The Great Baths - RTW Discussion / Idea for a Rome Mod.
« on: July 13, 2010, 01:21:12 PM »
Just a quick question,  Where the :) do i start?  I could read all the topics, but i wouldnt really get much.  Any suggestions on what to do 1st?  I tried playing with the map editor once, made a battle, but then could never get the side i wanted to control to work.  Just need a nice starting point then i can add to my knowledge from there.

Yeah, "The Warriors" is a modern (well 70's) re-working of Xenophons tale.

I really would like to try my hand at some modding.  Any pointers in the right direction you can offer me, for help/info/tutorials etc?

I thought the boys who have Sparta:TW based on the Moddb site were using your PI mod?  I mentioned it to them, i assumed they had contacted you?

Have a look.

General, hope you did'nt mind, it was me who put the Sparta:TW boys onto you.  They had somehow lost all the data they had made and i remembered you saying you didnt think you would ever finish this off.

And, i always like your PI mod, so it would be a shame to see it goto waste.  Hope they do it some credit.

The Great Baths - RTW Discussion / Idea for a Rome Mod.

OK, im not a modder, and know jack ***t about anything other than putting them onto my PC.

But i had a good idea for a Rome mod.

It would be based on "Anabasis" or "The Persian Expedition" in english, by Xenophon (one of the loading screen quotes in Rome is his from this book.).  It was one of Alexander the Great's favorite books and is based on real events, as Xenophon was elected as one of the generals to lead them later.  There are also other versions to compare his to, but his is the most widely know.

Basically, about 10'000 Greeks and other assorted troops get conned by the brother and Satrap of the king of Persia into attacking him and trying to usurp his throne.  They travel deep into the Persian Empire, fight a battle, loose, then have to fight all the way back to the Bosphorus to try and get back to Greece.  They fight Persians, local tribes, loose all their generals, fall out amongst themselves until finally getting back to Greece.  A good old Greek tradgey.  Then they are hired by a Thracian king to kick out some other tribes, then are hired by the Spartans to go back to Ionia to fight the Persians again.  After this they end up back in Greece involved in other battles.

Clearly theres alot that goes on and cant all be told in one post.  Even if no-one picks up the idea, i can recommend it as a good read to any fan of warfare and good old adventure stories.  Its quite an epic tale.

I had a few ideas for implementing a mod where you basiclly just control 1 army, dont keep towns, just sack them.  I could imagine all sorts of ambush scenarios, raids, full blown battles and maybe starvation.

Anyone interested in hearing more, let me know.  Incidently, the book is about

General Gaming - The Arcade / A decent Waterloo sim?
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:09:17 AM »
@silver wolf. Yep, that was the only battle sim you used to really be able to get. I remember a series of games which covered several big ones including waterloo, austerlitz, quata-bras, borodino, gettysburg etc. There was also great battles of Caesar with several of his best one in it. Ah, the days of owning a 486 pc.

Just really after a good representation of the battle of Waterloo. Not interested in empire building or resource management, just want to re-fight that battle.

Hi all,

Anyone know of a decent Waterloo sim? I used to have one on the Atari ST years ago used 3D vector graphics (cutting edge at the time), and a turned based one on the PC about 10 years ago played on a hexagon map.

After something quite strategic, I don't mind about graphics but half decent would be nice.

I already have the Napoleonic mod for Rome. After something with correct army sizes.

Any suggestions, let me know.

Cheers

Hi,

I have no modding, 3D modeling or any type of programing experience.  I am a very keen student of ancient warfare, Greek, Roman, anything to do with the ancient world of warfare really.  So if you need any research conducted, i can help.  Battles, units, technology, weapons, leaders, whatever you need.

Just wondering if you are including the nation of Isreal as a horde type faction like in Barbarian Invasion?  Or they starting in the Sinai desert where they rested for 40 years while they grew and trained their army until it was strong enough to attack?

Cheers

Hello again.

Shame there about the lack of interest in Rome:Total War, its clearly the better of the last few games(except maybe Shogun).  I was dissapointed in Medieval, just really Rome with new skins and a few extra bells and whistles, and Empire not fantastic.  I tried making a few custom battles with the editor myself, but couldnt get them to work right.  If you need some help with anything, let me know.  I know Rome not really that historicaly accurate, so i can always help with that.

Cheers

Hi,

Love the mod, love greek warfare, more poetic than grinding, crushing romans.  I know nothing at all about programing, modding or graphic design or anything else, but i have been a gamer for over 20 years.

I was wondering if you needed any help with constant beta testing, or anything else?  Im also a very keen military history buff, so always up for reasearch if needed.

Just really like the mod and would like to contribute if possible.

Cheers
