The bank HSBC has recently announced it may move to Hong Kong in order to dodge UK taxes.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/banksandfinance/8363584/HSBC-reveals-plans-to-quit-London-for-Hong-Kong.html

Do you guys think it's fair that multinational corps. should be able to bounce around and find tax havens in this way?
How would you stop them, indeed is it possible?

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Creative Design Competition: Steel!
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:20:55 PM »
Yesh, that's right, we're having a competition! Yay!

The idea being to a) attract new people who want to do this and b) see how stunningly creative we all are.

The theme is "Steel". Just the one word.

You may enter with either;
- A poem
- A piece of descriptive (but not narrative) writing
- Some artwork, either "real" or computer designed
- Music or a monologue if that floats your boat more.

Entries must be posted (as links or directly for pictures) in this thread and this thread alone by March 20th to qualify. Judging will depend on the number of entries (the more we get, the higher calibre judge I can find).

Winner gets citizenship (if they haven't got it already), and a pat on the back and a special sig banner if they do.

Have fun!

Exilian Media / DRAMA: The Teacher
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:15:12 PM »
The Teacher is a short animation (20 mins) covering the career of William Allen, a catholic priest from England who fled from Protestantism and later rose to become a Cardinal and one of the guiding minds behind the Spanish Armada.

The script, music, and visuals (in AOEIII) were done by myself.

I play William Allen, and Andalus is Robert Parsons.

Other Exilian members involved include Dripping D as french theologian Jean Vendeville, I Forgot My Name as the Pope, Comrade_General as an Oxford priest, GMD as the Pope's Messenger, No1 Croat Fan as an English soldier, and Doomchild as Saint Edmund Campion.

The following bill is commended to the plaza by Calisthenis of Green Day:

Quote
I propose that, instead of a thread where a citizen proposes someone for citizenship, we have a forum for cittzen admission.

The Proposal Process
-- If a citizen would like to propose another member for citizenship, he/she must create a thread in the citizen admission forum. The title must be the name of the member proposed.
-- In the OP, there must be a paragraph from the proposed explaining why they should become a citizen. There must also be a paragraph from the proposer explaining why the member should be a citizen.
-- The Plaza will vote on the proposed admission to citizenship for a week.
-- A simple majority is needed for the proposed to become a citizen.

After the vote
-- After the vote, the thread will be archived in the Completed Citizen Votes sub-forum of the Completed Votes. (Which shall be created by this Bill)
-- The thread name will be changed like so:
[PASSED/FAILED]Membername (yes-no-abstain)
-- Depending on whether the applicant passes or fails, the Sebastokrator (or another Admin) will PM the member telling him/her of his/hers citizenship.

Archimedes' Workshop - 0AD Mods & Maps / Jubal's Maps
« on: January 22, 2011, 07:56:36 PM »
Here's all the maps I've made for 0 A.D., for your use and enjoyment.

To Install
Go to your 0AD folder, then go binaries -> data -> mods -> public. Then unzip public.zip, go to maps -> scenarios in the new unzipped file structure, and paste 'em there then unzip. You should be able to reach them ingame by selecting "All Maps" under the map filter when starting a game.

On Ubuntu, your 0ad folder will be buried in /usr/share/games/0ad. It won't have the maps/scenarios folders, so open up Nautilus as root (Alt+F2, gksudo nautilus) and enter your password, then navigate to /usr/share/games/0ad/mods/public and create a folder called 'maps' (without quotes) then inside that make one called 'scenarios' (without quotes). Then put your map files in there, and access them the same as above.

