Title: Bees; The Fuzzy, Buzzy, Scary Friend
Post by: Lady Grey on June 23, 2016, 12:45:33 PM
I really want to like bees, but I've been scared of them for as long as I can remember. I think someone was stung when I was in playgroup/preschool and that's what started it.

There is also currently the most enormous bee in our bathroom at the moment and I can't get it out.  :-\

But I really, really want to like them. It's one of those situations where life would be easier if you could talk to them.

I think they're cuddly and nice. It's wasps and hornets I don't like.

I am terrified of wasps and hornets D: thankfully I don't think I've ever seen a hornet. I want to keep it that way :P

Well maybe you could just watch it from a distance until you get used to the idea of it. Have a close look and you might find it easier to be around something if its more familiar to you?
Not really sure but its worth a try.  :P

Otherwise, just open a window or something and let it fly out on its own. Either way they only live for a few days at a time I think.

I hope you don't need the bathroom haha.

I tried getting close, but it made me very nervous :P
I had to phone SotK for advice - I ended up plucking up the courage to push open the window and let it find it's own way out. :)

Maybe you should find some sort of pain comparison chart and find something equally as painful as a bee sting to experience so you don't fear the unknown pain. Unless you're really bad with pain.

Yeah, I don't think I have a low pain threshold or anything (I am super sensitive in the sense that if I knock against something it hurts a lot more than it should - but that's kind of unrelated.
I think it's the fear of getting stung that makes it worse.
I'd feel really bad if it killed the bee as well (although apparently all bumblebees can sting more than once anyway).

That's why you find something that stings like a bee but isn't a bee. Unfortunately Mohammed Ali is no longer available.

Bees are excellent :) It's a pity so many get killed by pesticides etc.

I think with a lot of animals, invertebrates especially, people end up with early childhood issues with them. One should of course be respectful of bees or wasps or spiders, but I suspect a lot of our hysteria about them could be solved if we didn't instil it in children from a very early age.
