Title: General political discussion
Post by: Glaurung on May 17, 2015, 07:47:07 PM
I found something interesting and politics-related. It didn't seem to justify a thread of its own, but we didn't have a thread for general discussion, as far as I could see. So I made one :)

Anyway, here's what I found: yet another BBC article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-32741802), this time about the nature of the presidency of the United States. The author found an interesting quote: "Great Britain is a republic, with a hereditary president, while the United States is a monarchy with an elective king." I don't think it's entirely true, but it says a lot about the powers and roles of the two positions.

Sadly it's become that. Ever since television.

So I was linked this test to see which party my answers match most. Apparently I'm a right-wing libertarian.

If anyone else wants a bash: http://uk.isidewith.com/political-quiz

I got 92% similar to conservative, 91% similar to UKIP and 66% similar to lib dems.

89% lib dem. 66% ukip. Kind of a sliding scale between the two.

Tory 83%
UKIP 76%

Scotts 73%

So just like me; supporting many but none.

Similar result to me cg, except I was all like F Scotland.

I see nothing wrong with most if libdem stuff, except that they want to bankrupt the country. I don't know if you clicked on the public opinion thing but it was pretty interesting to see 1.5M peoples opinions on things.

I didn't, but I cba to do the quiz again now and I'm not sure I can look at the public opinions first... Public opinion things like that are fun, though obviously the sample has no balance. I'm sure I've done that quiz at least five times!

https://www.politicalcompass.org/test is a nice political quiz. It shows a series of questions on a certain topic and asks you to, "Strongly Agree", "Agree", "Disagree", or "Strongly Disagree". When you take the test it will plot you on a graph measuring how authoritarian/anarchist you are on the y axis, and how socialist/capitalist you are on the x axis. I am Authoritarian Left.

Welcome to Exilian! Some people here like politics, or talking about it; some don't. I hope you'll find things you want to talk about - please feel free to explore and post.

On the Political Compass specifically, I struggle with it, as I do with a lot of other surveys. The propositions are often complex, and my responses very rarely boil down to (strongly) agree/disagree. Nevertheless I'm fairly sure I'm somewhere in the anarchist/left quadrant.

And also, some interesting and depressing thoughts about the era of post-truth politics (http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/may/13/boris-johnson-donald-trump-post-truth-politician) that we now seem to be entering. Note that this is "post" as in "after". Some of it is especially pertinent to the EU referendum in the UK - Boris Johnson may have been playing a very long game.

Wow, that is a whole lot of left libertarian! Haha, thank you for welcoming me! Between the board games, Mount and Blade, and politics- I think I'll fit in pretty nicely.

^ This is Pentagathus, he's the unwelcoming committee to counterbalance the welcoming committee :P

Anyway!

I think the post-truth politics thing is interesting, but I think portraying it as a move away from evidence based politics may be too rosy a view of the past...
