Title: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on April 30, 2015, 10:30:49 AM

Hi all! I'm working on a micro-CRPG / sim called Innkeep. It's a bit of Ultima 7 style classic CRPG, meets a modern day-by-day narrative survival sim like This War of Mine, with thematic ideas taken from Les Miserables (think, the crafty master of the house character, Thenarndier (https://youtu.be/WWzBtuGsXGc)).

Basically, I wanted to try and capture elements of what I like about CRPGs (narrative progression, interesting characters, the feeling of being in a world), but with a static location. The idea I had was to have a game set in that classic RPG location, the humble inn, where you are the one wearing the apron, and the people of the world come to you. You serve them food and drink. You tell them about recent rumors, and maybe share a joke or two. You hire bards to play music and keep everybody having a good time until late. And then you rob them. In their sleep. A little bit...

The game will have some light sim elements. You need to manage your stock of food, drink, firewood and candles. There is serving to be done, and you will need to do a bit of "creative" cooking. But the core focus of the game is really about "looking after" your guests. In the evening while serving, you are on the lookout for identifying which guests you want to try and steal from in the night. You need to eavesdrop on conversations, observe them at a distance, and use your silver tongue to try and wheedle out some clues. Once you have your mark, then, in the dead of night you can let yourself into their room, prying open backpacks, wiggling rings from fingers, slipping chains from necks. If you have done your job properly, they should be far too drunk to notice a thing. And with that extra cash you can keep this show on the road, despite the difficulties of wartime scarcity. The idea is not to force you to play a mustached villain, but to have a bit of fun, and at the same time to try and push you towards having to make choices about who you will or will not rob, and why (a bit like with Papers Please).

Ever since I started part time work on the project a few years back I've kept track of my progress via dev diary videos on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/user/Danchanman1). Maybe check out an early video to see where I was starting from (like, can-use MS Paint but don't know what a layer is computer drawing skills), and drop in on the most recent video to see where things stand today. It can help you get a sense of how far I've come, and what kind of game it is shaping up to be. Then if you are on twitter (https://twitter.com/DanielOBurke), consider giving me a follow. I also have a site for the game here (https://innkeepgame.com/), (although I'm still in the process of upgrading it so it might be missing a few links). I'll keep an active eye on this thread so I can answer any questions you might have, but I also have a discord channel (https://discord.gg/hb4DGyX)if you want to chat more directly. Finally, you can learn more about ongoing development and get access to extra stuff like music tracks (by John Halpart) at the Patreon page (https://www.patreon.com/Innkeep).

Cheers!

Daniel

The project sounds really interesting, definitely something I'd give a go playing.

"Scalable" is definitely the way forwards; I've learnt a few lessons about game development in my short time in the industry, and a basic game you can add to is far more useful than something which starts too big and doesn't live up to expectations.

Good luck with it!

Thank you!  :) I had a good think about it for a couple of weeks in December when I was considering attempting to make something (I've written about this here (https://innkeepgame.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/what-i-want-to-make/)). The Innkeeper idea stuck with me because it seemed like a great way to keep things simple on the design front while still allowing for lots of variety. It's the kind of game I'd like to play myself if somebody else was making it. Hopefully I'll have something ready for alpha testing in a few months.

This looks great :)

Are there different types of drink you can serve to the different customer types etc?
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on May 03, 2015, 01:34:30 PM
Thanks. ;-)

There will be. Although I'm still working out the details, the current plan is for the quality of the drink to be important. Some guests will pay more for high quality drinks. However, there is the quality of the "brand", and the -actual- quality. There might be some discrepancy because water somehow *cough* got mixed in at some stage. Goodness me. If a guest is pretty sloshed they might not notice at all.

Time for dev diary #6.  (http://youtu.be/A-p_cL_LqoM)

== Major Features ==

- There is now an icon system for guest needs. Right now that means simply drinking, but later could include food and shelter. When a guest doesn't have a drink, an icon will appear at the top of the screen. Icons slide along and stack on each other properly. This system allows you to immediately have the information you need about how many people need serving. You can also find out which icon represents which guest by mousing over it, which makes that guest become highlighted.

- There is now a barmaid. When idling she will walk around the tavern sweeping. She will also collect empty tankards from the tables and return them to the shelf for you.

- Guests will now smoke pipes sometimes. Each smoker is adding to the total amount of smoke in the room. As the amount increases clouds of pipe smoke will increase in number and become more visible, wafting about. By the end of a busy night the inn might become quite smokey.

