Title: Hannah Milburn's Concept Art
Post by: Jubal on February 04, 2014, 05:54:58 PM
This thread is for the art done by Hannah Milburn, currently as near as we have to an "official" concept artist. Hannah's work evokes the feel of Guns, Swords, and Steam extremely well to my mind; subtly rather than dramatically gothic, cleverly constructed, and creating a world that ultimately is full of surreal experiences happening to all-too-realistic people. I've really enjoyed seeing all her work so far and hopefully there will be more to come!

Very much reminiscent of Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride, very good though. Hugely talented artist :D

Very pretty. :D

The artwork looks really clean and straightforward, but once you start examining it more closely you'll actually notice that it's full of subtle, wonderful details. And yes it really is very Burton-esque.

The Nurreich Engineer is my favorite.
The figure itself has a lot of character, but all the subtle details are what really blew my mind.

Hi  ;D my ears must have been burning.  I'm hoping to start some sketches to go with shadow-kiki's story so I'll try and put them up to get people's thoughts. It's been a while since I did a comic so it might be a slow start.

Ooh, nice :)

I should really do some more short stories for GS&S... But then I also want to get the RPG rulebook more complete. Never enough time!

Hannah! :D We've all heard about you so much! Awesome artwork BTW.

Jubal, not sure how I would go about doing it but would it be possible for me to try writing a GS&S short story? I don't know all that much about the GS&S world yet though, I'll probably have to finish reading your old story of it.
Title: Re: Hannah Milburn's Concept Art

Yes, of course! The old story isn't the best basis; I can email you the main background document though which gives more or less all the basic information you'll need.  :)

Thanks everyone's been so lovely with their feedback. hopefully they'll improve a bit with all the practice I'm getting. Hope you've not heard too much ;) can't  wait to see what angle of gss you take for your story I really hope I can get around to doing a story  but like you said Jubal there's not enough time to do list seem to be never ending .

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This one is pretty much perfect for how I imagined them (complete with the attitude!)  :)

For those who don't know, Portunes are tiny (as shown) beings who have innately strong connections to the astral/aether, which basically equates to having a shortcut route into other people's heads/minds/souls.

Thanks guys! God I wish I was a 1/5 as good as Adamowicz his landscapes are amazing. Funny you should mention elder scrolls though cause I did look at  spriggans and high elves for some inspiration :).
Glad to hear that I got near the mark Jubal wasn't sure if they were supposed to have wings or not.
Also here my first sketch for the scholar to go with the protune.

Ha it's a good thing it's not inked in, I have bop so grammar and spelling aren't my strong point xp so I'll apologies for all my errors now. (Managed to break Soros yesterday cause of all my spelling errors -_-)

Might not get anything up for a couple of days got one last album cover to do and just bought child of light and I need several hours just to look at her hair. But I'll try and get a comic page finished and start working on a neat version or the scholar & protune. So please get any thoughts and changes/ideas that you have about them. :)

The landscapes are some of my favourite stuff so far, just being able to see Qualnar and that "Florence in the middle of the alps" feeling coming over so well is really awesome.  :)

Also the portune and scholar are adorable.
Title: Re: Hannah Milburn's Concept Art
Post by: Cuddly Khan on May 13, 2014, 10:02:08 PM
Just being painfully blunt here. The landscape is a bit empty and underwhelming. They just look flat and boring. The buildings have those random little bricks on them every now and than but the trees and mountains don't have any texture at all. I still think it looks awesome though. I was just looking at it from a critiques point of view.
Title: Re: Hannah Milburn's Concept Art
Post by: Jubal on May 13, 2014, 11:58:05 PM
I disagree, I like that style - it actually brings a lot of clarity and boldness to the image, I think it makes the basic lines of the picture stick more firmly in one's mind. Most of this is concept, it's about getting the message/idea across and for me (at least), the idea of Qualnar is captured very well.

Thanks Khan I'm glad you gave an honest critic of what you think I really appreciate it and I understand what you mean I did try adding details but I just couldn't get the quality of line I wanted (I spent a full day sulking about it). I think if I do landscapes in the future I'll try and do it by hand instead of on my tablet and maybe learn how to watercolour so that they have a bit more depth.
Glad you like it Jubal I stuck some of the text with it and if you don't like the font I can change it no problem.

Aww, and I just starting to think it looked like a nice place... I like the artwork though, I think I hold some sympathy with Khan's comment on the mountains, but equally that does draw your attention towards the city, which seems like what's wanted here?

I think the writing fits; I tend to use Blackadder ITC for GS&S stuff but that wouldn't work for a comic (too curly) and whichever that font is looks a bit more jagged which is quite in line with the story.  :)

The Jupiter symbol on the floor is excellent too, by the way, really neatly done.

Catacombs, Khan. Qualnar has a massive network of catacombs/chambers of the dead/chapels below the city, and there is a huge and very deep cave network running well below that. It's one of the largest centres of population for troglodytes  :)

I had their skin tone as fairly similar to that of humans, but a bit more gnarly and mottled. Yellow could work though.
