Announcements! The Town Crier! / A triumph for The Khan!
« on: August 11, 2013, 08:31:26 AM »
As the title of the post may have led you to infer, we have our next triumph to give out. The Khan, who has recently returned to the site after a moderately lengthy absence, has now earned his first triumph.

The Khan has stood for (and been elected for) a number of staff posts during his time on Exilian. He has also gained triumph points for proposing a number of new citizens and a motion on the plaza. The Khan has uploaded a number of poems and, more recently, drawings to the site which have earned him many points.

Congratulations to The Khan! :)

General Chatter - The Boozer / HUGS!
« on: August 03, 2013, 10:30:14 PM »
Right friends!

CG needs hugs from random weirdos he knows from the internets! The lack of them is apparently giving him a headache. We need to fix this. I think we probably class as random weirdos he knows from the internets, or at least some of us do.

EVERYONE GIVE COMRADE_GENERAL HUGS! :D

After some recent discussion around the site, I though it would be good idea to get a thread up where people could say whether there are any courses they might be interested/willing/blackmailed into running for/taking at the Academy.

So, things to discuss/state on this thread:
 - What subjects do you know about that might lend itself to being taught in the Academy?
 - Would you like to run a course on it? [OF COURSE YOU WOULD!]
 - How much time do you think you might have for putting into this course? And when might this be?
 - Which of the courses suggested would you be interested in taking?
 - Which of the courses not yet suggested would you be interested in taking? :D

Also, if you know someone else on this site is good at something but they might not think of it, do suggest too.. Either here, or possibly to them separately so they don't feel pressured to volunteer.

[Of course, Jubal has already made a thread like this, but since I'm practically stealing his job by writing this, who cares! Write on this thread, write on the other.. doesn't matter all the much to me :)]

I shall make a list!

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Another Triumph!
« on: July 13, 2013, 11:28:54 PM »
Yesterday I was looking at the triumph points tables and I noticed that there is another triumph that needs awarding!

So, congratulations to comrade_general who has earned his second triumph!

CG has worked hard to produce excellent mods (in particular major releases of Narnia and WHTW) and was awarded triumph points for getting a new modding team on the site. Other achievements include reaching 4000, and subsequently 5000, posts and helping with the Atheniad last year. CG also stood for Basileus and won the position.

Well done! :D

Announcements! The Town Crier! / A triumphant day!
« on: July 05, 2013, 01:20:00 PM »
It is my pleasure to announce that we have two new triumphs to award! Both Phoenixguard09 and Jubal have now both amassed the necessary 300 triumph points.

Phoenixguard09
Proposing two motions on the plaza and writing a couple of short stories, as well as reaching 3000 posts on Exilian, are just some of the things Phoenixguard has been awarded triumph points for. Also on the list are encouraging Ladyhawk to join the site, successfully proposing Deathnade’s citizenship and getting up ridiculously early for a staff meeting.

Jubal
Our recently elected Basileus has now surpassed 8000 posts. Jubal has been awarded a large number of triumph points for the creative writing that he has done (in particular A Slave’s Tale and a quite substantial selection of poems) along with beginning an AAR. Also on the list are the release of A Game of Colleges and the citizenship of luckynumber13 and Rob. This is Jubal’s second triumph.

I believe both congratulations and assorted raucous celebrations are in order!

I wondering what people's opinions on language learning methods were generally (my mother is a linguist)? And also if people hard heard of Duolingo. It got thrown at me during my A2 year and I recently looked back at it.

It seems like a pretty good idea to me and it's got the repetition required for language learning. I'm currently using it to try to fix up my german skills but I'm not sure how good it would be with respect to learning a new language from scratch. It's limited to only a few languages at the moment and the format can be slightly irritating at times but I can definitely see it improving.

Thoughts and opinions? Cries of hatred? Hurls of assorted rotting food items?

Also, what languages do people speak?

[Not sure if this is the correct place to put this thread, move away if incorrect]

What do people think of these?

I can see where it's coming from but I feel somewhat hypocritical agreeing with them, being a somewhatmorethanaveragelysuccessful product of the English school system. The thing is, I'm not sure how much that was down to my school. I still feel the way I think about problems is kind of sub-optimal.

Thoughts? Opinions? Cries of outrage? Yells of support for our wonderful education secretary?
