It's the escape tower. Essentially a mini rocket that pulls the capsule away from the booster in the event of a malfunction/abort. I made it out of kebab sticks, toothpicks, and a paint brush handle. :)

Two launch failures occurred today. The Jupiter C didn't have sufficient nose weight which threw its balance out of whack but I'm really bummed out because the MR sailed off-course directly into the forest where it was lost. :( Maybe some day I'll learn to launch the damn things from the middle of the field.


I make my dad do all the launching so I can film. :P

They looked good at least in the first split second. Goodbye MR. :'(


Also changed this to the E Missile Agency for obvious reasons.

The real Jupiter C was a success but at least my MR performed better than the launch of the original:
At least they didn't lose it in the woods though. :'(

Well the corn (CORN!) was too high for a field launch so I aimed the rockets heavily into the field instead.

The Jupiter C had an excellent launch this time. The center of gravity and pressure were perfectly balanced due to the extra weight I added to the nose. Unfortunately the parachute got twisted in its own lines and the craft crashed on reentry into the mass of corn and dirt. Half of two fins were broken off but it can be repaired.

The new Mercury Redstone performed absolutely stunningly. Perfect launch, perfect recovery deployment, perfect reentry. Like a boss. ;)
They're hard to see on a small screen in the sky but you can see the MR coming in on parachute in the last couple seconds on big screen.
