XMA - Exilian Missile Agency
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:47:18 AM »
So, following from the rocketry thread, I've been working on the scale model of the Jupiter-C. Near as I can tell I'm doing roughly a 1:34 scale.

Here are the main components already constructed; fins, engine mount, nose cone, and main body. I'm pretty happy with the nose cone. It's an unusual piece to say the least. I carved out the bottom of a wooden dowel rod and attached to it a rolled piece of cardboard, which I shaped by hand since I don't know the math (or have proper measuring tools). :P I made the motor mount to fit the third size motor, one just above the levels I usually mess with, but since this is a bit larger and heavier it might need the extra thrust. I can always make an adapter for smaller motors.

Here it is fitted together, fins not attached yet the one just sitting there for example. Just need to attach those and come up with something for the little Explorer 1 satellite that goes on the very top.

Then it's on to paint and decals...

Got the thing put together. Used the handle from an old paintbrush for the Explorer 1 satellite and some more dowel rod. Added extra detail like the bolt heads on the 3rd stage, steering nozzles, and antennas.

Engine mount installed, fins attached. The nose cone is still removable but attached by a bungee cord.

Gonna look pretty sharp once I get some decorations on it. :)

Well here you go. Scratch-built 1:34 as-true-to-scale-as-I-could-be-bothered-to-do Redstone #29 aka Jupiter-C aka Juno 1 with Explorer 1 satellite.

It's coming, PG.

Coincidentally I've decided to go ahead and make the next step; the Mercury Redstone variant used to send the first Americans, and chimp, to space. Same booster rocket, different payload.

I'd be more apathetic if I weren't so lethargic.

Finally getting something going on this Mercury Redstone!

Here it is ready for some primer paint.

Just need rocket nozzles on the escape tower then I'll be done with the components and move on to paint and decals.

Another craft rolls off the assembly line! Scratch-built 1:34 as-true-to-scale-as-I-could-be-bothered-to-do-again Mercury Redstone #7 which carried astronaut Alan Shepard into the fringes of space.

And here are the Redstone boys.

I've got larger engines ordered so stay tuned for a flight some day. :)
