It seems legitimate but I don't think it's got anything to do with Guns, Swords, and Steam.

This is indeed legitimate, and does look pretty cool. A point and click type adventure might be a good way to do this perhaps, would be my initial thoughts? Point & clicks are probably relatively nice coding-wise, and the game mechanics are nice and simple.
