Title: What video games are you playing?
Post by: Clockwork on May 10, 2016, 02:20:25 PM

What are you playing at the moment?

I keep a few going at a time, Dawn of War: Soulstorm, Might and Magic VIII, Overwatch, beta stops today :( and Heroes of the Storm.

How good is Soulstorm? I have Dark Crusade, which I play occasionally and quite enjoy, I doubt I'd play the extra soulstorm factions but having the fliers seems interesting.

Anyhow, in my case I'm not getting as much time for gaming as I'd like (usual story). Last things I did were messing around with the Isles of Arthanos beta, and did a Dark Crusade game a week or so back. It always strikes me with these games just how much time I'd actually need to put in to be any good at playing them, I'm a hopeless gamer really!

The new factions are pretty good; SoB use a ton of flames which makes tactics a challenge as they lack the diversity of regular SMs and DE are a nightmare to face with low morale troops thanks to some buildings. The flyers are horrible though, they basically work as a tank that sits in the air, not fun to play with or against. Dark Crusade is definitely the best version of DoW1 but I finished that with all races already so I thought I'd try out the new things in Soulstorm.

Hell I play games all the time and I'm still...all right at most, nowhere near the levels of pros. Low diamond skill level in MOBAs though so I'm pretty good at those.

Hm, might give it a miss then. I only like playing as IG and T'au much in any case! I tend to find with RTS games, whilst I enjoy toddling through mid range difficulty or occasionally hard difficulty games, that I'm just not quick or aggressive enough to beat even higher level AIs let along humans. Turn based games I often take to rather better.

Post by: Clockwork on May 10, 2016, 11:26:18 PM
That's how I play RTS as well, I prefer doing things like massing Inf or creating a balanced force than using the best units. I keep getting told off by my teammates for taking talents in HotS that I think are more thematic/fit an RP/fit the lore than practical ones :P
Title: Re: What video games are you playing?

I like to colonise islands and build settlements gland whatnot instead of just aggressively building up my military to smash armadillo up. Which isn't a great tactic in most strategy games. But I don't generally play colonisation games where there is noone to crush under my boots.
Age  of wonders 3 (and its previous games) is a very good strategy game

Post by: Jubal on May 11, 2016, 10:56:24 AM
I have genuinely been known to play an RTS game nearly to the point of winning, shut the remaining AI stuff behind a big old wall, and then just get on with turning the map into a civilised agricultural paradise :p

I want to get Age of Wonders, I've heard it's like one of my all time favourites, Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Lol Jub :P

At the minute I'm mostly playing Eurotruck Simulator 2. It really helps remove the exam stress, plus it's the best game for listening to audiobooks/podcasts.

Never played Age of Wonders (I suck at RTSes) but always loved Civilization :P

To fill my quaint internet-less nights after putting kids in bed, I recently started on Lionheart (http://"https://www.gog.com/game/lionheart_legacy_of_the_crusader") and, dear god, I can't remember the last time I spent 8hrs straight playing a game. Not even Witcher 3. Needless to say, I am completely hooked.

I literally knew nothing about the game going in and was pleasantly surprised it's based entirely on real European medieval history, but with the typical Fantasy spin. So cue the great crusades being put to fighting undead hordes and the Inquisition persecuting magical users. Taking place in Barcelona I already met Da Vinci and am currently trying to help Shakespear write his next play :) And heard several mentions of the hertical England actually - GASP - using magic! The Queen must bleed for this.

That being said, it does suffer from the "oldus gamus" syndrome like crappy interface where simple design choices could have made things SO much easier (why oh why can't I have more quick-item/spell slots or see map markers on the minimap? and why are the inventory item images so goddamn huge??) The most annoying is being unable to make actions when paused; the cursor is way too finicky so sometimes you end up dancing around a moving enemy than actually hitting him.

Also found it a bit odd the game seems to be using DnD rules with a far more fast-paced Diablo-esque gameplay. But I am glad it's the latter and after getting used to some of the kinks I'm actually really enjoying playing my Thiefy Necromancer with a badass Crossbow :D Here's my Party:

Except the bear, who kept getting mauled all the time so I just stopped bothering to reload. portugal bears.