- Guests now actually sit down instead of standing next to their tables. Perhaps not a "major feature" from a gameplay perspective, but required a significant amount of work integrating/adapting sprites properly with the tables and benches when sitting. It wasn't enough simply to make the guest sprites shorter.

== Minor Changes ==

- The glove cursor is now drawn to GUI, so it goes -over- GUI elements like a good glove cursor should.

- There is now a cellar door. That goes nowhere....

- Added a circular glow effect to the candles.

- Added a proper debugging mode that I can switch on and off, making various cheat buttons active for spawning things and changing different variables.

I will give this major bonus points if I'm allowed to serve people salted beer. :P

Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on May 12, 2015, 04:26:30 PM
Lol. Is that a thing? Salt makes people thirsty, so they drink more??

By the way, the new domain for the game site is up and running at www.innkeepgame.com. There is a new fairly lengthy post on there about recent developments in my thinking on what the game will be. The long and the short of it is that I'm pretty excited! I'm pushing much further now towards a persistent world outside your inn, which itself acts as a kind of window where you both help steer the fate of the adventurers passing through, and see the results (and hopefully reap the rewards) of your actions when they come back from their adventures. Tweets guests will have a lot more significance in being connected to events that have actually (well, virtually) happened to them on their travels or personally generated histories.

I'm pretty sure, yeah. I can't find a good web-reference right now, but I've definitely seen it noted down in a history book somewhere.

EDIT: After a bit of searching academic records, a gorgeous reference to the practice, from an ancient edition of the British Medical Journal, from 1878:
Quote
SALT IN BEER.
PROFESSOR BERNAYS, Public Analyst for Camberwell, makes some statements in his last report which are very important in relation to a recent prosecution. In the past quarter, he has examined eleven specimens of beer, ale, and porter. As to alcohol, except in a spruce-beer which contained 14.3 per cent., the variation was only between 8 and 10.5 per cent The same lack of hops is exhibited as of old; at least, a little goes a long way. But the most curious feature is in the increase of salt. He has mentioned the almost absence of salt in days gone by. Now, however, we have arrived at a quantity, in one case, so large that he obtained a magisterial decision and a penalty, reduced, at the request of Mr. Marsden, from ,£10 to £5, together with costs. He gives examples, stating the grains per gallon: No. 57, not estimable; 58, 5.60; 59, 11.20; 68, 13.30; 67, 30.0; -, 32.90; 63, 34.3o; 61, 44.10; 60, 47.69; 69, 58.10; 70, 82.60.

Here, then, we have, from a merely nominal presence, as much as eighty-two three-fifths grains of salt in a gallon: a quantity sufficient to induce thirst and to encourage drunkenness.

As an additional twist to the possibilities of diluted or salted beer, might there also be occasional, random visits from trading standards officers / inspectors, able to impose a significant fine for the sale of adulterated products?

Just out of interest - did you build the engine from scratch? Or are you using something pre-existing?

It's made using game maker. But everything on top of that engine I've coded by hand.

It's surprisingly versatile when it comes to what you can do in it. Some recent examples would be Gunpoint, Hotline Miami and Spelunky.

Hi. Thanks. ;-)

I did a bunch of code streamlining and bug fixing since my last dev video, but I don't have much else to show. I had a very busy couple of months, and while things have quietened down since it really broke my flow. I'm going to be working less hours in a week from now though, so it's a great opportunity to get started again.

Hi everyone. Happy near year and best wishes for 2016.

Unfortunately this project ended up falling by the wayside for the most part for the last half a year. Time flies! It was a really busy time for me, and I think I burned myself out trying to do too much at once. This game was never far from my mind though, and I did get to make a fair bit of progress here and there, although mostly just fixing all the bugs and quirks, making everything work exactly as I wanted it to.

