General Chatter - The Boozer / Awesome picture thread
« on: December 06, 2008, 01:07:55 PM »
we have a funny picture thread, but sometimes a picture is so awe inspiring yo wish to share it, so I created this thread to solve the problem.
Oh and if there's a story behind it, do a direct link to the picture

General Chatter - The Boozer / Wake up calls
« on: November 29, 2008, 03:15:11 AM »
Mainly from curiosity, partly from being too brain dead to know if this is a good thing to ask but what the hey, right?

WHat do you guys (and girls) wake up to in the morning. The drone of an alarm? Whale song? Thrash Metal? The frantic hammering of parents at the door because you'll be late again?

Me?
I have a 2 stage system, my CD player goes off with either Viva la Vida,Hot Fuss or 6DOIT(white noise is an odd wake up call)
then after 5-15 mins, depending on what I set up, my phone goes off with the crashing piano of Apocalypse Please

General Chatter - The Boozer / Favourite Fantasy Weapon

Favourite Fantasy weapon thread: as it says on the tin, what is your favourite fantasy weapon

Mine?

The Possible Sword, a sword capable of making every possible (no matter how improbable) stroke that could occur at a point in time, meaning the user can attack and defend against any number of attackers. Think of a coin, lets call it a fact coin, it will land heads or tails, or maybe on its side, but that isn't probable. Now we have the Possible coin, it can land on either face or its side, or at an angle or any other deviation, and will do all these at the same time. The same concept is what the Probable Sword uses, it 'mines' all the possibilities using a little clockwork device, and makes all of them happen in an instant, meaning there are a near infinate number of wielders all preforming an action at the same time

there are, however, downsides

the first is the clockwork that 'mines' the possibilities, giving the user its immense power, cannot be rewound, meaning that after time, the sword will fail, returning it to a diamond hard ceramic shortsword (not too bad)

the second is that it requires a certain type of skill, and lack of one, to use it. A perfect swordsman will make the best possible stroke, meaning the sword has no other possibilities to 'mine', so a very skilled swordsman will have no reason to use it. A novice may make a mistake and there is the possibility it could be fatal, but because of the Possible Swords method, it will happen. What is needed is an in-between style, so there is no chance a self harming blow will occur, yet still allowing as many possible moves in a given position. As an analogy, think of chess a bad player will often make mistakes, and a perfect player wastes their skill on anyone less than perfect as each move is part of a definite plan, a mediocre player will not make a bad move, but can often make move that don't progress the game any faster and generally does not plan more than a few moves ahead.

General Chatter - The Boozer / Favourite Fantasy setting
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:29:33 AM »
As the titles says, what is YOUR favourite fantasy setting, it can be a catch all (eg high antasy, cyberpunk etc) or specific (eg Final Fantasy VII, Bas Lag, Chinese mythology etc) and if you can't decide, just put as many as you want.
Useful Wiki article

For me it has to be either Bas Lag or the setting of Breath of Fire 4 (which I have just started playing again, got a PC copy w00t, depite it being 8 years old), which both fall into a kind of steampunky theme but in a non-Victorian  setting. I do like The Elder Scrolls, especially their breaking of the usual high/hero fantasy race list (humans of various shapes sizes and ear pointedness + orcs) by throwing in the beast races (though admittedly they have been very humanised in TES:4. What happened to their funny jointed legs?)

Well enough about mine, post up your preference people

The War Cabinet - ETW Discussion / Intergrated diplomacy
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:00:55 PM »
the diplomacy is apparently going to be more integrated, meaning an AI won't declare a ceasefire then immediately break it, this came up in the Boozer so I guess we should start the topic

Discussion and Debate - The Philosopher's Plaza / Creationism

Here (link) is a link to a letter by the incredible (IMHO) Richard Dawkins talking about the recent row in the Royal Society over the remarks of their head of education, advising that creationism should be taught in science lessons as a valid point of view

Discuss

the Large Hadron Collider is due to be turned on at CERN on September the 10th despite ridiculous amounts of media coverage claiming it will end the world

What do you think?

The War Cabinet - ETW Discussion / naval warfare
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:01:19 AM »
this is probably the one thing that I am most exited about, the current naval "battles" (auto resolve) have been the only thing I have not liked about the Total Wars (except shogun which had no ships) because they often end in me getting my ass handed to me even though I should of had the advantage, and my only major source of battle loss on the summary sheet.

What do you guys think of them?

The War Cabinet - ETW Discussion / defending all your assets
« on: September 01, 2008, 10:40:01 AM »
right we have the place to discuss Empire so I will

in empire one of the big changes will be that settlement add-ons will all show up on the map and that opposing armies can block them off, starving a settlement.

I'm not to sure about this cause it seems like the total war series is getting more and more towards tedious micromanagement, which is not fun and is what eventually put me off the age of empires/empire earth games. I have always thought of Shogun as probably the best in the series because it has a much simpler play style that can still be challenging.

anyone else have opinions?
