High Medieval Georgia - Bibliography & Sources List
« on: June 02, 2018, 11:39:52 PM »
A hopefully useful guide which I'm going to build up over time - more will be added soon.

This bibliography is intended to cover what I define as Georgia's central, or high, medieval period - the eleventh to early thirteenth centuries - though this definition is broad, and for example papers whose primary focus is an earlier period but which may be useful to cover the historiography, or papers about a later period which include good summaries of elements of this period in their background details, may also be included. Its current focus is primarily towards secular literature and secondary historical material, especially that published in English, though this may develop if more people are able to contribute to it.

The subdivisions by thematic topic are broad and rather arbitrary, and may shift over time (religious or at least theological history in particular may well warrant its own subsection). It should be recognised that many of these areas overlap heavily - for example, an improved chronology for the archbishops of Kartli obviously has a religious topic, but it is also of narrative importance and senior clergy were absolutely political figures in this period. Intellectual history is meanwhile so heavily intertwined with religious history that the separation of the two has relatively little meaning. Nonetheless, some sort of division has to be attempted to make a large bibliography of this kind useable, and that is what has been attempted - users should as a result be unsurprised if the text they want is not in the first subsection they consider.
