Making my way through the ever spectacular Aubrey/Maturin series, for something like the eighth time.
Lost to the West, by Lars Brownworth. Quite a engaging read on the Byzantines, although rather clearly biased about some of the personalities he discusses.
And Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman. Which has been utterly fantastic so far.
Not sure what to read once I have finished tackling this bunch of books. I am considering re-trying the Game of Thrones series, although I couldn't even bring myself to finish the first book last time.

Pentagathus: I have a feeling this is the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship. ;D

And Jubal and CG, it is, of course, a pleasure to meet you both outside a fictional persona. :) I am a pretty huge fan of both of yalls works, and hope I can learn a lot from hanging around here. And yep, I fully intend to stick my nose in just about everywhere.

Well, I am he that was formerly Lord Blaiddmor.
I have decided to more or less ditch the whole alter-ego thing. It was fun for awhile, but after hanging out on Exilian for a bit, I started to realize that I actually really liked it here. And it is sort of difficult to actively participate in a community while pretending to be a clueless fantasy noble and his entourage. So I changed my name up a bit (because keeping the name of a character I made up seemed odd), and intend to be (hopefully) much more active.

As for an actual introduction, well..
I originally found Exilian while searching for Mount And Blade mods, when I stumbled across the Extended Factions mod (which I am still waiting patiently for news on, as I am convinced it is the coolest M&B mod idea in a very long time) on the Taleworld's forums. I then ended up getting linked back to Exilian a fair amount more, through various excellent mods that the community here has released, before I finally gave in and made an account.

Random details.

I mod a bit, on a strictly amateur level; mostly tweaking Rome Total War (and good ol' Medieval Total War, when I can get it working), although I have experimented on other games as well. I am looking into getting a bit more serious about it.

I also write. Again, I am not terribly good at it, but hoping to improve myself.

I play guitar, rather well, if I may say so myself. I enjoy playing virtually any sort of music, but prefer overly grandiose rock, celtic, and post-hardcore stuff (of the melodic variety), are my specialities.

I mess around in a variety of other areas, but those are the only really relevant hobbies I have. I am also interested in language, and I am learning several at the moment (with varying levels of success), and I enjoy tinkering with anything I can get my hands on, and creating things.

With all that being said, I hope I can contribute something useful to this delightful little community.

This makes me a very happy person. I am downloading as I type, although I'll probably have to put off playing tomorrow. Forgive me if you already answered and I was just too sleep-deprived to notice, but is this mod-foldered?

The Byzantine army. The glorious Kataphractoi have always been semi-legendary to me, from a childhood full of Age of Empires 2 and Medieval Total War, and to be able to ride around with a few dozen of them at my back would be the height of happiness. Definitely would love some Arabic mercenaries in there too, obviously a few turcopoles..

And I could have it too, if a certain phoenixguard came back to work on his mod..

Although, as the poster above me says, some nicely implemented Meso-American troops could be incredibly fun. Smacking someone in the head with a macauhuitl would be simply awesome.

Brief missive from the head tester of the AMSTS

I have run into a problem with the sea, as it happens. I am incapable of sailing from Atlantis to the mainland. I can go a short distance out to sea, but then it tells me that the terrain is invalid for my unit. Is this a feature, where I need a certain type of event or ship, to cross the sea?

Preliminary notes, after brief testing.

Began running simulation on the mighty Atlantean Empire earlier, and wanted to send in my first thoughts, before I got so sucked into it that I forgot.

Things to keep in mind are that I am, unless mentioned otherwise, playing M/M and on Large unit setting instead of Huge and VH/VH, which seems to be the preferred set-up for all the strategy gaming masochists out there, who have decent computers.

It is running fine so far, and quite enjoyable, although rather easy in the early years. The only nearby enemy to worry about is the rebel settlement to the north, and while that has a substantial garrison, Atlantis is rolling in money at the moment and can basically throw spearmen and javelinmen at the problem until they drown in bodies. After that, no invasions will likely be forthcoming, at least for a very long time, and Atlantis is free to bring the light of glorious civilization to the barbarians of the Atlantic coast with little to no opposition. Or rather, no opposition until Rome gets its act together. I have not gotten that far into the game though, so I can't speak as to how well Atlantean arms and bravery will fare against the legions of the Senatus Populusque Romanus.

The unit roster is interesting, and a good selection, although I lament the lack of proper heavy cavalry. (STATEMENT REMOVED)

Overall, it is very enjoyable so far. I absolutely love mods that add new factions and other assorted things, while keeping the vanilla-feel, and this is one of the best mods of that sort that I have played. I did have a few suggestions, which you are obviously free to think about or ignore as you see fit, since you obviously know what you are going for with this, better than I. (STATEMENT REMOVED)

Other random note. I love the fact that the Atlantean culture is Punic, as I always pictured them as being similar to the Phoenicians.

Anyways, that is just my early thoughts and musings on it. Fantastic job so far, and I will have more for you once I actually get further into a game.

