Title: Attila: Total War announced

Quote
Creative Assembly is putting Rome II behind it and returning to the tortured, drawn-out death throes of the Roman Empire, last explored in the original Rome: Total War's Barbarian Invasion expansion. This time, however, it's encapsulated by the warfare and wanton destruction of Attila the Hun. Total War: Attila puts players in the fifth century, attempting to rebuff Attila's campaign of terror and stave off the Dark Ages.

Or not. You can also play as any number of "barbarian" tribes, attempting to hasten the fall of both the Eastern and Western Roman Empires and claim Europe/Western Asia for your own people. I'm not sure whether you can actually play as Attila, though the way Creative Assembly phrased things it sounds like the answer is no—he's merely a threat looming on the horizon.

Here we go again! Thoughts?

If I'm being pessimistic then I worry if Attila's arrival is like the Mongols in M2TW where they rock up with a far stronger army than anyone can field and generally be a pain in the ass. I won't be moving onto it anytime soon, I'm still getting my head around R2TW

I just hope they don't mess up with the release again!

Still haven't advanced beyond M2TW.

Looks good. Shame they have finished with R2 though, especially now that people started to get excited by it again thanks to EE (Emperor Edition).

As far as the choice of time period. I'm okay with it, not brilliant by a long shot but not disastrous. It does look pretty dark and grimy from the sceenies. Which is good I guess, or at least its what everyone else is doing. Which means it must be good...Right?

I don't think it will be exactly but there will definitely be similarities. ALSO right now 75% of all total war titles except for R2 (but including it's dlc iirc) on steam. If you don't have steam yet, get it and get these for ludicrous prices. I actually bought the rest of the total wars I had on disk but not steam just because they're so cheap (less than £4 for med2 with expansion).

I think that the new Attila total war should be good if CA have learnt from their mistakes and don't let Sega pressure them in to releasing it too early. To me it just looks like Rome 2 shunted forward in the time line but I'll get it for the new factions and campaign.

Gosh darn it CA, ya did eet ageen. Day 1 DLC is terrible. If you don't pre-order, the three viking factions (Danes, Jutes, G-men) will be extra upon release.

The silly thing is I will probably pre order because I really want to play as those factions.

Unfortunately so do I. I'm going to wait for a sale this time though. Perhaps pick it up in the summer sale.

I don't know when I'll get it if I don't pre-order. Anyone signed up for total war arena alpha?

Maybe, I'm hoping they'll learn from their mistakes.

Same, I think it will be what rtw2 should have been but with Vikings. :)

In my opinion MTW2 has the best playability and game mechanics so far.
RTW2 has some really nice and realistic battle animations and the battles tend to look less mathematical (at least on the surface). They seem to be more organic and nowhere as predictable as they used to be in the previous games.

I agree Wolfie, I prefer the battles in R2, but I'm not a fan of the province system and army limits.

The army limits make me so sad. I remember playing Imperial Glory years ago and thinking "TW games are better than this simply because of unlimited armies".

So, I got this game (or rather was given it). I'm pleasantly surprised so far, it feels much better than Rome 2 did at release.

I feel like I ought to try some newer TW games, but I never seem to have the time & inclination.

I'm still kind of surprised at people not liking the army limit thing. For me it's one of the best changes they made. I'm also a fan of the quasi-mo-cap style the fights are in, although that too is apparently the wrong opinion to have as well :P

The thing Attila does that annoys me is that the stats no longer seem to mean anything other than as balancing tools. For the most part it's balanced well but some of the things seem odd like nobles and Roman inf having less attack than levy freedmen. They still win in fights due to higher hp and armour but to me it'd be nicer if stats more reflected the ability of each unit. Idk it just feels a bit off.

EDIT: Also the faction unlock dlc. Yeah you can mod it to play as the factions but you'd miss out on abilities and traits and such which come with the dlc that make them a unique faction.

I didn't like the army limit when I was playing Rome, but its not bothering me as much in Attila so far. I don't know if its been increased or if Imperium levels have been balanced a bit or what, but it seems decent now. I think that the key thing which made me dislike it was me wanting to leave a decent garrison in frontier settlements as well as have armies in inner provinces to keep up public order and crush rebels, as you do in the original Rome.

The thing Attila does that annoys me is that the stats no longer seem to mean anything other than as balancing tools. I'm finding that the stats are somewhat hidden away anyway. I miss being able to right click to open a simple scroll telling me the stats, instead I have to use "Total War Encyclopedia". I've hated that thing since Shogun 2 :) . I'm pretty far into a game as the Saxons, and I only know which units are best through trial and error pretty much.

EDIT: Also the faction unlock dlc. Yeah you can mod it to play as the factions but you'd miss out on abilities and traits and such which come with the dlc that make them a unique faction.

This makes me sad. Ten factions seems like a really small number. I don't see why they have to do this. The packs are pretty expensive given they only unlock three factions (I think). I'll probably pick them up in a Steam sale nonetheless.

I'm really glad that a proper family tree has made a comeback, and the politics system seems much better than it did in Rome 2 as well. I've actually been aware of how its supposed to work, for one thing.

For me the garrison system is such a large improvement, with Emperor Edition for R2 the Imperium levels got a bit of a rework to get a smoother curve. Although I'd actually like a system where public order hits the floor if you have a large army in the city but it also can't rebel outright.

So true, the encyclopedia is decent enough n S2 I thought (mostly because it was accessible offline) but in R2 it was outright giving false information until recently.

That is exactly what they do (well, along with add new units). Family tree is better than ever imo and tbh I was again in the minority that thought the politics system in R2 was decent but it is way better in Attila.

Currently 140 turns in as Franks who have great shock cav backed up by decent infantry. But I've not played it since feb because I've been on Heroes of the Storm and replaying Dragon Age 1 and 2. :P