Also, Goblin Poetry:

Lionheart is one of my all time favourites, some of the voice acting is phenomenal (Torquemada, Da Vinci and Galileo for me) and the setting (as you've described) is superb.

The ruleset is actually based on Fallouts S.P.E.C.I.A.L since the same guys made both LH and FO with their most recent games being Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity.

Nice to see someone else enjoying this gem of a game :D

Switched games to Throne of Darkness, a diablo-esque game where you master 7 samurai, each with different strengths. To control them, 4 samurai are used simultaneously while 3 are left in the dojo. Also I started another character in Shadowrun: Hong Kong because I haven't played through the extended edition yet. This time rolled a straight up street samurai using a crappy SMG and battered katana to cleave through goons while my team provides all the useful skills.

Post by: Koobazaur on June 05, 2016, 10:12:55 AM

Well, I am back to Lionheart after the travel haitus. Hit a big boss at the end of Nostradamus caves which is a bitch since there is no way around it but fighting. Decided to wait until I level up a bit.

I got about 100 skill points still unused I dont know where to sink it in. Considering between sinking them all into Tribal Domination so I can slow down or possess enemies, Fortitude which would buff my undead, or Protective branch that'd give me some nice boosts + ring of cold damaging everyone around me. Tho I've been experimenting with all of those and frankly they all seem kinda crappy. It's like using up 100 skill points for a crappy 10% boost in one stat... didn't seem to make much difference. Dominance is the only one that seems useful with slow down enemy by 50% or having 25% chance of turning one into my ally...

I'm currently playing TES: Oblivion and TES: Skyrim, it feels like it's been a while since we have, but SotK and I play Civ. V and Age of Empires II a lot together.
I really want The Sims 4 as well because we've been watching a YT channel called The Sim Supply loads. :P

Total War: Warhammer is fantastic. Some of the design choices I disagree with but everything is made well and the singleplayer has great replayability.

Already mods are out changing gripes the community has with the game such as: In base there aren't different start positions for the legendary lords (the commander you select at the start of the game) so playing co-op the players can't be the same race. Also not all factions can occupy all the regions on the map, vamps can get human (not norscan) lands orcs can have dwarf lands.

Just completed witcher 3 dlc blood and wine and omg if it is not the best story i have EVER played. My (1 of 4 endings) was brutal yet totally in keeping with the mistakes i made. Most emotional i have ever been about a game. The epilogue aswell, tuned to your choices from the main came is exquisite. A game i recommend above all else.

Decided to pick up the original Quake during the Steam Summer Sale, particularly after finding original Doom really fun (two decades after its prime time heh). So far, it hasn't really grabbed me like Doom did, just lacked the "fun" factor.

BUT I just re-set it up with darkplaces sourceport so I can actually have the soundtrack playing (original Steam version doesn't have it), so I'm looking forward to re-trying it proper.

I just finished the first two acts of Kentucky Route Zero aaaannd... I don't feel it. I mean, it's beautifully cinematic, the visuals are starking, the audio is deeply atmospheric, even the UI is done very cleverly... but the contents of it all just aren't interesting me. I don't know if I missed some really important plot points, or some greater life-allegory is eluding me, but I just feel like I am getting small little quips of random slices-of-life without any real reason or logic to it. Why do I care about this little boy flying on his eagle? Why did I have to venture all the way to this house just to exchange two lines of dialogue with a woman I know nothing about and haven't met since?

I do like how the game lets you tell your own story in a lot of places by choosing between seemingly contradictory options ("how is your leg?" - "it's fine" vs "it's stuck") but so far I haven't seen any repercussions of my choices (aside from the leg, which im not even sure can be impacted), so it feels a little bit like fluff.

The level of polish is definitely astounding, but it's like a beautiful wrapper that hides a mediocre gift. I guess it really is more of a visual novel than a game you just need to sink in and enjoy like you would a book. But I guess countryside escapades just aren't a type of a book I would read :/

Still playing Mass Effect... Also finally got around to playing Fallout 4 which is so far so meh.