Signed,
John McKintire, Head Simulation Tester for the AMSTS

The following statement is from the head of the AMSTS.

There appeared to be some confusion amongst my testers about the exact installation procedures required for your simulation. Such problems have been dealt with, as have my clueless subordinates. I am happy to report that the before-mentioned simulation is now running perfectly smoothly.

-the following is printed on official-seeming paper, with a small water mark that has been carefully removed-
The newly formed Ambassadorial Military Simulation Testing Squadron of his Majesty, Lord Blaiddmor, would like to congratulate the officer in church of this seemingly excellent simulation program. We ourselves will be running test simulations on it, over the next few days, to determinate whether or not it will be suitable for the planning of -phrase redacted-.
Our official verdict will be forthcoming.

Signed,
The Deputy Under-Secretary of the AMSTS

(Pinned to the notice board of the Blaiddmor Family Embassy, you see an official looking sheet of parchment with very blandly correct hand-writing on it.)

As His Excellency, Lord Blaiddmor is currently away, dealing with internal affairs in the glorious nation of -name redacted-, he has given me the temporary position of Emissary to the Glorious City of Exilian. He really does honor me too much, with this new addition to my work load. As my first official decision, he did me the honor of announcing that I have decided a official reading room of sorts, where you gracious ladies and gentlemen of Exilian may hear the latest communication from Lord Blaiddmor himself about the situation in -name redacted-. He mentioned that he may also send the writings of various generals and relations of his, on such varied subjects as agriculture, husbandry, warfare, and possibly even the latest popular ditty that is sweeping the nation. In short, while this is first and foremost, a official embassy, we will also endeavor to keep you all up to date on the latest incredibly important and immensely consequential happenings in -name redacted-, in the interests of fostering better understanding between our people. Packages should arrive fairly regularly, unless events interrupt the somewhat awkward courier system we have set up. In fact, one has already arrived, and I shall try and have the contents up for your viewing before too long.  His Excellency has announced that he is also doing us the great honor of accepting letters, if you wish to inquire about any specific details of the ongoing war, or really anything at all, I am sure he would be entirely too happy to answer. At present, there should be a letter or two from Lord Blaiddmor in the reading-room. It is right between the kitchen and the torture chamber, you can't miss it.

Sincerely,
Bob, Clerk of the Noble And Ancient House of Blaiddmor, and Temporary Emissary to the City of Exilian.

(Laying on a ornate and antique wooden table, in the reading room, there is a rather damp sheet of parchment, written on in very elegant and ornate hand-writing.)

Greetings, citizens of Exilian. I do hope things are doing quite as splendidly there as they are here. The war against -name redacted- rags on, but I appear to be gaining the upper hand nevertheless, as is to be expected against traitors and scoundrels. Three cities and two castles have fallen within the last week, thanks in part to an interesting tactic I read about in the Exilian Library. Something along the lines of a giant wooden horse.  But at the moment we are no longer involved in sieges, but are hunting down -name redacted-, the despicable fool and turncoat, with what is left of his army. They have unfortunately fled into one of the least pleasant areas nearby, the forest of -name redacted-. We keep having to cut down bands of these blasted, short, fur-covered creatures with sticks, and the damp is rather all-pervasive, but aside from that, the march seems to be going quite smoothly. Also, I have sent a message to the Emperor, asking for permission to send uncensored communications, and if he condescends to agree, I'll be sure to send some maps along with the next letter, which should also be a bit more detailed. I'll also be sending my cousin -name redacted- back to Exilian, if I can spare him, so that he can answer any questions you may have about me, or the finer points of the war, or anything you may want to know about life here. But I am afraid this letter must be cut short, the short things seem to be causing a ruckus again, one of their spears just came through my tent. Farewell ladies and gentlemen.

Sincerely,
Lord Blaiddmor, One And Only True Heir Of The Ancient And Magnificent House Of Bladdmor

It is with deep regret that we must announce, due to unforeseeable circumstances that have arisen in Lord Blaiddmor's home city of
-name redacted-, in the glorious land of -name redacted-, he must withdraw indefinitely.
Orders are being drafted as I write, copies of his original instructions, to be dispatched immediately to whatever individual the esteemed Council deems suitable to take command.
At this time, it is unknown when he will be able to return, but he hopes his other obligations will not prove too lengthy, and that he will be back before too long, and ready to once again do the council's bidding in whatever foreign land they may then find themselves embroiled in. Once again, Lord Blaiddmor would like to express his very real regret at his sudden disappearance, and hopes it has not inconvenienced any of you too terribly.

Sincerely,
Bob, Clerk of the Noble And Ancient House Of Blaiddmor

(Here there is a separate piece of parchment tacked on to the letter, considerably more ragged, blotched with ink and bloodstains, and written in a fine and elegant, but somewhat rushed, handwriting.)