Anyhow, I'm now enjoying an actual lengthy break, and for the last week or so I've started actively developing every day. I'll be able to release a new dev video soon I think. ;-)

And here is the January update. Expect the next one in around a month.  ;-)

https://youtu.be/WwoB2219clg

 == New Features ==

- New guest type! This one is a soldier.
- New sprite for both the innkeeper and for the commoner guest. They look prettier, but also have been done with a new simplified sprite system in mind. Instead of having left, right,

front, back variations, we have one simple variation. This makes more sense for when they need to be animated in the future. The new sprite faces a little to the front and to the right, and

can be flipped to the left if needed by simple code. These sprites can also easily be modified slightly for making seated variations.
- Along with ale there are now two new types of drinks, wine and mead. Each have their own barrel sprites, stein sprites and needs icons.
- Guests will specifically ask for a type of drink now, rather than just generically ale. You can only serve them what they have requested.
- After standing for a little while guests will generate an icon showing that they would like a seat. This disappears when they are directed to a place to sit.
- Icons will begin to change from white to pink to red as a warning when they have not been met for some time. Neglect addressing a guests need for long enough will now result in the need

being "failed", with it disappearing and the guest taking a hit to their mood.
- The display at the bottom of the screen showing guest information now also displays all current active needs of that guest in icon form.
- The mood icon in the guest info display has also been replaced. It now shows a close-up of the guest's face.

 == Improvements ==

- When moving barrels in the cellar GUI it is now possible to drag a barrel over a slot where a barrel already is present and swap it with the location of the barrel you originally grabbed.

This is just more convenient, but also necessary for when the cellar is full and you want to shift your barrels.
- When serving from behind the bar to people at the bar you now always path behind the bar to a point that is closer to them, rather than pathing out from behind the bar and around, which

used to happen. Makes serving easier and more sensible.
- When mousing over a guest if they have a needs icon it will now highlight and pop down a little, basically the same but in reverse as if you moused over the needs icon and had the guest

highlighted. This makes sense now that we have multiple needs and wish to know right away what that specific guest wants.
- Added a few more sound FX. These will all need re-doing later, but it's nice to at least code in some temporary ones here and there for now. There is now a sound for pouring drinks, a

popping sound for needs icons, a sound for moving barrels, and a sound for the front door opening.
- Various drink qualities now exist, instead of everything simply being average. An integer between 0 - 100 is represented as very poor quality, poor quality, average quality, high quality

or excellent, with each of the five descriptions representing a spectrum covering a range of 20 percent out of 100.
- Filled out the tankard shelf with more tankards. Later these might need to be purchased as you progress.
- Guests now wait a moment by the front door when first appearing, with audio playing for the door opening and being shut. They also don't issue a request for drinks until they are up near the bar.

My only tiny critique is that mead is usually a deeper colour, I'd make it a bit darker and more orangey.  :P

In all seriousness, really nice work, just watched through the update vid. :)

Thank!

Yes on the mead. We have a meadery near my house and I do drink it sometimes, but I was finding that the originally a darker color felt a bit too hard to make out on the screen. I'll have to tweak it. A bit of orange to it sounds like a good idea.

The current yellow would work better for cider perhaps if you're planning on including that?
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on February 07, 2016, 03:33:31 PM
If I add another drink cider would be it. I wouldn't rule it out.

I'll get round to toning down that yellow some time.

Hi all. I realized I haven't posted here in quite a while. I've continued developing innkeep over the last year and a half, carrying out a big refresh of the graphics, and along the way figuring out what the core of the game is going to be. I'm looking forward to having a lot of the core game mechanics implemented by the end of the year.

There are a few development videos and posts on my page if you are interested. Most recently I made a working cellar. ;-)

I'll be sure to return to this thread when I have some new material to share.

Cheers,

Daniel

Welcome, great to have you back! :) Definitely post some new material soon, would be good to see more of how things are going & more things to put in the newsletter is always nice.

I like the "dolls' house" style, as you put it, for things like the cellar; it works very well indeed. The games I've been making for a while haven't needed any of those sorts of spatial elements, but it was great to read how they were achieved and good food for thought!
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.

Thanks. ;-)

It can be challenging sometimes working with the perspective, but it's let me do some interesting things. I think it's well suited to the kind of game I am making. If it was more of a general management/construction style sim I would want to go with isometric. But with the play area fixed, and the focus on the core game loop with narrative, this seemed like a more interesting way to go.

What I'm working towards at the moment is just getting the play space properly knocked into shape. That's all I've been doing for a few months now actually! Still a few more months to go. Once the foundation is good to go I will begin to introduce actual gameplay elements.
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: Jubal on August 02, 2017, 11:01:41 PM
Yeah - I've always felt that building core mechanical stuff then gameplay is probably a better way to go. I never seem to manage to make myself do that, when I'm designing I always want to get to something I can playtest quickly, but I think building things like play space first is probably more efficient.

