Announcements! The Town Crier! / ExiliCon - The Aftermath
« on: July 29, 2014, 11:18:14 AM »

The first ever Exilian convention happened on Saturday in Cambridge, UK! Thanks to everyone who came - it was a really fun day all round and we're very glad to have organised it. We'll be getting feedback over the next few days and weeks to look at what we can improve for future conventions. It's an exciting new departure for us and we were overwhelmed by the positivity and enthusiasm we found.

On a personal note, it was also great meeting some old friends who I'd never seen in realspace before (Comrade_General wins the dedication award for coming over from Ohio) and also making new friends among the convention-goers. Hopefully I managed not to send too many people to sleep with storytelling...

If you want to see more convention photos, head to our facebook or look at the thread here.

Looking forward to many more events in future!

Thanks, all,

Jubal (Megadux)

Announcements! The Town Crier! / Hetairos Rulebook Released!
« on: July 17, 2014, 05:57:43 PM »
HETAIROS

The Hetairos rulebook has been released as a freely downloadable PDF! Hetairos is a tabletop RPG-boardgame set in the Greek underworld, for 4-6 players. Each player controls a hero - one of a range of character archetypes, with varied special abilities - and then sets out to achieve a scenario-dependent goal by exploring a randomly generated tile-based map. Hades is a land of mysterious shrines, deadly traps, isolated villages, and dread monsters - all this and more can be discovered as you travel the tunnel systems. Scenarios range from simply who can survive longest to group tasks such as building the great automaton Talos and protecting an NPC from the wrath of the terrifying Furies.

The rules are downloadable, and the game can be played with no specialist equipment - we'd really like to encourage playtesting and feedback, so head over to the forum and start your journey into the dark depths of Greek myth and legend!

Discussion and Debate - The Philosopher's Plaza / Euthanasia
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:27:11 PM »
So a new debate has sprung up in the UK over assisted dying and people having the right to end their own life. Famous proponents include Terry Pratchett and Stephen Hawking, and more recently former Archbishop Lord Carey. Opposition is mostly from faith groups though by no means entirely, with some worried that people will feel pressured to die to not be a burden to family or society.

On Hawking's recent contribution to the debate:

Hetairos / Models and Game Pieces

Hetairos: Model Ideas

This will be some advice on models and game pieces that you can buy for Hetairos.

Disclaimer: I do not have any links with the companies below, I can bear no responsibility for your purchases, nor do I in any way profit from them. These are just recommendations based on where I've found suitable gaming pieces for my own use. There's also no need to buy models, the whole testing run of games was done with a mini chess set plus a draughts set. I've recommended only 1/72 minis for the purpose as they're small enough to fit on a relatively not-too-vast map.

By Manufacturer

Eagle Games
This is the start point, as their Age of Mythology boardgame pieces can be ordered separately and
GREEK
http://www.eaglegames.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EGL700_08
The most important sprue - consider getting two. Contains 5 hoplites (NPC or PC hoplites), 5 greek archers (which could make decent Amazons), some spear-armed heroes which could be PC hoplites or myrmidons, a swordsman hero (myrmidon again?), heracles (cimmerian perhaps), 3 cyclopes, 3 gorgons, 3 hydras, 3 manticores, 3 minotaurs, 2 centaurs. There are 10 villager models which could be used as some sort of NPC or minion, and 5 horsemen which probably are the only non-useful bits of the lot.

EGYPT
http://www.eaglegames.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EGL700_07
Another good selection.

NORSE
http://www.eaglegames.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EGL700_09
This is the least useful of the three sprues, but the dragons and giants can still certainly be useful.

By Type

Heroes

Allies & Other

Small Monsters

Great Monsters

Cerberus
No idea, if you can find suitable 1:72 model please let me know!
Cockatrice
No idea, if you can find suitable 1:72 model please let me know!
Chimera
No idea, if you can find suitable 1:72 model please let me know!
Dragon
The Eagle Games Norse set has dragons, and the Egyptian set has Phoenixes which, given they look nothing like birds at all, can also stand in here.
Giant
An easy one - the Eagle Games Norse giants and trolls would be good here, or spare cyclopes from the Greek set.
Gorgon
There are some of these in the Eagle Games Norse set.
Lycan
No idea, if you can find suitable 1:72 model please let me know!
Manticore
Some of these are in the Eagle Games Greek set.
Minotaur
Some of these are in the Eagle Games Greek set.
Nemean Lion
No idea, if you can find suitable 1:72 model please let me know!
Sphinx
Some of these are in the Eagle Games Egyptian set.

Hetairos / Playing Hetairos: The Practical Guide
« on: July 16, 2014, 07:00:12 PM »
This will be for some hints and tips that aren't in the rulebook/are in the appendices, specifically on physically setting up the game.