Greetings, esteemed council members. Really not much time to write. Assault on the walls soon. Sitting outside the walls of -name smudged and illegible- waiting for my cousin -name smudged and illegible- to give up and admit I am the legitimate heir. Just have 10-20 more castles and several more cities to -several words scratched out- to convince peacefully of my ability to rule justly and fairly over all. Shouldn't take me too long, and I'll be back to your lovely city of Exilian. If any of you..

(Here the parchments is charred and illegible)

Sincerely,
Lord Blaiddmor, One And Only True Heir Of The Ancient And Magnificent House Of Bladdmor

I am penning this communication from my headquarters in Memphis. I received several invitations to reside in the palace, from the generals Dizazelmis and Satres, but I have no desire to get involved in their squabbling, so I set my base of operations in house adjacent to the barracks, where I could get a better feel for the mood of the troops. The owner seemed likely to object, until I took him aside and politely explained that Thracians like to use dissenters and malcontents as ammunition for their artillery. I have been reviewing the military situation, and it seems grim indeed. I shall give a brief summary, which will hopefully give you all a decent understanding of the less then delightful mess we find ourselves in.
The city of Memphis finds herself besieged. Outside of her walls is a significant force, consisting of (according to our patchy intelligence) at least 1100 legionnaires, around 300 auxilia of various sorts, roughly 200 cavalry, and a 300 strong force of elite Praetorians. As far as I know, all these troops are well trained, and supplied with fine weapons. In contrast, within Memphis, we have a newly levied, untrained, and poorly equipped force of roughly 400 pikemen and 500 archers.
To the south, outside of Thebes, we have besieged Thebes, with an army of approximately 600 pikemen, 300 peltasts, and a smallish rabble of barbarians with falxes. Nasty, uncivilized weapons, falxes. Within Thebes is no more then a skeleton force. Outside, and to our rear, is a mercenary band of around 800 Libyan skirmishers, some hoplites, and a few worrying elephants, led by Aulus Varus, a Roman general, of whom we know little. Behind him, is a force equal to his own, although we know nothing of the composition, as of yet. Victory is a very real possibility there, if the Thracian commander in the area can defeat them individually.
Alexandria has a decent force of roughly 700 pikemen, 300 peltasts and archers, and another rabble of unlettered barbarians, with uncouth weapons, and it seems to be safe from the Romans, for the time being at least.
My knowledge of the situation to the east of Egypt is rather less exact, as it has been sometime since any of our couriers made it past the Roman lines.
From what we know, it seems that there is a ceasefire with Pontus, although they refuse to move the considerable armies they have gathered on our border. The Egyptian Pharaoh is marching across the desert outside of Bostra, waiting for an opening, with a large army. However, all those cities have large, well-trained armies, and there seems to be no weak spot for him to exploit as of now.
So the question is, what strategy should I attempt?
Egypt proper is beleaguered, and unlikely to last long without assistance.
The eastern provinces can supply that assistance, but at the risk of losing them to the waiting forces of Pontus and Egypt.
I am open to suggestions as to what my priorities should be. No matter what I choose to protect, there will be some losses. It is merely a matter of damage control for now.

Sincerely,
Lord Blaiddmor, Temporary Marshall of the Imperial Thracian Army, Peer of the Exilian Council For The Strategic Interference In
The Affairs Of Random Nations In Alternate Universes

P.S. I do hope my message arrives in a reasonable amount of time. The trip here really was horrendous. One of our men attempted to explain to me how it works, but he was a native, and there were linguistic issues. He kept repeating the word 'wormhole', and pointing at the tunnel we came through. If one of you could pop down to the Citizen's Library, and look it up in a Thracian dictionary, I would be much obliged.

Apologies to all for any inconvenience I may have caused there, I have been off stalking the fabled wild boar of Exilian for most of the past week, and I forgot to announce my departure. Due to my guide's unfortunate mishap with his spear though, I'll be be holed up in the city for the foreseeable future, so if no one else has started, I would be more then happy to lead these valiant Thracians, and if someone else has already hopped in, then I am perfectly happy to wait as well.

Sincerely,
               Lord Blaiddmor

This looks quite interesting. I have done the migration thing before, but never with the Thracians. I would love to do a turn with this, if possible, whenever everyone else has had a shot. Although I don't normally play at VH/VH, so I can't promise my rule won't end in burning cities and the weeping of Thracian widows and orphans.

Sincerely,
                Lord Blaiddmor

Many thanks to you all for your warm welcome. I am confident that my stay here will be pleasant indeed.

Sincerely,

I bring you greetings from my own city of -name redacted- and many and splendid gifts from my great and noble king, His Lordship -name redacted-. My proper name and title is -name redacted-, but as the language of my land tends to cause trouble to most foreign tongues, I normally go by the name Blaiddmor when travelling abroad. I have been sent by my king as an emissary, to observe and participate in your society to the fullest extent possible for a foreigner, so as to promote greater understanding and good feeling between our people. While here, I also intend to continue my studies and writings, and perhaps submit some to the great library of Exilian for your perusal. I look forward to my time here, and hope it shall be beneficial for all.

Sincerely,
                Lord Blaiddmor
