Updated to include Jubal's visit to Venice last month.

I'm considering doing a short & impromptu (two nights or something) trip this week, either Maribor or Brno but not sure which. Any thoughts on either?

Brno is a lot larger than Maribor, if I'm not mistaken, so more likely to have museums and other attractions. It's also nearer to Vienna and with a rather better train service (a through train every 2 hours, plus connections).
I've only had a brief visit to Maribor, but as I recall it has a pleasant historic city centre, with a range of big hills immediately to the north and west, so probably opportunities for more outdoor activities. The rail service is two through trains a day, plus sporadic connections with a change at Graz and Spielfeld Strass (the Austrian border station).

I decided on Maribor in the end, in part because it's fairly small so should be possible to see a good amount of in the time. I'm doing the janky two-changes route out tomorrow, and coming back on a direct train on Thursday evening.
Will report back once I've been, of course :)

I have duly been and returned: report will be forthcoming when I have the time and energy to write it up (and do the additional research - they often involve quite a lot of Wiki trawls at the very least). :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm just wondering, would it make more sense for the order to be reverse-chronological rather than chronological in the list? That way people see the most recent things first rather than heading through all the older stuff.
Edit 26/03: added Three Accidents in Andalucía and reverse-chronologied the order (this is partly pettiness on my part because I think I've got marginally better at writing these coherently so I'd rather people didn't just pick my Vienna ramble first).

I've been wondering about sometime doing audio versions of these and putting them on the Exilian YouTube. I don't know if they'd get enough listeners to be worth the time spent though.

I've added the Ravenna and San Marino trip to the list. As one of the other participants, I should say that in addition to (once again) being an engaging write-up, it's also given me some insights that I missed at the time.

Thank you! :) And yes, I likewise added a lot to my knowledge post-hoc with additional reading, but it definitely paid off in terms of feeling I was fitting things together better in my head.