That sounds like fun. I have learnt a few things about drawing game art side during the course of this project, since I started with practically zero experience. I could write about that if you like. Alternatively about the thinking that went into coming up with my game idea. There was a bit of a method involved that others might find helpful. If you have any suggestions let me know. ;-)

Innkeep now has a music and FX guy, the talented John Halpart, principle composer for Tom Francis' latest game, Heat Signature.

I've got some time free for game development over the next few months. Looking forward to sharing some cool new features in a dev video early next year,.

That's perfect, lovely stuff! :) Both has the old-timey tavern feel and somehow reminds me of the music from old Age of Empires games in places (which I should add is always a plus and a lovely nostalgia trip).

Wow coming along great. I love the time of day atmosphere. The sunset coming in to the room looks really warming :)

Would there be any game play as you approach the inn? or is that just for setting the scene. Also do certain rooms unlock over time or is the whole thing available the moment you turn up?

Transitions are looking good too.

Looking forward to seeing your NPC's drinking their flagons of ale, and I'm guessing you'll need to add purchasables as well? Or would that be inventory based
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on July 19, 2018, 11:16:18 AM
Thanks very much. ;-)

Walking outside the inn will just be for setting the scene and hooking the player, introducing the situation with the broader world (war just passed through) without any expository dialogue to read.
However, I -might- have a scene before that where you are looting bodies on a battlefield. It might serve as a tutorial for stealing things from guests when they sleep later. (A tutorial because there is no fail state with a dead person... ;-))

That said, that area outside the inn will also be very useful just as a GUI for showing when people are coming. You'll know a trader is on their way, for example, because you will see the little wagon rolling up for a minute before they arrive at your door. Some special story events could also be shown there, like a company of soldiers turning up, or a blizzard coming through.

You will need to buy things to help keep the inn running. I'll be separating the trinket inventory (items you "find" or trade which might help with dialogue options, certain actions, or can just be traded in for coin), from the rest of the inns storage (foodstuffs, wood, candles, sheets etc.)

Here's the animation for the trinket chest in action. ;-)
https://twitter.com/DanielOBurke/status/1019584059742158848

With rooms, you will have access to all of them to start with, however they will need to be fixed up / furnished somewhat.

Post by: Tusky on July 20, 2018, 11:58:04 AM
Sounds really cool.

Is the stealing part mandatory? Or have provisions been made for anyone that may just want to run an inn without resorting to anything nefarious
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on July 20, 2018, 12:12:47 PM
Stealing will be more or less mandatory, but as a matter of economic survival. You'll never be forced to steal from a particular character. How much you take, and from who, will be your choice. Ideally, it would be possible to survive while only targeting nastier guests, or those wealthy enough to be able to afford losing a little.

Doing some art work for the sake of updating the page etc. Gives you an idea of how the game should look once its closer to being finished. ;-)

Also carried out a pretty big update of the patreon landing page, where you can find more up to date information of what the game will be.

Featuring:

- Player walking animation.
- Working candles
- Shadowmap - ambient light integration
- Spawnable guests linked to a dialogue window
- the sexiest barrels you ever did see
- less waffling!

Yeah I really am enjoying the animation process. There's going to be a hundred or so animated guests once I'm done (working off a few dozen base models). It should really help the place come alive once you have 9-10 animated characters on the screen at once.

Yeah. I should learn more about how to do these sorts of pixel-animationy things, it looks an interesting process but I've never made myself sit down and look at how it's done practically.

If you are ever interested in trying your hand at pixel art animation I can really recommend Pyxel Edit. Super user friendly and powerful.

https://pyxeledit.com/ (https://pyxeledit.com/)

Using this and watching some simple youtube videos was enough to get me started.

Here's one I used to learn how to do a walk animation using the same software.

to get something looking half decent.

Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: Jubal on April 26, 2020, 10:45:30 PM
Really neat!

A couple of thoughts. The outdoor scene looks very barren - which I guess it's meant to be, but I feel like one or two more scrubby little bushes wouldn't hurt - and the road feels weirdly dark compared to the landscape for what's presumably meant to be a dirt road.

I really like the idea of the tutorial and how it's meant to unfold, that sounds great. Though I hope the innkeep's death isn't toooo grisly.
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: BeerDrinkingBurke on April 27, 2020, 02:53:01 AM
Thanks for the feedback!
Yes I agree about the barrenness. It's partially intentional, because it is a kind of empty steppe, but it's also because I'm still finding trees and such quite difficult to draw. ><So rather than get bogged down I was thinking I could populate some of the back layers with a few more details later on.