THE BOARD
  • I usually use graph paper, stuck together by laying it down carefully on top of sellotape
  • Staples work a lot less well as the paper will crumple when you try to draw on it. Glue is possible but you lose some paper due to overlap and if the glue is at all lumpy you have a drawing/keeping models upright issue
  • Remember that the tape shouldn't be on the playing side, as you're going to want to draw over it!

PLAYING PIECES
  • There is no need to buy specialist playing pieces, though there's a guide here if you want to make your games all pretty. The entire testing run was done with a mini chess set and a mini draughts set.
  • If your playing pieces are bigger, your board squares need to be bigger to compensate. 28mm is probably too big in most cases.

DICE AND STUFF
  • Don't roll across the board. It never ends well.
  • Always remember that internet dice rollers exist, you don't need to buy extra dice if you have a web connection!

Guns, Swords, and Steam / Sport in Sarpedonia
« on: July 15, 2014, 10:56:11 PM »
Sport in Sarpedonia

In honour of various recent sporting events, I present to you a brief alphabetical guide to the sports of Sarpedonia. Rules clarifications and other questions may be asked below!

Archery

Archery is dying out as a sport in most areas, as the musket replaces the bow as a major weapon of war. It is still practised in parts of Sarastia and Tarrala, and is often ritually associated with the worship of Artemis.

Duelling

Both as a way of settling disputes and as an entertainment form, duelling has been rapidly gaining in popularity. Whilst often banned due to its high risk of fatalities, famous duellists nevertheless operate in the fighting pits of shady taverns and – in countries where it is legal – in market squares in full view.

Hurvelt

A horseback sport played on the great plains and into parts of western Surany. A set of rings on poles are set up; the aim is for a player to catch as many rings on the end of their lance or spear as possible. Teams are of two, however, and players may not take consecutive rings.

Jousting

Once popular amongst the gentry, jousting is now done only rarely, but a few still practise and it is done as a courtly entertainment in Aloen and Durginfeldt.

Pommen

A team sport most popular in Durginfeldt, parts of Wurttembuch, Aloen, and much of the Union. Somewhat similar to lacrosse, played with long poles that have a net or bag at the end to catch a small wooden ball in. The teams are of eight players (usually played with one defending a goal-basket on a pole at each end of the large pitch, four defenders, and three attackers). The poles occasionally have padding after the bag, as they are often used to put the enemy off/keep them away from the ball as much as to hold or throw it!

Pommen is declining in popularity, after a heyday about a century ago – local teams are now less common, but groups of travelling players often include teams who will play for entertainment.

Redball

A sport usually played in the far south of Sarpedonia, particularly in Mirawanda and the Green Coast where the small townships and city-states all have teams (and sometimes several teams). Teams are of five players, stripped to the waist. The ball must be placed on the central platform of the court, (which is confined (perhaps 10mx10m) and often in a pit), and it must stay there for a time period (about 30 seconds) to score. The sport is full contact – there are basic rules to avoid killings such as bans on biting, gouging, striking the throat, or attempting to break the neck or spine, and beyond that almost anything is fair game.

Redball is wildly popular, a lot of money runs on it, and indeed the teams are often locked into municipal politics; it is a central part of the beating hearts of the southern cities.

Shooting

Competitive shooting with guns is a relatively new contest sport, but is rapidly gaining popularity. Shooting competitions are common in parts Chaltary and the more urban and centralised regions of the Union, where either the culture is very geared towards warfare or guns are cheap or some of the gentry particularly like shooting.

Tabletop Games - The Game Room / Welcome to The Game Room!
« on: July 15, 2014, 05:47:10 PM »
Welcome to this part of the site! The Game Room is Exilian's area for tabletop gaming.

This basically includes any game that can be played on a tabletop. Boardgames, pen and paper RPGs, wargames, etc are all included. The Game Room includes discussion of released and established games, with plenty of subforums for games and the worlds around them. You can also discuss miniatures for gaming and other kit-related stuff here, recommend games, and more.

If you are designing a game or want to know about games we have in development, please take a look at the Senet House, our tabletop development area, here. For the creative side of tabletop gaming - miniature sculpting or painting, scenery construction, and so on - you may want to look at The Artisan's Gallery.

The Rules
The usual site rules apply here, and penalties may be given for spamming, flaming, hate speech, or illegal activities. All of our moderation decisions are made on a case by case basis, taking into account the context in which things were posted, and most can be appealed via the site's tribunal. Staff can be identified by their coloured names, with a full list available here.

The full Terms of Service can be found here.

Thanks, and have fun gaming!

You combine a further set of guns to make another SOME GUNS, then add the two of these together to make MORE GUNS. You then pick up the guns you originally came in here for, combining them to make another SOME GUNS. You now have a MORE GUNS, a SOME GUNS, and three free inventory slots.