It's a good shooter with levelling up mechanics but sucks ass as an open world RPG. Still, Anna is doing well for herself. Has an outfit styled on Sandman from DC comics
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and looks pretty badass. Been knocking down a suburb so I can rebuild it which is more fun than actually doing whatever the main story is.

Just started playing Quake II after getting it on the last steam sale and enjoying it much more than the first. I don't know if it's because it has more story making it more "meaningful," a bit more realism (somewhat plausible alien base, believable solider weaponry, zomg recoil!) or if it's just better "game feel." Either way, it's very rewading when I just want to turn my brain off for a bit and shoot crap in the face :)

I've been craving replaying Final Fantasy 7 or 9 lately, but decided to try something new and picked up Grandia II Anniversary Edition. I'm two hours in and ugh I don't know if I can continue. It's the most generic JRPG experience ever. Generic Good vs. Evil plot, generic annoying male "im too cool" protagonist arguing with female lead before inevitably falling in love with her, generic starting village and evil forest, generic music, generic voice speech and voice acting...

I mean, christ, even the first evil demon is a goddamn fan service

I switched to Japanese voices and dear lord, she actually says "Kawaii" in a cutesy schoolgirl voice within a minute of showing up...

The combat is at least a bit wee interesting with timing and cancels, but leveling up and skills seem like they'll go down generic jrpg battle route.

It also made me think how the FF series really excel at great openings. From FF6s Magitek March, through FF7s bombing terrorist run or FF9s kidnapping of a princess. It makes you want to keep playing. Here, you just plop in boring village with no incentive to explore or follow on your "first job." Bleh. But hey, Geohound (the protagonist jobs) is kinda like a JRPG version of a Witcher, heh.

I started on Two Worlds Epic Edition and dear lord the voice acting is cringe worthy ;p The mechanics are also a bit clunky, but I'll give it more time.

I just realized all 3 of the past RPGs I played were a fantasy fair starring a bounty hunter protagonist (Witcher 3, Grandia II and now this). Whats up with all the bounty hunters...

Is Two Worlds more Gothica or more Elder Scrolls? Always been interested in getting it but always had something else on the go.

Been playing loads more HotS, always seem to be on my Diamond promotion game. Aside from that, Hard West (which I must write about) is fantastic, more Oblivion, more SWTOR again and every now and then, King Arthur 2 (More modern Medieval 2 Total War with monsters and heroes).

It's very dependent on modders to have a replayable experience. The basic mechanics used in sandbox, with no modification are basic FPS movement, very basic gunplay, entity ("props) creation, ragdoll manipulation, and basic NPCs.
Modifications are the main idea of the game, and they're relatively easy to create as the scripting language used is gLua, a very slightly modified version of Lua. There's a ridiculous variety of gamemodes, but the most popular are;
Various types of roleplay - Dark (basically cops and robbers with the occasional homeless person), military, star wars... harambe
Trouble in Terroist Town - Very similiar to mafia, albeit with more action based gameplay.
Murder - Simplified version of mafia, albeit again with more action based gameplay.
Prop Hunt - Hide and Seek where you disguise yourself as an object before hiding

Unfortunately the commnity is generally awful tweens and teens, but the few good people have kept me coming back for so far about 700 hours.

At the moment? Nothing. I wish I had the time to play games at the moment.

The last thing I really played was Divide and Conquer, a very good submod for Third Age TW.

And holy crap is it good. :p

A pity it is incompatible with hotseat mode. I'd love to try and do one. Yes, I know I killed the last one. I'm sorry. :(

Picked up LEGEND OF HEROES: TRAILS IN THE SKY (http://"https://www.gog.com/game/the_legend_of_heroes_trails_in_the_sky") from GOG and so far, disappointed.

I'm some ~5 hours in and finding the game really boring. There is no arch or story as of yet, the protagonists are new Guild recruits just running around completing quests to earn higher rank. And even those are just mediocre RPG fair - rescue kids lost in a tower, exterminate monsters on a farm, deliver  a package from a mine (which invariably gets swarmed with monsters). There's hints of something looming on horizon and character past, but nothing to drive the story forward.

The writing/dialogue also falls into the overly long and cutesy JRPG fare, so I see myself quickly skipping through chunks of it.