Re: the dirt. I am wondering if this is partially due to the video, and if it looks more natural in-game. The dirt is very dark but usually covered by all the grasses. If I get this feedback consistently I guess I will need to consider making some changes.
Title: Re: Innkeep! - Serve Ale. Collect Rumors. Make Coin.
Post by: Jubal on August 01, 2020, 07:46:42 PM
That's all very fair (sorry for the super slow reply!) - natural features, especially ones with complex, non-consistent shapes, are generally hard to draw well in any format IMO.

How are things going? :)

Oh thanks!
Yes, I have played a bit of Graveyard keeper too. Nice graphics on that one.

Innkeep will be not so much a tycoon style game, although it will have some management aspects. It's a bit hard to describe, but maybe like an RPG meets This World of Mine is closer?

It feels like good motivation for getting work done!
For the last one six months back I did end up with a publisher contacting me as well, which was nice.
It's also pretty stressful though. I've been wrangling with rendering issues preventing me from having a proper embedded video. Went with GIF instead, but then that looks blurry... It's disappointing to have technical issues hold you back. But I guess its a learning experience too. As long as you don't take it too seriously its prob v. good exposure.

With my projects there's so little graphical movement that I always feel they come off badly in video-trailer formats. I just about managed one for LIFE a few years ago but that had little frame-sequence animations I could include: Exile Princes and Fenlander have even less to see.

But yeah, I should get back on the proverbial horse with this stuff. It's just difficult to juggle everything at the moment between trying to finish the thesis and the usual issues of isolation etc etc.

TBO I don't feel my project looks so good in video-trailers either. At least, not when viewed on a phone like the typical twitter viewer is.
I know what you mean about the juggling! Making games is so very time consuming. Juggling that with a thesis is something I tried, and I opted to put aside the thesis in the end. ><

Thanks Jubal,
I've still got a lot of work to do to get my nervous system happy with me again (so I need to take it a little slow and steady with getting back to work), but I'm really enjoying being able to use my eyes and ears more or less properly. ;-)
Psychosomatic symptoms are pretty incredible. I worked myself a bit hard last week, and combined with poor sleep and a bit too much visual stress from playing UnReal world on Sunday, I woke up  Monday with some visual issues returned (pattern sensitivity and photo sensitivity). But, some exercise, regulating exercises (feet up wall), cold showers and things, and already within days I'm able to read books again and watch a bit of TV / use my computer a bit.

The nervous system can have an impact on so many of our systems, including vision, heart, etc. that we can easily mistake anxiety for all kinds of problems. ><

This is interesting! Some small thinkythinks:

Quote
Another thing might be awareness of a certain item you see them wearing, like a ring, or something distinctive about their clothes that might help you in understanding the characters better (place of origin, or class / caste).
I absolutely love this, it's something that keeps coming up in things like Coding Medieval Worlds discussions because the centrality of clothing to how people understand each other is absolutely crucial for the whole history of dress and yet games often don't reflect any part of this except armour stats, or at absolute best there'll be a "fancy clothes give you a persuasion bonus" mechanic.

Will there be much inter-table connectivity in the game? (Aka you can tell table X what's going on with table Y, possibly to mutual benefit or possibly to general detriment)? Or do the tables sort of form fairly separate interaction sets most of the time?

is no fundamental difference between an icon that represents a barrel of beer you have stored in your cellar, and an icon that represents a joke stored in your mind. Both are things you have acquired, and that you can click to visually inspect in more detail.
Definitely agree that this is a very Failbetter Games move: in Fallen London, too, everything is an item, whether it's "ravenglass knife", "shard of glim", "searing enigma" or "scrap of incendiary gossip". It's a system I like and I'm glad to see it being put to good use here :)

Thanks for the thoughts Jubal. ;-)
Yeah, the Failbetter approach just seemed natural given that I wanted to be able to show different pieces of knowledge or experience that the player had acquired.
I certainly intend to have times where something you notice on one table may then help you on another table. I'll also have another tab added later for longer term world knowledge that isn't a charm. So sometimes you might learn a thing from a table that will help you with a different table on an entirely different day.

Nice. I do like the modelling of social mechanics side of this, would be interested to read more on that side if you ever need a devlog topic idea :)
