Discussion and Debate - The Philosopher's Plaza / Labour Leadership
« on: September 04, 2010, 02:48:42 PM »
Here we go, last little bit of the way...

Any thoughts?

For non-Brits, the candidates are;
- David Miliband, pretty much continuity candidate with quite a bit of experience
- Ed Miliband, his younger brother, a bit more "fiery radical" type in style and considered to have more balls but possibly too leftwing for some of the electorate
- Ed Balls, a senior figure close to Gordon Brown. Good debater and effective politician but possibly too close to the last government.
- Andy Burnham, a straight-talking northerner concerned with equality quite a bit but not so liberal
- Diane Abbott, a leftwinger with no hope in hell.

We find out at the end of the month. :)

Time we did some real philosophy here...

Not that long ago, Bhutan became a democracy. However, this met very stiff resistance - not from the king or the royal family, who were very keen on the idea, but from the people. The Bhutanese monarchy is quite young, and more or less all their rulers so far have been pretty darn good at their job.

So here's the philosophical point; is it fair to give people democracy if they don't actually want it? On the other hand, is it fair to keep a (fundamentally good) monarch in power if they don't really want that either?

Forum Games - The Beer Cellar! / Philosophical Consequences
« on: August 15, 2010, 12:14:51 PM »
This is quite a simple game; all you have to do is take the previous statement and think of something that could, reasonably and logically, occur because of it.

So say I start with;

What if money did not exist?

Post 2;
If money did not exist chocolate coins would not exist either.

Post 3;
If chocolate coins did not exist children would be less happy at Christmas.

Post 4;
If children were less happy at Christmas...

You get the idea.

OKAY, to start then...

What if I (Jubal) ruled the world?

Some countries have very loose gun control, others very tight. Which is better...?

Computer Game Development - The Indie Alley / RPG ideas
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:58:06 PM »
Two ideas for RPGs to be written in Javascript/PHP/MySQL...

1. Adventurers of Ithrala
Set in the world of Raiders and Traders - literally. The players will go between the cities of R&T players, with different opportunities and problems to solve in each city based on what the city's owners are doing. Explore muddy villages and large cities, military repression and liberal low-tax governments, all created by real people! Quite a bit of hack-and-slash involved in a classic RPG style, but very much text-based button-pressing in style.

2. Esther's House
Teddybears versus toy soldiers, fighing over a deserted mansion. An idiosyncratic and very satirical dystopia of an RPG, this would certainly be wierd but definitely fun. Therw ouldn't be too many players, because players could only join as fast as the current players could gather materials (tin cans, kapok, fabric, needles, and so on) to create new bodies for their bear/soldier compatriots, this being the main aim of the game. It would work well as I could slowly expand the house room by room, allowing new locations to be added quite simply. A big focus on team play in this, some players would be the classic hack-and-slash archetypes of healers, fighters or tanks but others would need to be crafters and foragers through the different rules.

Any thoughts on either of these?

Welcome to Exilian Software! This is essentially the "consumer" thread, where there'll be a list of all our different creations thus far with brief descriptions and links, sorted by functions. Game Software is of course going to be in Exilian Games instead. All the software here is free for use, most of it will be open source as well. Please do not steal other people's work without giving them due credit, and certainly please don't attempt to sell our work for profit. Many thanks!

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Want a forum?
« on: July 11, 2010, 04:15:51 PM »
Anyone out there need web hosting space? You might want an art/film/video showcase, a place to discuss your band or for posting stories you're writing, or somewhere to organise a sports team. If so, Exilian is now offering free subforums inside our main site for just about any function you can think of. Post here or PM me for queries or submissions; we can probably do custom skins for your subforum if you need them, and other services such as password coding or possibly webpages/image galleries may be available on request. You need 2 people to request it before a forum is created, so bring your friends along!

Many thanks

Active Legislation / Bill - The New Exilian Deal PASSED 8-0-0
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:01:06 AM »
My lastest plan for boosting activity is to offer subforums in any offtopic areas to any members who want them; basically this will mean that people can use Exilian to host forumspace for their bands, RPG groups, mini movie studios, and whatever else they want.

So here we are;
Quote
1. Administrators shall be allowed to grant subforums at the lowest level to any member of Exilian who they deem has an appropriate reason for wanting one.
2. To apply, two members must PM the admin requesting the forum and supporting each other's bid.
3. Forums created in this way will be deleted after 2 months without activity on the part of the creator.
4. Any citizen may start an immediate vote calling for the removal of any such forum should they so wish.

A vicar has revived an ancient law to call members of her parish together for archery practice.

The Reverend Mary Edwards, of Collingbourne Ducis, near Marlborough, called residents to the village recreation ground on Friday.

Residents were rewarded for complying with the law with a bar, a barbecue and live music.

Church warden Mike Cox said: "It seems she's still entitled to do that."

I have never supported a Church of Englad actvity this much. Utter WIN.  :D

General Gaming - The Arcade / Haven and Hearth - Exilian's Colony
« on: June 09, 2010, 09:56:22 PM »
H&H is a free indie MMO;
http://www.havenandhearth.com/

Exilian runs the free trading colony of Barcania, with its port of Orentum.

FOR NEW PLAYERS:
To start at our village (you'll never find it if you don't), when you make a new character do NOT go to the ladder, go to the man in brown at the top of the screen, right click on him and type the hearth secret. You'll then pop up outside my hut, which isn't much but is prolly a bit better than being in the middle of nowhere.

FOR ALL PLAYERS:
PM me, on here, for the hearth secret.

The rules of Barcania are quite simple; don't be a dick. We're not forming a "village", and so you're welcome to be a member of another village or settlement. Basically you're allowed to fence off land as yours, as much as you feel you can manage. Don't "claim" land that people have already fenced/built on, since not all players in the city will necessarily be highlevel enough to do proper claims. Public buildings and market areas will exist, all wells will be public property. You're welcome to settle in Orentum under the same terms.

So do come on, we can build Barcania as a great new city!  :P

Current people in village;
- Jubal (Palantain)
- Marcus (Marcus)
- SOTK (Riofaal)
- Silver Wolf (John Shovelface)
