if I can get to around 5000 words on paper (a quarter of the total) I'll then have a sort of basic structure there that might make further fleshing out a little easier. I think next week I might take some more time off though, I'm run pretty flat at the moment and I suspect a weekend of politics won't help.

So I left my desktop shut down for the week I was gone and now the internet won't work on it (wireless devices work fine) and when trying to play some videos it gives me a prm error. What the hell?

Generally when a specific part of a computer is being armadilloty (GPU not allowing higher resolutions, wifi not working, Audio or microphone not working) the first thing you should do after restarting the PC is reinstall drivers.

Those were, in fact, the two things I did. I'm just at a loss as to why it would do that in the first place. Mad at being left off for a week maybe?

Very rare species. Lots of evidence of it's existence, but only seen very occasionally.