Shame, since the art is really nice and Orb/Quarts character customization and battle mechanics seem to have potential later on. Although right now the battles are tedious, fighting similar generic monsters that are just tad too difficult (having to use rest stops or healing items after nearly every battle).

Lastly, the game is buggy - sometimes the item descriptions will not show up, and the game launches with no audio at random times until you restart.

I will give it a bit more time (I am completing the last guild quest now so hopefully SOMETHING happens after), but so far not too impressed.

Episode 2 now. Still don't care for the emo teenage drama but enjoying the game as a whole. Very well crafted and directed, with great attention to detail.

Whoa, just wrapped Episdoe 2 of Life is Strange and it genuinely made me feel... guilty.

Earlier in the day I was hanging out with a friend and got a call from another I chose to ignore. Later on something really, really bad™ happened to the one I ignored and I just couldn't shake off the feeling that... armadillo, I shouldn't have ignored the call. I kept double guessing myself, wondering if I could have prevented it. Or at least could have been there for the friend.

I was flabbergasted I felt as bad as I would in real life if I let my friend down. It stayed on my mind for a while too. Few games manage to do that. Big applause for LiS...

For those who played:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But one thing that kind of spoiled it was the end-of-chapter stats that show you your choices compared to others. As it turns out,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This kind of cheapened the effect - the ambiguity was gone. It would've remained a stronger impact had I been left wondering.

EDIT: I fixed the spoiler tags - I assumed they were meant to be real ones (tag text 'spoiler', not 'spoil'). If that's not what you wanted, I'm sorry - let me know and I'll put it back the way it was.

KotOR and KotOR2 have to be two of the best RPGs of all time, easily the best two star wars games of all time.

Started them both again, simultaneously for some reason, with the restored content mods for both.

As well as that I'm playing through the Heroes of Might and Magic series starting with III and for whatever reason I'm finding it a much harder and at times unfair (or at least unforgiving) game than I remember. Still hugely enjoyable though.

Just got to Episode 4 of Life is Strange and god, this game can REALLY hit up some emotions. I was reluctant after Ep1 teenage emo stuff, but it manages to far excel it. Definitely gonna be one of my favorites, and probably the best narrative game I've played (next to Walking Dead 1). The whole exploration of house in alt-Chloe was just so perfectly depressing... it reminded me of my own bike accident a year ago and all throughout made me think "portugal... this could've been me." It kind of brought that thought home how lucky I really got.

Not to mention just how beautiful the whole game is. Cinematography is top nothch.

Whut?

Gmd man, I got a huge amount of respect for you. You rarely (comparitively) post but when you do, you post good and relatable armadillo but.... Power armour and LMG mowing down hundreds of dudes in WWI? I gotta disagree there, it portrays WWI horribly imo. Not saying it's a bad game, it's great and it's hella fun but does it really portray WW1 well? For me, despite it being an absolutely terrible game, Verdun takes the cake when it comes to WW1 portrayal. Staying in a goddamn ditch until someones takes your melon off with a goddamn high-powered-single-shot rifle which leaves you feeling depressed and useless. Same as always tbh. portugal life amirite?

Ladyhawk has been playing quite a bit of Dragon Age 2 recently, as she finished Inquisition and had finished Origins previously. It actually looks like a far better game than most reviews make it out to be.

Myself, I've been playing a bit of Europa Barbarorum 2 in my infrequent spare time. With that said, I don't get to play much.

Said i like the portrayal, not that it was accurate at all :P The campaign missions are especially fun and all have decent stories.

I'm some 4-5 hours into SOMA, gifted to me by some awesome friends at another gaming forum. So far really enjoying it, with intriguing story and atmospheric setting.

