OO Programming / Tutorial Group One
August 21, 2012, 10:17:07 PM
This is the area for Tutorial Group One to discuss course notes, exercises, and anything else you need to in order to finish things successfully. I'll be dropping by on occasion to sort out anything that you can't sort yourselves/clear up issues that most people are struggling with.

Keep it above board, kids, and have fun!

OO Programming / Course Notes
August 21, 2012, 10:11:09 PM
Hello, all.

I'll update this post with course notes as and when I write them. They'll link to a PDF held on my Google account - this was the easiest way to do things, given the large amounts of code/images I need to give.

1. Introduction to basic Java and Netbeans: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2IUayB6YLFaX1Q3YmNOc1VONGM
2. Java Basics: Variables, Methods, Modifiers: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2IUayB6YLFaTWg4aUxqUG1ubFU
3. Java Basics: Repetition: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2IUayB6YLFabWE3czdWTnNZekE
4. Java Basics: Conditionals: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2IUayB6YLFaSnA2clI4UldWQlE

OO Programming / Re: Information, Introductions, Etc.
August 21, 2012, 10:00:19 PM
For Eclipse: Ignore most of the first half of the first note-sheet (which I'm working on as we speak), as it's just about Netbeans. However, follow the equivalent instructions in Eclipse and you'll arrive at the same place.

With that admin out the way, hello everyone. Seems like the Python programmers are in the house. I'm not surprised - there's a beauty in Python's simplicity. You'll be getting none of that with Java. I'll try and make it simple!

And on that note, I'd just like to introduce something I think is very important - tutor feedback. Just as I can tell you where you're going wrong with your code, you're all free to tell me where I'm going wrong with my teaching/tutoring/explanations. And I'd much appreciate constructive criticism, as I'm pretty new to this.

So nice to meet you all! First notes will be up in a few minutes.

OO Programming / Re: Information, Introductions, Etc.

Hello, CG (I'm shortening you, I hope that's not too informal). I also like my sci-fi so if I ever run out of work to give you we'll have something to talk about.

As for your experience with C#, please excuse any early lessons which are sort-of patronising - which goes for everyone else, as well. When I say this course starts from the beginning, believe me it does!

OO Programming / Information, Introductions, Etc.
August 12, 2012, 01:17:01 AM
Hello, kids.

You'll get information on assessment, etc, in due time. For now, if you don't have an IDE or compiler compatible with Java, you can keep yourselves busy with downloading Netbeans and all the Java gear you'll need (the instructions are pretty self-explanatory so I'm sure you'll all be fine).

Other than that, you probably all know each other but I don't know you. I'm new to these parts, and mostly here for reasons relating to this course. So who are we all? I'm Liz, a third-year Computer Science student who enjoys building small robots and writing trashy novels. Java's my first language, so I'm pretty confident in using it to teach the object-orientated philosophy.

So for now, introductions. Detailed course information and assessment information coming up!

World building please! If there's no space then I'd like to do the OOProgramming  :)

or if possible, both  :D

Just to say you are welcome on OO Programming, regardless of any other courses you're taking/other commitments/etc. I'm just pleased to have the interest!

I think this is what I mean by 'inevitable' - once I saw how Federer was playing, I didn't see any other outcome (and Murray is not well-known for his gracious handling of pressure on the big stage). But I don't think winning a Slam is out of his reach, once he gets a handle on things.

Murray's defeat was inevitable, if a little bit sad. I'm more concerned that I won't have Grand Slam statistics to fill my never-ending summer days with... I assume I'm not the only person who watches tennis for this reason? Or does a Year of Hell (read: 'a year of a science degree') just do this to you?

22. A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
23. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
24. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
25. Foundation - Isaac Asimov

Because you'll never get to 101 at this rate.

Boozers and secret labs? I'm going to like it here!

Thanks for all the warm-hearted welcomes, too.

I offered Jubal my services for the Exilian Academy, and I figured it'd be rude not to introduce myself. I'm Liz, and I'm in my third year of a degree in Artificial Intelligence. When I'm not playing with robots or living in the library, I like reading spy novels and programming text-based adventure games.
I'm even less interesting than I sound, I promise you. So don't get your hopes up.