Jubal's Maps Pack for A13 Maghada:
This contains Barcania II, Colonia, Epidaurum, Nova Isla, and From the Mountains to the Sea in one pack:

Individual maps for Alpha 13:
Barcania II
This stormy-looking island map contains huge potential - a swathe of rugged inland forest cuts off an athenian, a carthaginian, and a briton village. Around the edges of the island, cliffs and coves bring huge potential for sheltered bases and ports, with the starting villages sheltering a few peninsulae or islands accessible only by muddy tracks. Barcania II updated with new factions as above (the original had 2x Hellenes, 1x Celts):

Colonia
A carthaginian colony is founded on the Celtic/Iberian coast - but the locals aren't going to give up without a fight! Carthage, Celts, and Iberians struggle over a central valley on a resource-rich and rugged map.
Screenie (spoilered for hugeness, taken on older version though new one is very similar):

Epidaurum
The map is actually based on the modern coastline (Cavtat in Croatia) and so bears no relation to Roman/Greek Epidaurum except the name and location basis. Three Greek villages (Macedonian, Athenian, Spartan) in two bays fight it out on the Illyrian coastline for supremacy - both on land and on the water.

From the Mountains to the Sea
A classic multiplayer designed map for one Gaul and one Athenian player. The Greeks start on an island, the Celts in the rugged and wild mountain regions of the map. The vast majority of the resources are clustered along the wide and almost indefensible coast, filled with light forests, marshes, and flat coastal plains. Whichever side controls the resources is more open to assault either from land or sea... the war is about to begin.
Screenie (spoilered for hugeness, taken on older version though new one is very similar):

Himalaya
Years after Alexander's retreat, it seemed as if the Macedonians had barely left anything in the Himalayan foothills near India. In fact, some of them had never left... 1v1 Macedon VS Mauryans.
Screenie (spoilered for hugeness, taken on older version though new one is very similar):

Nova Isla
For two players; greeks versus celts on an island. includes rough mountainous hills in the west, sweeping woods and grasslands in the east, marshes in the NE, and other such nice features. Pretty fun; a third player is there, for testing purposes mostly, and consists of a few shipwrecked sailors.

M&B Mods - The Explorer's Society / M&B Admin Needed
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:46:20 PM »
Okay, a job offer for anyone active around and online... Exilian's much loved M&B admin, Boyninja, has gone and gotten himself a regular job; this leaves us with a gap in our staffing. And so we're looking for an admin who can take care of our Mount & Blade section on the boards.
Site: http://www.exilian.co.uk/
Forum: http://s9.zetaboards.com/exilian/index/

Job Description
Essentially your task will be to promote the site, boost our M&B sections, increase activity, and get new mods and modders in as well. No prior experience is neccessary but feel free to put it in if you have anything relevant. You don't need to be a modder at all, but you will need to work closely with the modding community. We're interested in starting and recruiting for a site clan for Warband, too, so this is also potentially a good job for online gaming fans. Job perks include automatic patricianship (a rank jump that for normal members takes two public votes to achieve), a better coloured name, and the ability to appoint minions (if you can find any.)

To apply
Get an account if you're reading this and don't have one, and PM your application to me (Jubal) as head of admin staff there. Your application just needs to be a few sentences on why you'd make a good admin; posting around the site to get yourself noticed may also be helpful in promoting your application. Applicants will be submitted to a vote of Exilian's citizen members, lasting around a week.

Narnia Total War / Requests for aid
« on: January 09, 2011, 03:50:12 PM »
OK, here's what I need help with;

- Graphics. Most urgent one for now, we need new loading screens and a new main title.
- Modelling. I can do it without a modeller, but it'd be awesome as hell with one.
- Skinning. The more skinners we have, the faster we mod. Simples.
- Map. If someone else could do the regions, we get a campaign wayyy faster. I can tell you where I want them, so there's no research needed for this.
- Text. New names and other such text file tweaks.

Most of this is of course stuff I'll do myself given time, but the more we have working the faster we go.

I had an idea lately, that using Javascript it ought to be possible to write timed code to cycle througha  bunch of webpages. Using this, if you could work out (scripting wise) from a YouTube video's page how long it would take to run you could build a "playlister" that would cycle through youtube music clips rather than having to search for each one in a set individually or in some weird order.

Thoughts?