That being said, I think it suffers from a few big design flaws:

* There's a good chunk of moments (particularly in beginning) when you're in a new area and need to do something, without any clear indication of what it actually is. So you end up arbitrarily running around, flipping random switches, looking at items, until SOMETHING™ happens. Recent example - I was trying to activate a program on a computer but it wasn't working; the screen said I needed an extra "module" but no idea where it is, or what it even looks like. Turned out I had to run around the crew areas which I've already explore before to trigger an audio transmission that moved the plot forward. Ugh.
* On that, I am not a fan of the controls physics-puzzles. Some are logical, some just feel like arbitrarily twisting knobs and flipping switches until, again, SOMETHING happens. Occasionally they give no hint at all either, so it's just a matter of tediously running through all the possible permutations until you see an effect.
* As pretty as the game is, the environments can get just similar and repetitive enough to occasionally get lost. Particularly bad was the 3-level underwater station where you try to find a submarine. Many twisty corridors with tons of dead-ends, slowed down movement, blurred vision, no map, AND monsters lurking around. At the end there's also an unavoidable "monster chases you and you must RUN" section that took me like 10 tries cause I kept getting lost. I actually had to pre-plan my route and write down each turn to get through it. (Yes I know there's numbers on the walls but they weren't much help).
* This is more of a personal issue: I hate, hate, hate all the monster sections. Sneaky around unkillable foes is made worse by the obnoxious "don't look at the monster" mentality Frictional Games seems to adore. When you do, your whole screen messes up and glitches out. It's really damn hard to sneak by monsters you can't look at, especially with the aforementioned confusing layouts.

It kinda boggles me Frictional is still doing the same "mistakes" after all their games. But I guess their sales are going strong, so there is an audience for it. Might be just my taste (or impatience). For me, I feel the game would've been so much more enjoyable as a monster-less walking sim with some map or objective list at least.

Nonetheless I am enjoying it and the story is good, so glad I'm plowing through it. Just got to Omicron, and the plot thickens! Still finding the monster sections tedious but I think I've gotten better at em, managed to lure a monster away with some noises and ran past him.

I've been really busy, so mostly I'm playing things I can drop in and out of without too much effort:

-Slay the Spire is a beautiful roguelike deck-builder that everyone should check out, on Steam's Early Access
-Stardew Valley continues to hold my soul. I downloaded a mod that lets me date Pam, the beer-drinking, bus-driving battleaxe who holds my heart <3
-Phaorah is a SUPER old city-builder, which I got from GOG recently, along with a mod to improve graphics performance on modern machines. I shall rule the Nile, and live forever.

OML PHARAOH PHARAOH IS AMAZING :D

I love it to bits. I never got to the later end missions on the campaigns because I was terrible at it, but it's a beautiful game and I love it dearly :)

Oo, I got my best results while I was on sarms (https://www.muscleandfitness.com/supplements/best-sarms-for-bulking/) and never played Settlers II the 'first time round' as it were, but it does look good from a quick google.

Also, welcome to the forum, Kinnison :)

I agree. Pharaoh was amazing. GOG is a godsend for old school gamers. I picked up so many games I played back in the day on GOG it's not even funny. Next thing I'm going to play that I bought on there is Settlers II.

I bought Warhammer Total War. First real attempt at playing a more recent TW game than Med2.

Played as the High Elves and wiped the map pretty easily. Played the Wood Elves and can't seem to build any momentum. The Amber resource mechanic is a piece of armadillo. It has been enjoyable, and I have particularly liked how unique every faction feels. Not so keen on how it is assumed that Finubar, Louen Leoncouer and Karl Franz have to 'reconquista' Ulthuan, Bretonnia and the Empire respectively, but I understand it is a game-balance thing.

On another note, Ladyhawk and I bought both of the new Assassin's Creed games. I am particularly enjoying Origins at the moment, while Ladyhawk has skipped it and gone straight to Odyssey, I think due to being able to play as Kassandra right from the off.

They're beautiful games. The attention to detail is fantastic.

I still keep feeling I should get TW:WH. I really can't justify the time I'd need to spend on it to in turn justify the purchase though, especially with Mountain Leopards, The Exile Princes, my book, and running this forum all crying out for more time spent on them. :(

That's fair man. It is a big time sink. I've been trying to juggle full-time work, TW, AC, writing up my huge backlog of Norbayne sessions and trying to finalise the rules. Its not easy. :p

Had a look at the first page of this thread and found some mentions of Lionheart. Haven't played it in years but by God it is a gem of a game.

I got it for free in a bundle with the old War of the Ring RTS, which also had its moments. I definitely ended up spending far more time on Lionheart in the end.
