Stories and AARs / A Democratic Sort of Strategy AAR (New Chapter Up)
« on: November 19, 2013, 06:17:44 AM »
Well, my life is relatively devoid of serious occupations at the moment, and I have been wanting to start a serious AAR for... well, a very long time now. And, since the Paradox, Taleworlds, and Total War forums are drowning in AAR's, I figured I might as well bring my story-telling talents (if talents they be) to you lovely citizens of Exilian.

I am open to suggestions as to games, prospective strategies, narrative styles, nations to rule, and anything else yall can come up with. A list of games that are available to me on my present, somewhat rubbish, computer, will be stuck at the bottom of this post.

Oh, and I hope thread titles can be changed after I settle on a game and suitably awesome (or ridiculous) name, or else I am going to feel rather silly.

Games:

Age Of Empires II: It might be a bit odd to do an AAR of it, but it would be possible, and potentially interesting.

Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion. A delightful classic, even with its tendency to crash and corrupt saves if I so much as breath wrong.

Rome Total War/Barbarian Invasion: Playing the Western Roman Empire in BI was the single most stressful event in my childhood.

Civilization III: I haven't actually tried it on this computer, but it is probably old enough to work.

Crusader Kings: If this is chosen, it must be admitted that I sort of suck at it. Which could end up being very... exciting.

Europa Universalis II: All those nations. So many choices.

Victoria: I once laboriously kept Austria-Hungary from dissolving for the entire game. I am excessively proud of that.

Hearts Of Iron II: Nothing to be proud of here. The one time I played, I rather spectacularly lost the war for the Allies..

Two Thrones: I have literally never played this game. Got it in the Strategy Pack, with my other Grand Paradox games.

Crowns Of The North: Same as Two Thrones. I don't even know where these are set.

The Operational Art Of War III: Bit of a lesser known game. Never seen any AAR's for it, but I think I could coax something from it.

--------------------
These are all I can think of, off the top of my head.
Here's hoping for some audience participation.  ;D

P.S. I reserve the right to refuse to play Carthage or the Turks.
Carthago delenda est, and the other burnt my beloved Byzantium.

The Welcome Hall - Start Here! / An Actual Introduction.
« on: November 04, 2013, 08:21:03 PM »
Well, I am he that was formerly Lord Blaiddmor.
I have decided to more or less ditch the whole alter-ego thing. It was fun for awhile, but after hanging out on Exilian for a bit, I started to realize that I actually really liked it here. And it is sort of difficult to actively participate in a community while pretending to be a clueless fantasy noble and his entourage. So I changed my name up a bit (because keeping the name of a character I made up seemed odd), and intend to be (hopefully) much more active.

As for an actual introduction, well..
I originally found Exilian while searching for Mount And Blade mods, when I stumbled across the Extended Factions mod (which I am still waiting patiently for news on, as I am convinced it is the coolest M&B mod idea in a very long time) on the Taleworld's forums. I then ended up getting linked back to Exilian a fair amount more, through various excellent mods that the community here has released, before I finally gave in and made an account.

Random details.

I mod a bit, on a strictly amateur level; mostly tweaking Rome Total War (and good ol' Medieval Total War, when I can get it working), although I have experimented on other games as well. I am looking into getting a bit more serious about it.

I also write. Again, I am not terribly good at it, but hoping to improve myself.

I play guitar, rather well, if I may say so myself. I enjoy playing virtually any sort of music, but prefer overly grandiose rock, celtic, and post-hardcore stuff (of the melodic variety), are my specialities.

I mess around in a variety of other areas, but those are the only really relevant hobbies I have. I am also interested in language, and I am learning several at the moment (with varying levels of success), and I enjoy tinkering with anything I can get my hands on, and creating things.

With all that being said, I hope I can contribute something useful to this delightful little community.

(Pinned to the notice board of the Blaiddmor Family Embassy, you see an official looking sheet of parchment with very blandly correct hand-writing on it.)

As His Excellency, Lord Blaiddmor is currently away, dealing with internal affairs in the glorious nation of -name redacted-, he has given me the temporary position of Emissary to the Glorious City of Exilian. He really does honor me too much, with this new addition to my work load. As my first official decision, he did me the honor of announcing that I have decided a official reading room of sorts, where you gracious ladies and gentlemen of Exilian may hear the latest communication from Lord Blaiddmor himself about the situation in -name redacted-. He mentioned that he may also send the writings of various generals and relations of his, on such varied subjects as agriculture, husbandry, warfare, and possibly even the latest popular ditty that is sweeping the nation. In short, while this is first and foremost, a official embassy, we will also endeavor to keep you all up to date on the latest incredibly important and immensely consequential happenings in -name redacted-, in the interests of fostering better understanding between our people. Packages should arrive fairly regularly, unless events interrupt the somewhat awkward courier system we have set up. In fact, one has already arrived, and I shall try and have the contents up for your viewing before too long.  His Excellency has announced that he is also doing us the great honor of accepting letters, if you wish to inquire about any specific details of the ongoing war, or really anything at all, I am sure he would be entirely too happy to answer. At present, there should be a letter or two from Lord Blaiddmor in the reading-room. It is right between the kitchen and the torture chamber, you can't miss it.

Sincerely,
Bob, Clerk of the Noble And Ancient House of Blaiddmor, and Temporary Emissary to the City of Exilian.

(Laying on a ornate and antique wooden table, in the reading room, there is a rather damp sheet of parchment, written on in very elegant and ornate hand-writing.)

Greetings, citizens of Exilian. I do hope things are doing quite as splendidly there as they are here. The war against -name redacted- rags on, but I appear to be gaining the upper hand nevertheless, as is to be expected against traitors and scoundrels. Three cities and two castles have fallen within the last week, thanks in part to an interesting tactic I read about in the Exilian Library. Something along the lines of a giant wooden horse.  But at the moment we are no longer involved in sieges, but are hunting down -name redacted-, the despicable fool and turncoat, with what is left of his army. They have unfortunately fled into one of the least pleasant areas nearby, the forest of -name redacted-. We keep having to cut down bands of these blasted, short, fur-covered creatures with sticks, and the damp is rather all-pervasive, but aside from that, the march seems to be going quite smoothly. Also, I have sent a message to the Emperor, asking for permission to send uncensored communications, and if he condescends to agree, I'll be sure to send some maps along with the next letter, which should also be a bit more detailed. I'll also be sending my cousin -name redacted- back to Exilian, if I can spare him, so that he can answer any questions you may have about me, or the finer points of the war, or anything you may want to know about life here. But I am afraid this letter must be cut short, the short things seem to be causing a ruckus again, one of their spears just came through my tent. Farewell ladies and gentlemen.

Sincerely,
Lord Blaiddmor, One And Only True Heir Of The Ancient And Magnificent House Of Bladdmor

I bring you greetings from my own city of -name redacted- and many and splendid gifts from my great and noble king, His Lordship -name redacted-. My proper name and title is -name redacted-, but as the language of my land tends to cause trouble to most foreign tongues, I normally go by the name Blaiddmor when travelling abroad. I have been sent by my king as an emissary, to observe and participate in your society to the fullest extent possible for a foreigner, so as to promote greater understanding and good feeling between our people. While here, I also intend to continue my studies and writings, and perhaps submit some to the great library of Exilian for your perusal. I look forward to my time here, and hope it shall be beneficial for all.

Sincerely,
                Lord Blaiddmor
